West Freedom Grade School Dutch Hill Grade School Perryville Grade School 12.- 'ir Dedication A man of energy and enthusiasm who accom- plishes much in little time - this characterizes the individual to whom We respectfully dedicate the 1954 TORCH - Mr. Donald McKelvey. No per- son who has ever observed him in the everyday tasks of operating our schools can help but be deeply im- pressed by these qualities. Discouragement seems to be a word which he has never included in his vo- cabulary. He is always able to meet every situa- tion squarely, conquer it, and move on. His inter- ests lie not only in classroom excellency but in extra- curricular accomplishments and participation. Be- cause of his wholesome and vibrant personality, Mr. McKelvey has become to us not only our leader and advisor but also an inspiration. If we can but imi- tate his example, our lives cannot help but profit by it. To show our appreciation for all he has done for the students of the Parker Area Joint Schools, with sincere gratitude we dedicate the 1954 TORCH to Mr. Donald McKelvey. One of the outstanding activities was singing at the annual school board convention at Kittanning, where the trio composed of Lois Pollum, Carol Matthews, and Pauline Mullen, the Junior Class ensemble, and chorus sang numbers that were received with very favorable commendations. The chorus did the musical accompaniment of carol singing to the pantomined Nativity scenes at Christmas. Other activities included the spring concert, May Day Program, and the Forensic contests in Clarion. In addition to developing their voices and learning to read music, the girls have acquired a better un- derstanding of the mechanics and techniques of singing and an appreciation of many different types of mu- sic from their participation in Chorus. The majority of the girls are also members of mixed chorus which helped in the presentation of the Christmas program. ..38.- ss . if f ss! i s- .. ig now ONE-G. Gallagher, H. Blymiller, K. The highlights of the show were the currently popular Dragnet acted in pantomine by john Kelly, Carl Terwilliger, Howard Blymiller, Raymond Seigler, and Robert Trillg a return engagement of The Parkettes - John Kelly, Howard Blymiller, Robert Trill, and Raymond Seiglerg and humorous renditions by the newly formed Jug Band. The end men for the mins- trel were Reynolds Welling, Duane Tremba, Bill Blymiller, Alan Moberly, Dan Overheim, and Richard Mar- nic with Steve Curry as the constantly heckled Mister Interlocutor. The Boys' Chorus helped to make our assemblies more interesting by participating in several of the pro- grams and they also took part in the May Day festivities. Many of the boys are members of mixed chorus. .39- ilh - - MIXED CHORUS Row ONE-L. jones, B. Ramsey, N. Kastory, M. Caldwell, R. Bowser, T. Caldwell, H. Blymiller, V. Lytle, S. Polm, L. The action started when Virgil Keech, a miser and the meanest man in town, comes into possession of an old deserted mansion, Kenforth. He was determined to fix it up and make a fortune out of it, but this was interrupted when Brenda Fortesque, a woman who has been searching for a haunted house, comes along and rents it. Before the new tenant can take over, Virgil Keech is murdered. With the arrival of the phony in- spector, suspicion swings toward him. Then he is cleared and the guilt is placed on the shoulders of Sherman Norton, Judy Keech's fiance. Finally, the truth comes out and Barrow, the old caretaker, confesses to the murder of Virgil Keech. This act of revenge was prompted by a frame-up that Barrow had suffered at the hands of Keech when he Was a young man. After Barrow confesses he becomes hysterical and commits sui- cide to end the play. .-421 JUNIOR PLAY Julie Butler , ,,,, , Doug Butler H , Dr. Ann Butler Tom Butler Mrs. Hanson , Hank Steincke H Warren , . An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but when the doctor is your wife - well, that's different. Dr. Ann Butler,s practice keeps her away from songwriting husband, Tom, and their high school-age twins, Julie and Doug. But when a Well-meaning neighbor, Mrs. Hanson, announces he is one of the final candidates for Mother of The Year, and Doug gets expelled from school because he can't take the fellows' kidding about his father being a housewife, Tom decides itls time to quit. Ann takes over the housework, but she also brings her office and her nurse, sarcastic, man-hating Pat Flanagan, into her living room which she turned into the office. Hank Steincke, an ex-vacuum salesman, saves the day, however, by getting some of Tom's songs published, Tom goes back to his housework, Ann moves her office back downtown, and julie and Doug are now proud of their parents, where at first, they were ashamed of them. It ends with the firm conclusion that it takes more than a house to make a home, and ffrom Father's point of view, at least,j more than an apron to make a housewife. .43- SENIOR YEARBOOK STAFF JUNIOR YEARBOOK STAFF Editor-in-chief Larry King Editor-in-chief A .,777 .,V7,.7, L orraine Blymiller Business Manager ,,,, ,, ,David Neely Assistant Editor ,,..,, ..vf,,, WilSOH MSSICI' Features Editor Jo Ann Buechele Business Manager ,,,,,, L Charles Mccall Literary Editor , ,,,, ,,,Dan Overheim Features Editor ,,,, . , , H Zeuhls Best Sports Editor ,,,,,, Bill Blymiller Literary Editor ,,,, ,,,,,, M ary Ellen Caldwell Art Editor ,,,, , ,,,Y,Y,YY,Y, Polly Mullen Sports Editor L, ,,,,. ,,,,,,,. The first job of producing our yearbook was soliciting advertisements from businessmen in Parker and surrounding towns and areas. Then came the task of writing, having pictures taken, collecting usable material, and finally putting the book together. The finished product, The 1954 Torch, is the result of these efforts. Although the book may lack perfection, the activities of producing this yearbook, like all the others in our school, has been a learning one.
