Q At the end of the six weeks period they are given a written and vision test by a member of the Iowa Highway Patrol. If they pass this test they receive a driver's training permit to learn to drive in the company of a qualified Driver's Training Instructor. Before taking the wheel, each student is instructed in the basic mechanics of the automobile. The actual be- hind-the-wheel instruction takes place in a dual controlled car provided by a local dealer. A minimum of twenty hours in the car is required for each student, of which an average of eight hours per student are behind the wheel. During this time an attempt is made to channel their attitudes along the right course and to teach the basic skills necessary for them to steer, not aim, the car down the highway.
