HIGH SCHOOL ASSEMBLY Ku J Senior Class History In the fall of 1942, Z3 youngsters entered first grade with Miss Kruger as their teacher. They were Alda Vae Abbas, Richard Berends, Kenneth Brocka, LaVerne Brown. Gary Buss, Dixie Dring, Marvin Eile rs, Lauris Frerichs, Leroy Froning, Russell Huisman, Jared Kennedy, Curtis Kyhl, Henrietta Luppen, LaVerda Miller, Eldon Peters, Henry Reine rs, Eva Kay Rutledge, Vernon Simon, Martha Sweeter, Nancy Tedman, Leroy Truax, and 'Ronald Truax. ' Many of these students moved or dropped by the time we started Junior High. New students were Marvol Alberts, Alvina Brocka, Rena Bean. Laverne Cuvelier, Larry Fleshner, Richard Froning, Herman Hemmen, Vernon Janssen, Donald Kuisian, Gaylen Kuperus, Terry Reagan, John Spain, Dorane Abkes, Jo Ann Allspach, Doris Ka1kwarf,Lori Porter, Harm Smith, Amanda Spe iker, Jim Schultz, .ByrLn'akWicke rs, and Bill snmjer. A Our class has enjoyed working together on many projects, A few of them were magazine sales, picking up corn, which earned us a radio, and taking a trip to Des Moines, to visit the state capital. When we were Frehmen, more new students joined us. .They were Marian Beitelmann, Kenneth Brocka, Marlene Brocka, Donita Doescher, Pauline Henricks, Shirley Wessels, Margie Menken, Donald Bergmai, Harvey Diekrnan, Harlan Oelmann, Donald Peters, Henry Reiners, Harlan Spree, Larry Wilkens, and Larry Oldenburger. One of our highlights of our Freshman year was our initiation party. We also participated in another magazine sale. In our Junior year, one of our most exciting highlights was presenting the Junior-Senior banquet and prom, Our theme was Paris , The Vance Dixon band played for our prom. We made a great deal of money by selling concessions at basketball games and bake sales, which we held downtown. This year, one of the things we will remember is the basketball county tourna- ment and sectional tournament which we won. Four of the first five were from our class. They were Curtis Kyhl, Vernon Janssen, Gary Buss, and Bill Snittjer. At the home-coming game, Gary Buss was crowned king. Two of his attendants were Curtis Kyhl and Bill Snittjer. Donita Doe scher was one of the queen's attendants. She was also our queen candidate in'.our Freshman and Sophomore years. Lori Porter was our candidate in our Junior year. Another thing which we will remember about our Senior year is the preparation of this annual. Even though it was hard, we enjoyed every minute of it. This ends our high school days, which I am sure we can say we have enjoyed very much. Yes, it was 10 years ago today when I graduated. Let's drive around the vicinity and see what some of my classmates are doing: As we drive into Allison Iowa, we see Mrs, Doug Miller, the former Dixie Dring, walking into the grocery store with her three children. She informs me that they live on a farm southwest of Allison. Driving further north, we stop at Greene, where we meet Marvin Eilers, who began his football coaching career there this year. We learn that so far they have had no wins. Driving back into Parkersburg, I recognize several of the farmers working in the field. Mr. Spree, and his wife, the former Janice Pruisner, are busy chasing their hogs out of their corn field. Across the road lives Mr. Wilkens. Yes, he's still a bachelor, quite busy looking for a wife. In Parkersburg, I decided to stop in the drug store for a coke, and who should wait on me ? None other, than Mrs. Bill Snittjer, the former Donita Doescher. She tells me that they have bought the store and are getting along quite nicely. Walking further down the street, Isee Dorane Abkes decorating a window in her father's clothing store, which has become quite large. Parkersburg Produce is now owned by Gaylen Kuperus, who is quite a chicken raiser. His last experiment was crossing a chicken, and a duck. The result was bigger and better eggs. l Hey, there, take it easy! A car just passed me, and in it was Shirley Wessels, who just got a job working with Jimmy Lynch. Looking into the newspaper, I see that one of our women came into politics. Pauline Henrichs is doing a fine job as governor of the Alcatraz Islands. Last week, her husband-to-be, Ralph Murray, a photographer for many of our best quality movies, joined her. One very popular young man in this town at present is Henry Reiners. He has invented a kind of fluid to put in cars which is made of water and other liquids. It is run mostly in hot rods. Oh, oh, there's a copl Kenneth Brockal I wonder how he got that position. Maybe it was through a former cop's daughter, Eldon Peters, who was basketball and baseball manager is now known for his famous speeches which he is giving to the teams in all the schools of the country. Marlene Brocka, and her partner, Byrna Wickers, are keeping busy by selling men's clothing in an exclusive clothing store in Alaska. Harlan Oelman, working with a refrigerator company, is also stationed there with the sole purpose of selling deep-freezers and refrigerators. His bonuses are spent on these two fine young ladies. Don Bergman, who recently took as his wife, Marlys Menken, is happily living on a large turkey farm north of Parkersburg. His landlord, Curtis Kyhl, lives with them. Marvol Alberts, the famous girl-Chaser has been having troubles. He just can't decide which girl he is in love with. ' Jo Ann Allspach, who is now a home economics teacher, has accepted a position in Shell Rock, where she will live on a farm with her husband. How about some white rats to take home to your children as pets ? Just go to the Buss Pet Shop in Parkersburg, and Gary Buss will furnish you with everything you need: - It seems as if we also have some actors in the class, as I notice on the movie billboard. Harvey Diekman and Larry Oldenburger are replacing the famous Abbott and Costello. ' Last week it was announced that the Schlitz Sity Slickers dance band is to appear in Parkersburg. Jim Schultz is the .chief drummer. Marian Beitelmann, our former famous boy chaser has just completed an invention. It is a ball and chain weapon which is rapidly becoming popular with the girls in high school who are out to gogetum. Vernon