19 5 ALMA MATER Parkesburg High forever. Firm she'll always stand. Ever true and faithful, Helping us to face the world so fearlessly. And through the years that follow. We'll pledge allegiance true To Parkesburg High, rah, Parkesburg High, To the old White and Blue ! As we come to the end of our high school days and set out in life to build successful careers, we as graduates, stop to realize and appreciate all that our teachers have done for us. We are grate- ful to them not only for the presenta-tion of know- ledge, but also for their many kindnesses to us and for the leadership shown by them. We, the class of 1954, take this opportunity to express our feeling of gratitude to Mr. Matthew J. Minch, Jr. for his helpful and sincere guidance during our high school life. To the Class of 1954 Congratulations upon reaching a long-sought goal. The sum of all your labors here has been entered on the records of our school. But far more important than what you have done is what you have become through the doing. To the de- gree that you have done your appointed tasks faithfully and well, have practiced day by day the high principles of truth, courage, loyalty, and helpfulness, to that degree you have approached the ideals of character that make for worthy citizenship. I wish for each of you a life of happy and useful service to your fellowmen, believing that your work in Parkesburg School has, in some measure, prepared you for it. My best wishes to you wherever your paths may lead. BOARD OF EDUCATION Harry O. Stoner President Robert E. Barron Vice President Charles Krumrine Secretary Chester E. Treasurer Miller J ohn Y. BASKETBALL DIARY Led by league scoring champion Sonny Skiles, Parkesburg started to rebuild its '53-'54 squad. Fred Thompson was the only other veteran while Rod Gilmore, Bob Canan, Rich Barron, Jack Ross and Bob McComsey moved up from the J. V. squad. Bud Morgan was the only newcomer. December 11. The Parke sburg High quintet made a futile trip to Downingtown as they lost to the Whippets 59-38 in the season opener. The Minch- men couldn't get into the ball game as they trail- ed 50-13 at the end of the third quarter. But in the final period, sparked by great shooting from Skiles, who got 23 points for the night, PHS pull- ed up somewhat to better the score. December 18. Parkesburg entertained the Whip- pets from Downingtown, but once again to no a- vail. The Whippets forged ahead after a slow start and never relinquished their lead as they won out 51-38. Skiles took scoring honors with 19 points, followed by Gilmore who added 8. SONNY SKILES FRED THOMPSON December 26. Looking for their first win, the PHS cagers fought a tough game against the Alumni, who kept a constant lead, winning 61-44. January 5. Parkesburg journeyedto Avon-Grove. After a pretty close half Avon-Grove began to find the range and outscored the Blue and White in the second half to win the game 64-44. Sonny Skiles had 28 counters for Parkesburg. January 8. Parkesburg High School played host to Oxford High. It was a close battle up to the final whistle. At the end of the first half the score was 23-22 in favor of Oxford. In the last half Oxford outscored us again and went onto win 46-42. Skiles had 19 points for PHS. January 15. Parkesburg journeyed to Kennett Square to play the Blue Demons. Kennett play- ed a very good first half in which they led by 20- 12. In the third period Kennett kept up the fast pace, but in the last period Skiles found the range and scored 17 points to help Parkesburg tie the score. In the overtime both teams scored on even terms. Then came the sudden death . Bob Ferranto of Kennett then made a one hand push shot that won the game. Skiles scored 36 points, just one short of the league record. January 22. Led by the Geesey brothers, the Gold and Black of Unionville toppled the PHS squad 93-45. Unionville led all the way, in- creasing their lead each quarter. Because of the height factor, the visitors controlled the boards and this fact alone was very important to the out- come. Again top scorer was Sonny Skiles with 14, Rich Barron adding 9, and Thompson 8. January 26. Parkesburg lost its fifth straight game in loop competitionto visiting Avon-Grove by a 76-54 margin. The game was close at the end of the first half with Avon-Grove leading 32- 25. Once again Skiles was high for Parke sburg as he tallied 20 points. RODNEY GILMORE RICHARD BARRON January 29. Parke sburg journeyed to Oxford to be the first ones to play Oxford on its new floor. Parke sburg took a first quarter lead and held it till the end of the first half, the score being 33- 32. Parke sburg kept the lead in the second half and went on to win by a score of 51-47. This was P-burg's first win in six league games. Skiles and Thompson had 17 and 15 points respectively. February 5. Parke sburg played host to the Blue Demons of Kennett. After a close first quarter Kennett took a 31 to 14 halftime lead and coasted the rest of the game. Fred Thompson took scor- ing honors for Parke sburg with 20 points. February 9. Traveling to their second meeting with the Indians of Unionville the Blue and White rallied in the second quarter after