The school seemed like a maze filled with new faces that soon became familiar ones. Then another year passed by and we looked back on our sophomore days with humor and confidence. We had other things to think about: class rings, Color Day, and most of all the anticipation of graduation. Now as seniors these events have arrived, and we are again filled with fears, excitement, and bewilderment of what lies ahead. These days we have experienced are gone and will never pass by us again but each of us has a memory of these times we shared at PHS. f Mm ,f Leading the '75 class are from left, seated, Susie Bailey, secretary, Debbie Haught, treasurer, standing, Joseph Dotson, vice presidentg and David Poling, president. Many oohs and ahs were heard on the first day of school. Although confused at first, the sophomores soon conquered the layout of the school. Their pride was evident. Making new friends was not as difficult as many might have expected. lt was a wonderful feeling to be able to say they were going to PHS. In the season opener, the Red and White downed Wheeling, 24-6, with Buster Donaway, Romel Hender- son, and Mike Shields providing the scoring punch. The Big Reds first made known their explosive offense and iron-clad defense defeating St. Albans, 48- 0. Joe Dotson and senior quarterback Rich Duggan teamed for the touchdown passes and Deric Davis led the running attack, while Dave Winans' ironmen held the Dragons scoreless. Scoring 35 points in the second half, the Indians romped to their third victory over Huntington East, 43- 0. The rushing game amassed 336 yards to just 59 total yards for the Highlanders. The Big Reds took what appeared to be a com- manding 24-6 lead over the Monarchs of John Marshall, then were forced to hold off a fierce fourth quarter tally to salvage a 24-18 win. Donaway, Duggan, and Pat Earley, plus three successful two-point conver- sions after the TDs led the Big Red scoring. The first battle of the unbeatens the Big gridders faced was with the Marietta Tigers. The James Gang came out on top, 16-0. Duggan handled the offensive aspect of the game with two touchdowns, while the defensive unit held the Tigers powerless. In the Big Reds' sixth triumph of the season they completely shutout the Pony Express of Huntington High, 36-O. Tallies by Donaway, Dotson, Duggan, Earley, and Terry Goudy lit up the scoreboard at Stadium Field. Davis and Goudy each rambled for two Stephens, Nathan Rake, Kenny Deem, Mike Cunningham, Dave Ken- ny, Mark Furr, Joe Winans, Greg Latham, John Brookover, Bernie Dearth, Pat Earley, Dwight Medley: fourth row, manager William Wright, trainer Scott Cunningham, manager Donald Wright, Dave Viar, George Elliott, Dave Phillips, Randy Cutlip, Dave Manzo, Coach Jim Stalnaker, Coach Larry Rhodes, Coach Marshall Burdette, Head Coach Buddy James. -2, make trip to playoffs touchdowns to pace the Tribe to a 50-0 pounding of the Charleston Mountain Lions. The James Gang then faced their second battle of the unbeatens carrying a 7-0 record into the contest against the Stonewall Jackson Generals and walked away on the short end of a 32-0 decision. Bound and determined to win the rest of their regular season games and earn a playoff berth, the Big Red Machine encountered the Black Knights of Point Pleasant. Scoring four of the first five times they had possession of the ball, the Big Reds racked up 30 first- half points and held on for a 36-7 victory. In an absolute must game with Parkersburg South, the mighty Big Reds came out on top, 16-6, to retain their dominance in the Battle of Parkersburg. Two key 25-yard TD passes by Duggan, one to Dotson and one to Donaway, proved to be the difference in the game. Duggan's ground game and the PHS defense led by Winans controlled the rest of the game. The Big Reds, 9-1 in regular season play with a 14.0 fourth place rating and a playoff berth under their belts, tackled the top-ranked Buckhannon-Upshur at their home field and stole the show with a 32-0 shellacking of the Buccaneers. Duggan and Shields manuevered the offensive efforts, while the defense followed in suit. In hopes of attaining their first championship since 1958, the Big Reds traveled to Marshall University's Fairfield Stadium to tackle the unbeaten Generals of Stonewall Jackson. Defense was the name of the game, and PHS held their ground, but the Generals' offense commanded the outcome, a 16-O defeat for the indians. Coach James' charges ended the season with a 10-2 mark, an overall superior year. , +1 QW, 'Q W na, 1 , 1. 4?f,y,w.gi ' ,, H W, 4 f L , a A 9 I X ' 'x N f' ' er x W fam ,P ' -. ,. ,1 5, Q ,, .WW .. Little Reds sport 3-3-1 log during '74 season Coach Bob Dutton's Little Red football team sported a 3-3-1 record during the 1974 season. The squad was handicapped immensely by several talented sophomores being moved up to the Big Reds as well as tough competition. Victories came over Marietta, 28-22, John Marshall, 20-13, and Magnolia, 14-8. Losses were suffered from St. Albans, 22-05 Ravenswood, 28-125 South, 12-83 and a scoreless tie with Belpre. Ron Flanagan was the leading passer, while Jim Pence led the rushing attack. Curtis Powell handled the punting, averaging about 25 yards per punt. Coach Gary Prater's squad displayed promise throughout the season, but was inconsistent due to inexperience and in- juries. The Big Red distance men improved greatly as the season progressed with the Indians running their best meets in the St. Albans Invitational and their dual meet with Marietta. In St. Albans the Big Reds finished fifth out of 23 teams and against Marietta they were beaten by only five points, a very good race considering the Tigers were a top Ohio team. Wgtw ,, Cathy' Rymer 263 2641 These times we share remember well What will I remember about this past year? The controversial attendance policy and the times I was tempted to take advantage of it? The uneven flow of heat within the school? The excite- ment of moving into the new music building? A more accomodating patio and smoking area? The rising cost of food? The whole general state of the economy, which caused some speculation of another depression? The con- venience of the finally completed walkways to the Field House? The Big Fteds having gone to the state football championship game? The opportunity for seniors to carry a smaller class load and to leave school early? The Kanawha County textbook controversy, and wondering if Wood County would ex- perience a similar situation? The lack of parking facilities and the poor condi- tion of the student parking lot? The rainy day trips to the Annex and Field House? The feeling of being one of some 2,700 students? And what will the class of 1975 remember? The first day of classes at PHS in September, 1972? The frightening experience of walking into such a huge building? Attending assemblies, thuses, athletic games, and other school gatherings? Eagerly waiting for senior rings to come. Making it through three years of teachers, books, tests, and report cards? All the great conversations, happy times, and smiles that were shared, along with the disappointments, frustrations, and depressing times? Being seniors at last. Color Day activities, donning caps and gowns, the commencement ceremony, the final walk down the corridors of our high school. Saying goodbye. Wondering what will become of the friendships that were made during three years. Remembering these times we shared. WALSWORTH Nlarcrlinz, Slo , L.S A ' A., f v 1 , u K .