Janssen has finally decided that operating a small grocery store isn't so bad after all. Helping him is some cute little chic from a town near by. John Spain, our town garbage collector for the past 10 years, has given up the job to anotherrone of his old classmates, Lauris Frerichs. John is now .busily 'going' about hauling coal. t 1 'A 2 W. Our students observed many operations of parliamentary procedure and ways to make money for the club.. Our Council consists of aboy and girl from each class, and one representative from each chartered organization. The organization's sponsors are Mr. Reher and Mr Luuge, The purpose of the Student Council is to provide a means of creating better fellowship and understanding between faculty and students and among students themselves, and to give a greater opportunity, for self-government and experiences in democratic practices. Some of the activities which our Council sponsored this year have been: home-coming activities, a cookie sale, and all high school parties. In the second semester Donita Doescher, Dorane Abkes, and Gary Buss were replaced on the Council with Gaylen Kuperus, Janice Jansen, and Pauline Henrichs. Future Farmers of America There are thirty members in the local Future Farmer Chapter, the Beaver Valley Chapter. The activities of the group are varied, and we have participated in many contests this year around the state. The boys exhibited their livestock projects at the county and state fairs, taking many awards. A judging team representing the Chapter competed at the Yorkshire type conference at Cedar Rapids taking honors there. The team judged swine at the National Barrow show in Austin, Minnesota. It took fourth place at the Duroc type conference at Calara farms in September with Jim Schultz the high individual of the entire contest receiving a nice trophy. The Chapter attended the National Convention in Kansas City, Missouri, in October, The boys will climax the year by exhibiting their swine projects at the Iowa State Spring Barrow show in Cedar Rapids and by attending the state convention at Council Bluffs. It is organized and operated according to the standards set forth by the Federal School Lunch Program to provide adequate noon lunches for our students. Approximately 125 persons enjoy lunches each noon which are prepared by Mrs. Sam Buss and Mrs. Tillie Nicklaus. Serving, dishes, tickets, and general dining room duties are cared for by Mrs. Anna Fleshner with the help of several high school students. The original equipment debt has been retired and the program is now debt free. Since the project is operated on a nonprofit basis, it has been possible to serve excellent meals at very reasonalbe prices. An added feature of the lunch program this year has been participation in the Federal Surplus Milk Project which has aided our program and greatly increased milk consumpticn by our students. The service of the library in high school reaches into all departments of the curriculum and to all students. The operational success depends upon Co-operation between students using the library and the staff of student librarians. It is essential that the location of books be known at all times in order that they may be readily available for students who desire to use them. A Check-out and a check-in sheet is kept by the student librarians during each period of the day. I tender my thanks to the excellent staff, and to Shirley Wessels, who has done the typing this year .... Mrs. Evans, Mary Lou checks out Mrs Evans a book for Lynnette. From the students of Junior High who volunteered for Safety Patrol this year,twenty-nine qualified by passing the AAA Patrol test with high scores, These patrol members covered two posts eighteen times daily, six of these posts were fifteen minutes long. In addition a bus patrol operated to insure the safety of our rural students. The patrol functioned efficiently under the leadership of our captain fDick Snittjerj and a co-captain fNa.ncy Wahlj. The object of our Parkersburg Safety Patrol is not only to instruct, direct, and protect our students while crossing streets adjoining the school, but to help them to think in terms of safety when ever they are in such situations. The patrol not only did a fine job this year, but all feel that this experience helped them to learn to shoulder responsibility and in turn become better citizens. The high school band, under the direction of Gordon Cosner, began the school year with an evening marching demonstration downtown in October which was well received by the public. In November several members of the band put on a musical program on television from KWWL, Waterloo. The first concert appearance by the band was at Parent's Night when we did several numbers. For the basketball games, the pep band provided music between games, Of course, December brought on the annual Christmas program in which the band played many fine num- bers. Then they settled down to some hard work in preparation for the State Music Contest to be held in May. With spring we have the spring concert and a marching demonstration. The band also takes a trip each spring. Last year we attended the Drake Relays at Des Moines where we marched and took part in the massed band. This is not the end--the band will also take part in the Memorial Day exercises, and will play Wednesday evening Concerts downtown during the summer, In trumental oloists CAROI-E REHER MARILYN HOBBS Clarinet Clarinet HARLAN OELMAN ARDITH BROCKA JANICE JANSEN Baritone CLARINET QUARTET CAROLE REHER MARILYN HOBB5 CHARLES SNITTJER Bass Horn MARY ANN BERGMAN Saxophone BATON TWIRLERS Donita Doescher Dixie Dring Judy Peppler MAJORETTE Janice Jansen JANICE DONITA DIXIE JUDY Girls' Glee Club FRONT ROW: Marilyn Hobbs, Marlene Brocka, Delores Burch, Donita Doescher, Dixie Dring, Carla Hosch, Betty Brocka. The little Panthers worked hard and learned fast, closing the 54-55vseason with a Z1 point win over Clarksville. The season was far more profitable than the score book shows. Invaluable experience was gained by the 7th and 8th grade squad members and all indications for a bigger and better basketball season next year.
