In Witness Whereof, we the Senior Class, the testators in the above and foregoing Last Will and Test- ament, have hereunto set our hand, in the presence of witnesses, this first day of April, A. D. 1938. Senior Claes The above and foregoing written instrument was subscribed by the testators, Senior Class, in our pre- sence and was acknowledged by them to each of us, and they at the same time declared the instrument so sub- scribed by them to be their Last Will and Testamentg and we, at their request, in their presence and in the presence of each other, have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses, this first day of April, A. D. 1938s Miiviggi I wrap Recall the time when we were classed as Fresh1es, so to speak? Then we looked up to seniors tall, and felt a little weakg Or walked into the wrong class room and felt as would a freak. And then we thought with horror of initiation week. XJ 922 For there were times we felt distressed, as if we were at war. Ah yes, we well remember all of this and somthing more, Q9 f 1 Our grades, we found would lift or fall according to our score. But green began to drop before we reached the sophomore door. The parties and the pleasures helped to while away the timeg So we kept marching onward till we passed the freshmen line. The sophomore class you'll recollect ns just a little betterg Our tribe BOB!! to show up more, and break the freshmen fetter. . - And soon the green was all forgot and we began to gather Q The knowledge that would help us on through every kind of weather. The problems that we found that year just lifted up like bubblesg Our English note books seemed to be our first and greatest troubles. A glimpse then toward the junior class which showed to us their stubbles, Did mke our path look smooth so far butojust beyond it doubles. The fun we had that year was 'such that we will e'er remember, So on we marched till we became brave juniors in September. As juniors, we our task did take to make the seniors gay- We worked, washed windows, even cars upon that certain dayg And then we took :Ln some more cash by working up a play. A banquet we were putting on and had to make the pay. The parties and the picnics, too, were all mixed in the plot. Of course there were some lessons due with pen and ink and blot, To keep the minds all working, and teach us all a lot Of things that were important in life that we knew not. And then the year came to an end, a parting time again, With just a few short months between till senior year began. And now that we are seniors tall, we think we have the power To look down on the freshmen small and sort of make them covrer. Our marks and credits we have made, our lives are now in flower, And when we've got our Sheepskin safe,we'l1 leave to build our tower.. And so, my underclassmen dear, we leave you this advising: 'Tis notzall pictures, cards, and rings and sneak day advertising. But when we wear our caps and gowns we'll know we are arising, To higher heights, because we know 'tis that that makes a nation, And so we hail with gladdest cheers, our coming graduation. '14 Ill Let's take a trip with the juniors to see what they have accomplished during their three years in Parker High. We find that the juniors have proved themselves an asset to Parker Rural High School. Their English Class supplied all the school news and jokes to the remainder of the school through their bi-monthly paper, 'The Chronicle. They sponsored a carnival last fall, the proceeds being used to finance the Junior-Senior Banquet. They chose as their play, Tea Toper Tavern. The boys gave loyal support to the basketball and football teams by supplying several first and second team members. The juniors boast of winning both the Girls' and Boys' Bas- ketball Class Tournaments. Early in the year the juniors elected class officers, pres1dent--Ev- elyn Povenmireg vice president--Lindley Coxg secretary--Lucy McHoneg treas- urer--Helen Alexanderg yell leaders--Gladys Stroup and Vernon Ellisg spon- sors--Miss Frederickson and Mr. Jilka. Their class mottoes are nB1ggest and loudest and Rowing, not drifting. We are confident that their senior year in P. R. H. S. will be as suc- cessful and as of much value as the former years have been. We L L fgy lwwuams The sophomores started out last year as Ngreen freshiesn and did all the green things that freshmen are expected to do. This year several sophomore boys reported for basketball and football and though none of them made the first team we feel that they will secure that position next year. As sophomores they have been very quiet and stud ous, that they might shine when they become upper classmen. We believe that if the sopho- mores keep climbing as they have in the past that they will be one of the out- standing senior classes of dear old P. R. H. S. This year they chose Phyllis Bohnert for their president, Caroline Saunders vice-president, Howardine Larson--secretary, Floyd Ray--treasurer, Jacquelyn Quaintance and Clayton Povenmire--yell