There is no greater feeling than pride in one's own country. Through our years in Mr. Johnston's social classes, we have come to know this pride. For this reason we have chosen to dedicate this annual to Mr. Johnston who has taught us to appre- ciate our education as it prepares us to be- come better citizens of our country. He has made our country and its leaders come alive for us, so we feel closer to them. President Kennedy, as he urges American youth to stay in school, stands as a sym- bol of the greatest democracy in the World. To these two men, President and teacher, we owe a debt of gratitude for leadership and guidance . by jf' DEDICA TION f'H'm not going to lead you by your handg you're here to le OWI1 . 1 arn something on y f ,- af ia Y i ffl , gf i OUI' 3 3 , E 3

Photo by Courtesy of US Army . . . Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country . My urgent message to you is, 'Return to school .' We know that 5 million jobs will open up in this decade for skilled workers, and yet, at the present time, the number of youth being trained for these jobs is totally inadequate. ln light of our national need for a better-prepared work force, it is tragic indeed to be reminded of the estimate that 7 1X2 million boys and girls will fail to complete high school during the decade of the 1960's . . . This situation is tragic, not only because it represents a great loss to our society in unde- veloped talent and potential, but also because the outlook for these young people is black indeed. To you, the young people who have not completed your education--who may have dropped out of school--and to those who are considering doing so--go back to your school desks when your school term begins . . . Go back and become prepared so when your time comes to enter the labor force, you will be a more valuable asset to our Nation. Excerpts from President Kennedy's Message to the Youth of the Nation, Labor Day, September 4, 1962. President Kennedy's Inaugural Address January 20, 1961 INTRODUCTION Photo by Courtesy of US Army
