KANSAS 1 9 6 4 PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS In Memoriam THOMAS B. McCARTY A sad event came Into the lives of PRHS students and teachers with the death of our Custodian and friend Thomas B. McCarty. He served our school from July 8, 1955 until the time of his death on October 21+, 1963. T. McCarty had many fine qualities. He was a true and helpful friend to all of us, and one who always put the interest of Parker Rural High above his own welfare. Y- Teen 1-2-3 Pep Club 1-2-3-U 1 1 Senior Class History On August 29j of 1963 sixteen seniors met to start the 1963-611 school year. Later Joyce Linnartz and Louise Stever Thomas enrolled so on Commencement night we were eighteen. We met with our sponsors, Mrs. Moore and Mr. Barnes and elected the following officers: president. Cherry Moore; vice-president, Bonnie Jo Ray; secretary, Irene Wishart; treasurer, Susan Quaintance; and student council represent- atives, Betty Harold and Stanley Prear. We had our first senior class party on November 12, a picnic at Parker Lake. Susan and Stanley participated over station KOPO on the Pepsi Party. We had several money raising projects: we had a bake sale, sold magazines, picked com, and climaxed with our Senior Class Play, Backwoods Romeo which netted us $78.50. We published twelve issues of the school paper. Panther Press; sponsored the sales of ads and the publication of the annual yearbook; Cherry Moore won the Betty Crocker Award; Irene Wishart and Stanley Frear were football King and Queen; Betty Harold and Bernard Dumcum were attendants; Susan Quaintance won second place in the magazine sales, Betty Harold placed second in the Osawatomie Graphic subscription contest, and Stanley Prear received the Outstanding Student Award. On Saturday morning May 9 we started on our Ozark trip, which took in several places of interest in that scenic region, and which was climaxed with a enjoyable day at the Coby Dude Ranch. Baccalaureate was on May 17 and our Commencement Services on May 20. Reverend Leonard Reifel was the speaker. Our class colors are powder blue and white, the red rose is our flower, and our motto, We have reached the bay in safety. Now the ocean lies in view. They had lost two classmates from the previous year, Patricia Garst, and David Yates. They met with their sponsors, Mrs. Adell and Mr. Delano and elected the following class officers: Gary Mahon, president; Donna Harvey, vice president; Richard Chambers, secretary; John Polley, treasurer; and Linda Singer and Bruce Boydston, student council. In October the class held a party at the city lake. They had a treasure hunt, a wiener roast, and a hayrack r i d 0 • In December the class presented the junior class play. Everybody's Crazy. The play wasa great success. On April 17 the juniors presented a junior senior banquet in honor of the seniors. The lovely banquet was held at the Blue Lantern Restaurant In Paola, Kan- sas. They met with their sponsors, Mr. Shire and Mrs. Irwin, and elected their officers: Douglas McCarty, president; Marylin Traul, vice president; Robert Chambers, secretary; Gloria Koontz, treasurer; and Charleta Dumcum and David Hodgson, student council. IXiring the year they enjoyed two class parties, one a hilarious Hobo Party the other a Fishing Party . Charleta Dumcum was elected cheerleader, and was one of the homecoming attendants. Four boys lettered in athletics; they were Doug McCarty, David Hodgson, Gary Lemon, and Robert Chambers. The Class presented a plaque to be hung in the halls of PRHS in memory of Thomas B. McCarty. On August 29, 1963, Parker Rural High took us in as twenty-three freshmen. Guy Slater joined our ranks in October making our number twenty-four. We have had a profitable year in the music activities, the sports field, the Y-Teen and the P. P. A. work. We have ranked highest in the per- centage of our class on the Honor Roll each period. The Student Council and Sponsor planned several enjoyable parties and two trips to Kansas City. On Oct. 22 they entertained the students and teachers with an all-school dance. There were gay decorations and good refreshments. On December 20 was the traditional Christmas celebration, a program and gift exchange. On February 29, the Council in- vited the students and teachers to see the Cinerama, IVs a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. On April 8, 87 students and several of their teachers had a full day in Kansas City. The Nelson Art Gallery and several other places of interest were visited. In the eve- ning, they took in the Ice Capades. The last activity of the Council was an all-school party. The students enjoyed the well stocked sraorgasboard, dancing, and several types of games. Greenhand Initiation F. F. A. On September 6 nine F. F. A. boys and their sponsor attended the Mid-America Fair at Topeka. The local chapter was represented at the land judging contest at Lyndon on September 21. «4 , Dillard Ungeheuer, Bruce Boydston, Roy Nickell, and Doug McCarty were chosen to part- icipate in the F. F. A. Chorus at Manhattan. The boys made satisfactory profit from their Hog Project. They cleared $257 above the feed cost. On Wednesday evening May 13, the boys, their parents, and other guests met for the Award Banquet and social evening. For money raising, they had a foreign cookie sale and a Stunt night and soup supper. Part of the receipts from these projects were used to pay part of the expense for Debbie Cockran, Connie Barnett, Gloria Koontz, and Cindy Stroup at camp Hyde at Viola, Kansas. Homecoming On Wednesday, October 30 was the Homecoming Celebration. The band played the homecoming theme Over the Rainbow as the Royalty came up to be crowned. The Pep Club and the band formed a rain- bow as the queen, king,and attendants were crowned. The homecoming game was played against Moran. It ended with a victory for the Panthers 39-6.