leaders, Miss Eyman and Mr. Dwyer--Spon- sors. ag U U Q M BMJ Fifty-nine timid freshmen entered Parker High School last fall hoping that the initiation would not be unbearable. For several weeks they had to stand the teasing of the upper classmen concerning the severity of the initiation until the great dayn came. But as time went on they became as courageous as the rest of us. Following the example of the other classes the freshmen elected officers early in the year. They chose as their pres- ident---Willis Mattesong vice-president---Janetta Oakleyg secretary and treasurer--Wallace Dumcang yell leaders--John Parker Franse and Doris Car- min. The club had ninety-nine members with 1001 membership. We owe much of this success to our sponsor, Miss Frederickson, and the membership committee. Happy memories of the year include: Mother and Daughter Party, Dad and Daughter Party, Date Party--several of which were included in Community Week--and our weekly programs. Committee meetings were held each month to help make preparations for these activities. The success of the year was brought about through the excellent leadership of our sponsor, the cabinet, and by the girls willingness to follow the G. R. This large building with so many rooms and teachers almost frightens me. How will I ever learn where to go each hour and get acquainted with my teachers and olassmtesf 7-I'm still carrying my schedule with me so I will know where I am supposed to go. I have mde friends with two freshmen, a sophomore, and a junior, but alas! those seniors are unapproachable. I 8-I've learned the names of all my teachers but I do not know those that I have no classes under. One of them fthey told me he was the music teacherj looks like a student instead of a teacher. 9-I have thrown my schedule away because I no longer need it. One of my friends who has a good memory, has the same classes as I have, so I just follow her around. 10-Today I had my first big disappointment in high school. Everyone had been tell- 'ing me about the swell assembly program they had every Friday and I was looking for- ward to my first one very eagerly. But they d:ldn't have one today. I guess things ihaven't gotten started well yet. Nll-ly first week of school had worn me out so lother let me sleep this morning until 'I was ready to get up. I took advantage of this and slept until ten bells. I wish fthey wouldgtreat me that nice at school. 312-No sleeping until ten o'clock today. hmm made me get up early and go to church ,and Sunday School. Oh well, there are other Saturdays to look forward to. 13-Whoever called Honday blue londay surely hit the nail on the head. I didn't have uany of my lessons and when I tried to relax and forget my troubles in study hall the teacher came along, poked me in the ribs, and told me to get busy. 114--Congratulate mel A senior girl spoke to me today-but only to ask me to join ,Girl Reserve. I'd like to know what I'm getting into before I join. They tell me 'that lliss Frederickson is sponsor and she gave me an awfully sweet smile yesterday so I guess I'll ask her to tell me about it. ?l5-We had our first G. R. meeting today. I think I shall join because it will be interesting. They told us something about the organization in the meeting today. fl6-Nothing unusual happened today-except that I became acquainted with two more jseniors and three juniors. laybe by the end of this semester I will know all of th0me , 17-lhen I came back to school at noon, I could hardly get through the halls on ac- count of the lovesick couples standing around. Being as bad as all this now, I wonder what it will be like when school is half' over. 18--Oh sleep! Blessed sleep! I guess you've gone forever. Mama only took pity on ,me last week because I was starting to high school. Today she made me get up early and help clean house. I guess I won't look forward so strongly to next Saturday. ,2l-Some one mentioned football today. I wonder what it is. From what I can gather it must be a game. Wish they'd hurry up and start something. This is worse than grade school. we had recess there and we could go out and play thirty minutes each da . 22i-Today was another G. R. meeting. 1 learn more about it every week. I know that I'm going to join. They had a program today. It wasn't very long, though. I wish they'd hurry and start having those chapel programs or whatever they are. 23-Nothing happened today except that I got a bawling out in both my study halls. They took four bus loads so I went along. I didn't want to stay here and have class alone. Again I yelled but I don't know why I was yelling. 4-Blue Monday! Everything turned hopelessly black when I was presented with two quizzes today. Oh well, some teachers never will use any judgment anyway. 5-Regular diet of algebra and English, without any relish. My appetite for such is growing stale. 