a slow start but trailed at the half 39-28. The second half was nip and tuck all the way, but the Indians held their lead and won 72-52. Scoring laurels went to Skiles as he connected for 24 counters. February 12. Parkesburg journeyed to Avon- Grove and lost by a 67-40 decision. After a slow first half for the Blue and White, Avon- Grove had jumped off to a 37-12 lead. The mar- gin was 53-22 at the third period mark, but Parke sburg came back in the fourth canto to out- score Avon-Grove 18-14. Rodney Gilmore was high scorer for Parkesburg with 11 markers. February 16. Parkesburg played host to Oxford. It was a close game all the way thru. At the end of the first quarter the score was 8-7 in fav- or of Parkesburg. In the second quarter Oxford pulled ahead and led at halftime 24-21. Going in- to the last half Parkesburg started hitting and was ahead in the last quarter 53-49. But a cou- ple of foul shots and another field goal by Oxford tied the game at 55-55. With less than a minute to play Oxford scored and stayed ahead as the time ran out. High scorer forP-burg wasSkiles with 24, followed by Canan and Thompson, with 11 and 10 points respectively. February 23. Parkesburg traveled to Kennett hoping they would get their second league victory but the Blue and White's shooting was off the first half and they came out on the short end of a 32- lb count. In the second half they found the range but just couldn't catch up as Kennett kept on hit- ting. The final score was 70-52. Skiles was leading scorer for the Blue and White as he came through with 27 points. Thompson added 13. February 26. Unionville came to Parkesburg seeking its twelfth straight victory in the South- ern Chester County League. The Blue and White jumped off to a 12-11 first quarter lead but drop- ped behind 33-29 at the half. Unionville never lost the lead after that, winning 67-50. Sonny Skiles led Parkesburg scoring with 17 counters while Rod Gilmore added 13. Highlights of the season occurred when Sonny Skiles scored 36 points against Kennett Square to bread the previously set Parkesburg High scoring record of 32 points. Also Rod Gilmore won the southern Chester County League's foul- shooting contest making it three straight years that Parkesburg has won the individual and team foul-shooting crowns. The entire squad reported outdoors on March 23. Coach Garnett considered his prospects excellent for the season and looked toward the 1954 season with brighter hopes yet. Battery men Skiles, Thompson and Gilmore return with key infielders and outfielders, Canan, Foreman, Barron and McComsey. April 15. Parkesburg High played host to Oxford and after a tight pitching duel which went into two extra innings Oxford pulled the game out of the fire to win 3-0. April 23. The Blue and White traveled to Kennett Square and once again the game went into extra innings. Then in the eleventh inning the Blue Demons scored on a P. H. S. error and won out 1-0. Parkesburg's hitting showed up very poorly as Bob Smith of Kennett posted 23 strikeouts. April 28. Avon-Grove entertained Parkesburg and it turned out to be a very pleasing day for the hosts as Parkesburg fell victims to Avon-Grove 8-3. The main feature of this game was a fourth inning home run by Joe Lewis. May 1. Parkesburg broke its losing streak as they posted their first win 7-1 against Unionville. In the third inning after a single by Kerns, a walk to Halter and successive singles by Foreman and Canan, Sam Smith hit a triple deep to the right field corner, scoring three runs and making a total of four runs for that inning. In the last inning P-burg pushed across three more runs and thus went on to win. Skiles posted 12 strikeouts. May 8. Parkesburg played host to Avon-Grove but the game was rained out after two innings with the visitors leading 2-0. May 12. Kennett Square journeyed to P. I. CO. field to hand Parkesburg an- other loss 5-2. Kennett held an early 4-0 lead and it wasn't until the sixth inning that Parkesburg came to life scoring two runs on a walk, a single and a double. Then again Kennett Square scored in the seventh inning to round off the scoring of the game. May 16. Parkesburg traveled to Oxford where they received their worst beat- ing of the season. Once again the lack of hitting proved to be the downfall of the Blue and White team as Paul Poole posted 14 strikeouts. Final score: Oxford 14, Parkesburg 3. May 20. Avon-Grove returned to Parkesburg to play their previously rained out game. Parkesburg took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, added four more counters in the fourth inning and finally six big runs in the fifth inning to trounce A-G 11-0. Important factors in this game were the hitting powers of Foreman, Minch, Skiles, Thompson, Gilmore, Barron and McComsey. The second game with Unionville was cancelled finishing the season with a two wins, five losses record for the P-burg nine. 1954 BASEBALL RECORD April 13 April 23 April 27 April 30 May 4 P O Avon-Grove At Oxford Unionville Kennett _______ Oxford May 11 At Avon-Grove May 17 At Unionville May 21 At Kennett Back Row: Barron, Morris, McGinnis, Gilmore, Harnish, Thompson, Skiles, Landis.