8-Blue Hound walloped us here today. The score was 30 to O. They must have lost because I didn't go out to yell for them. ll-Glee Club practice today. Doesn't sound as though they need me in there-I stop- ped singing once and you could not have told I stopped. They went on just as though I'd never sung. 15-Heard some of the seniors talking today-it seems that they are planning to have to do those things. Wellsville I guess I'll have to start go- to cheer them on. the seniors had their party. I have gone. They said that only a party soon. ' I wonder if we freshmen are allowed came here for a game today, and it was a tie 0 to 0. ing to the games. Maybe we would win if I were there 18-Usual old llonday routine, only more so. Tonight don't see why they didn't invite ms, I'd liked to seniors were allowed, but I saw Coach Jilka going in. 22-Our boys went to Pleasanton to play football today. They beat us by a score of 12 to 7. We'll hope for better luck next time. 25-This was my night. The freshmen had a party in the high school gym. I guess we had pretty much the same idea as the seniors because we invited Coach Jilka to our party. The seniors ordered their rings today. They got out of classes all day to select them. NOVEMBER 1-Nothing much doing. Had one unexpected quiz today. I probably flunked it be- cause I didn't have my lesson very well. 4-Floods! Both wet and dry-rain and assignments, respectively. Louisburg came down to play football today. It looks as if our boys can play better in mud and water up to their knees. We won by a score of 7 to O. 5-We get a long looked forward to vacation-teacher's meeting. 8-Lost nv fountain pen so I nude my first announcement in assembly today. That's what I call tough luck with tomorrow being the last football game of the season. Guess I won't get to see it. 17-Flu, aspirin, musterole-and the rest. Wish Thanksgiving were over because I haven't anything to be thankful for now. 18-The Public Speaking class had a tea so they could put into practice their art of conversation. I think they invited a few of the students in to tea. Too bad I was- n't at school. I always did like tea. 19-I've been in bed all day. But things are looking up because it snowed and they postponed the game. Maybe I'll get to see it after all. 23-The F. F. I really like basketball games, and we have a good team this year. How do I know? I didn't have to be told. We girls used to play basketball in grade school so I know some- thing about the game. 18-Tonight the senior class sponsored the picture show Pig-Skin Parade. They had free bus service so they had a large crowd. I wish they'd have them more often. I surely like picture shows. 21-The boys went to Prescott to play basketball tonight. The pocketbook is getting rather flat so I didn't go. They came back and told me about it. Tie won 26 to 25. 23-The sophomore class sponsored an assembly program this afternoon. Since this was Coach Jllka's first year at Parker, everyone was interested in what he might do in the way of winning. Eleven lettermen were among the squad of thirty-six boys that reported for football. with these boys as a nucleus, Coach Jilka built a team, who, when the season closed, had won four games, lost three, and tied one. Westphalia was the first victim to the tune of 21 to O. Playing on the local field, every member of the squad got into the line-up. Touchdowns were made by Stocklin, Barnett and Cockram. In the second game of the season at LaCygne, Parker made plenty of yardage, but was unable to cross the goal line but once. Blue lound, playing here, gave Parker its first defeat. The game was closer than the score indicated. On October 15 two teams of equal caliber met at Parker and after forty-eight minutes of hard play were still equal. The game ended in a 0 to O tie. Both Wellsville and Parker had an opportunity to score once as each had the ball on the five yard line, but in both cases the defense strengthened and prevented a score. In a game that was well played by Parker, Pleasanton took the long end of a 12 to 7 score. The game ended when, with the score 7 to 6 in favor of Parker, thirty seconds to play and fourth down and goal to gc, Pleasanton completed a pass over the goal line to give them the game. Barnett, Husted, Schriver and Goodall, all regulars were out with injuries in this game. The following week, Parker playing a good game in the rain and mud, defeated Louisburg 7 to O. Stocklin, who did a remarkable job of carrying the ball in the mud, went over in the first half for the only touchdown of the game. Franse made the extra point by plunging across from the two yard line. This was the home-coming game and a large crowd was on hand to see the mud battle. Hound City was winner of the Parker- Mound City game at Mound City- P6 to 0, Th, Mound City team who were eventually the County uchampsn, varied their attack to run up a large score. ' In a postponed game and also the final game of the season and the last game for the seniors, Parker made a touchdown on the first play to beat Kincaid 7 to O on the home field. A pass to Cockram was com- pleted to the fifty yard line and he legged it the extra point to make the score 7 to 0. Parker ran its consecutive string of victories to five before yielding to an opponent. Two losses were suffered and then again the victory march reached seven before another defeat was taken. All in all, fourteen games were won and five lost for a winning percentage of .737. Parker finished the league with eight victories and two defeats, thus capturing the league title for the first time in the history of the school. Parker defeated Blue Hound 32 to 14 in the first rou d of the oou ty tournament. Pleasanton, who was idle the first night, took Parker out of the running for the county championship by winning 56 to 28. In the consolation game, Parker again was subdued. This time Prescott was winner by a 32 to 28 score. Parker had previously defeated Prescott in league play, once by one point and once by two points. Parker entered the regional tournament at Kansas City in the Class A division. They were defeated by Washington Rural High 23 to 22 in an overtime game. The boys did not play their usual game, they seemed to be lost on the large floor. However, Parker has one consolation in the fact that lard Hi, the State Class A Champions, defeated Washington Rural by only five points. Twelve letters were issued by Coach Jilka. Those receiving letters and the nu ber of letters they have received in the sport are' larion Barnett, 43 Lloyd Cockrsm, 55 Junior Ingram, 21 lundell Franse, 23 Granville Stocklin, 25 Eldon Fife, 2, Charles Dedrick, 25 Ju ior Funk, lg Junior Cavinee, lg Dale Lemon, lg Albert Rues, lg Billy Calvin, 1. This was due largely to the faithful and willing cheerleaders. Gladys Stroup, our head cheerleader, proved to be a very capable leader for the other cheer leaders-Carl Peterman and Veda Fern Wlnelsno, who ln turn proved very capable of leading the student body. l Our cheer leaders attended every game, yelled, and made us vsll until we were hoarse. Of course we dldn't mind this because it usually helped to win the games. The shop, having eleven double benches, will accomodate twenty-two students at one time. Besides a check room containing about every other tool necessary for hand woodwork, each bench is equipped with tools that are commonly used in every day operations. In addition to the hand tools, the shop is equipped with a circular saw, jointer, band saw, lathe, and grinder. The department carries a large supply of native lumber which is sold to the students for the construction of projects. There are sixty boys enrolled in the industrial arts department this year--forty-four taking woodworking and sixteen taking mechanical drawing. One of the events much looked foreward to in this department is an industrial tour of Kansas City, during which such places as Kansas City Star, Kansas City Power and Light Co., Sheffield Steel Works, Ford Motor Co., Armour or Swift Packing Co. and Municipal Airport are visited. This two day tour has been made the last two years by students of the department and has proved very educational and enjoyable to all making the trip. In the farm shop all the simpler constructions and repair jobs that commonly arise on the average farm, are taught, A few of the more important projects are: farm blacksmithing concrete work tool sharpenlng, and machine repair. , , A great deal of interest is added to such projects as selection of desirable types of livestock, crops and poultry, by the fact that the boys who become the most effi- cient are permitted to represent our school in local, district, and state contests each vearo go din X2 Et 1555 E 4, ,nj 5?-. One hundred and twenty three students are enrolled in the four subjects taught by Mr. Jilka-shorthand, bookkeeping, secretarial course, and typing. A total of sixty students desired to take typing, but the number of typewriters in the department made . it necessary to limit the enrollment to forty-two. Five new typewriters were purchas- ed by the school board this year to help take care of some of the demand. The bookkeeping class is the next largest with thirty-three students participating in the recitation and laboratory work. Half of the bookkeeping periods are spent in practical work. Thirty-five students enrolled in shorthand, but the number has decreased the sec- ond semester to twenty-nine. Only one year of shorthand is taught and it consists of teaching the rules and the application of themg howe'er, much transcribing is done during the year. Fifteen students are enrolled in commercial geography taught by Mr. Elliott, twenty-five in commercial law taught by Miss Eyman, and twenty-four in business arith- metic taught by Miss Frederickson. For the irst time in several years business law is being taught in Parker High School. The twenty-five juniors and seniors enrolled in the class are so enthusiastic in their praise of the course that undoubtedly there will be a demand that it be offer- ed next year. The chief purpose of the class is to indicate to the student the in- fluence which the law exerts upon the conduct of business. This is done through dis- cussion of numerous business problems, legal relations, and actual cases which have been decided by the courts. Commercial arithmetic combines arithmetical processes with the principles of bus- iness. In the earlier chapters a review of fundamentals is given. Then they are appli- ed to practical and interesting problems. The later chapters are more informational and vocational in content. The commercial geography course is offered for one semester only,' a d is open to members of the freshman class. This course deals with trade routes where gy the United States carries on her trade with neighboring countries of the world. The main export and import agricultural products and commodities are discussed as to the importance of their rank in value both in production and in consumption. The course gives to the student ideas as to how the different commodities are produced and prepared to be used by the consumer. It also gives him information as to why there is such a wide var- iation in the cost to the consumer for the different imported goods. 36 1 T T 539 e 5 mm' fsqfill f U Ara ,Cs ,kan ji Gail ,fi fjyafm JM Q s 1,',n.4x.:s,, . f -R HQKX V X, x,, ,XW3gw .f1, r- I mt. el X3-' HOME E C ONOMICS Three years work is now offered in the Home Economics department, so that any girl may secure a major in that department if she wishes. The work is elective and open to any girl is school. There are approximately sixty-five girls enrolled this year. The first year's work is divided into one semester of foods and one of clothing. In the semester of foods, underlying principles of nutrition are taught and the fundamentals of cooking, preparing and serving of a breakfast. In clothing the uses of sewing machine, making of the most commonly used seams, hems, and stitches, the requirements of good design and suitable choice of styles and colors are stressed. Household articles involving both hand and machine sewing are made as are some of the simpler, plainer garments such as slips and aprons. The second year of work is really a continuation of the first. The work is divided again into a semester each of clothing and foods. In clothing a more detailed study of fabrics, design, and color is carcied on. Garments are made of silk and woolen materials as well as cotton. This year some very smart looking cotton and silk prints were made along with numerous skirts, blouses, capes, and jackets. A continued study of meal plann- ing is made both in theory and practice. An interesting and important feature of the work is the planning, preparing and serving of luncheons. About four years ago the third year course was added. It is called 'Home Living' and the subject matter covers a field almost as broad as the name. This course runs consec- utively for both terms and should be taken, preferably, during either thejunior and senior year. Some of the units covered in this course and as follows: The home and the familyg the family income and budget making, study of types of domestic architecture: colorsg schemesg choice and arrangement of furniture: home and community sanitationg communicable dlseasesg family health and home care of the sick, food for sick, and child care and de- velopment. It is intended to be not only informationalg but to give the girl a greater appreciation of the dignity and important of home making. The girls gain much usefulinformational and practical experience. At V8P10US tim68 throughout the years they serve at banquets and frequently displays of their clothing work are shown and fashion revues given. With this in mind the g1rl's physical education class of Parker Rural High School is organized and sponsored. The class has an enrollment of thirty-two girls. In order that more girls may have an opportunity to participate in the sports, the class is divided into two sections, one section meeting the sixth period, the other section meeting the seventh period of the day. Soft ball and tennis are played in the fall and spring when the weather per- mits outdoor play. Basket ball and volley ball are played during the winter. For each of these sports the class is divided into teams for the purpose of stimulat- ing interest through each team's attempt to attain the highest rating during the season. The basket ball inter-class tournament is the event of the year which cre- ates the most interest. Each class elects a captain and organizes its team. This year in the semi-finals the seniors defeated the freshmen by a score of 12-9. The juniors won from the sophomores by a score of 8-2. In the finals the sophomores were victorious over the freshmen by a score of 6-2. By defeating the seniors, the juniors again became champions, an honor which they have held for three years. ffm N ff K, N A mil K xt If fax Q K fx fx J ku Nywgvjaj Xb-.2 L6pZg5A ..., M v5vws'-WW--M-X ,, M , , ,,,,,,, FOR OUR GRADUATI FORHALS 8EE PoLs oN' Always the Newest in Coats, Dresses, Shoes and Accessories POLSON DRY GOODS CO.
