To go about your work with pleasure, to greet others with a word of encouragement, to be happy in the present and confident in the future, this is to have achieved some measure of success in living. E.O. Grover Mr. Tremba has served our school faithfully for the past nine years as a science teacher and as a friend to all. Gladly, has he served in extra curricular activities. His sense of humor and willingness to help in any situation has made him a favorite with the students of our school. So it is with sincerity, grati- tude and appreciation that we dedicate this book to Mr. Tobias C. Tremba, our teacher and friend. Torch Staff of '53 '9 I ' s '.,,u, if - , -4 , -s ll N- o s I , -. Try-outs are conducted by Mr. Tritle. The girls are chosen from classes nine to twelve. Parker High School has had a girls' chorus for the past several years. The mem- bership has grown until its enrollment ls greater than that of any other activity in school. The chorus has also accumulated a sizeable library of music. Its records include the best selections. A few examples are: Tschai.kowsky's Nutcracker Suite , l-Iallelujah Chorus , One World , Waring's arrangements of Hymn to Music , Comin' Tlu'u the Rye , and Little David . Chorus rehearses two hours a week. Through participation in chorus, high school students -have opportunities to develop their choral ability, which will lead to more enjoyable group 'singing in adult life. They also learn to appreciate good choral music as presented by professional groups. Under the direction of Mr. Tritle, the activity highlights of the year were: Christ- mas concert--caroling--May Day Festival. ...if 4 MM' t BOY'S CHORUS ff' Q' G K B. R. R. smrey, A. Bickel, B. Boy's chorus is getting more popular as evidenced by the fact that the enroll- ment is steadily increasing until there are now 30 members. During the Christmas festivities we broadcast a portion of the Christmas concert over the P.A. system at the Presbyterian church. This was followed by carol- ing the shut-ins and other people of the community. This evening of entertainment was climaxed by a party at the school cafeteria. We, also, shall never forget the outstanding number of the annual minstrel show--THE PARKETTS-- A colorful and entertaining pantomine of Daddy was given by John Kelly, Duane, Tremba, Howard Blymiller, and Raymond Seigler. Mr. Tritle, our director, is initiating plans for a regular mixed chorus for next year. 7 YEARBOOK First Row: M. Francisco, D, Fross, A. Tremba, M. Gerwick, S. L. Ramsey, N. Master, Miss Schmidt. Second Row: Mr. Corbett, P. Mullens, J. Beuchele, L. King, D. Overheim, D. Neely, B. Blymiller, J. Hepner. The 1953 Torch will arrive tentatively in May. Students and teachers look forward to receiving it each year. Their criticism will be varied, but the staff hopes they will be tolerant of mistakes. This year the staff has inserted new ideas in the way of features and in- cluded some of the old proven ones. The book is an attempt to portray school life in the eyes of a senior, including those things which will naturally be remembered The staff with the help of Mr. Corbett and Mr. McKelvey signed a contract with a different company this year. As a result there was some delay in getting started. There were new requirements and regulations that had to be studied and interpreted by our editors and staff. The senior staff and the newly elected junior staff sincerely hope that you as a reader will find this book educational, entertaining, and interesting. The staff wishes to express sincere appreciation to Mr. Corbett, Mrs. Gardner, Mr. Holmgran, and Miss Schmidt who have given generously of their time and guidance. This year, under Mrs. Hamilton, we have a regular class which meets twice a week. Our activities are varied. We made murals of the four seasons as our main project during the first semester. They are now displayed in the cafeteria. After Christmas we did textile designs using linoleum block. By being members of this class, we hope to realize a growing inclination toward the more beautiful things of life. We want to learn how to use our leisure time to make our future homes more attractive and how to bring lasting and satis- fying enjoyment into our lives and the lives of those about us. Q Intramurals IS an activity established for high school boys who do not have enough time or ability to participate in varsity sports. The enrollment of boys' intramurals reached the point this year where it became too large to be accommodated in one group. Therefore, it had to be broken into three separate sections. This arrangement was more 'acceptable to the boys because it gave additional playing time to the individual. The groups concentrated on the fundamentals of football, basketball and softball. Through this they added to the character of the partici- pant a better understanding of sportsmanship. This activity is sponsored by Mr. Pager. ffffalfffmt SENIOR PLAY CAST Seated - B. Maxwell, B. Buzard, Miss Schmidt SEVENTEENTH SUMMER This play was dramatized by Annie Coulter Martens from the book by Maureen Daly. It is a very good type of play for high school production as it deals with problems encountered by all members of a typical American family. The author supplies human interest, good humor, and educational comments on difficult problems through the vehicles of life-like characters in life-like situations. The class of 1953 feels that SEVENTEENTH SUMMER was the beginning of a plan to bring better quality plays to our community. It was well received by the public and was the object of many favorable comments. Several of the members of the cast gave commendable performances. Outstanding were Mary Lou Pipher as Angie, Martha Gerwick as Kitty, Joan Mullen as Mrs. Morrow, and Ned Horner as Jack. McElory, E. Jolly A DATE WITH JUDY A DATE WITH JUDY is the story of a typical American family, the Fosters. Randolph, the youngest of the two Foster children, is constantly teasing someone. Judy, the Foster's other child, is interested in becoming queen of her club's dance. Since the girl who raises the most money for the community relief fund will become queen, Judy decided to enter a number of contests as a way of raising money. Judy enters the names of her family and friends in the different contests that are run, specifying that the winning money should be contributed to the community relief fund in her name. Judy wins no prize money but she receives all kinds of merchan- dise. Mr. Foster is accredited the award of honorable mention for having the most kissable lips. Mrs. Foster is overcome with 24 bottles of hair dye. This three-act comedy adapted from the radio program of the same name affords a close-up study of some of the problems of the American youth and the effect of them on their families. Humor, pathos, human interest and philosophy are inter- woven and expressed through real characters. This play will be remembered as one having real interest and value. Ned Horner as president has just called the Student Council to order, Norma Johns, acting Secretary-Treasurer is ready to record any business discussed or acted upon and the president of each class and an elected representative are present as members of this group of students who have a voice in the many problems of our school. We, the members of the Student Council, as representatives from our respective classes try to be alert to the problems of our classmates and to bring these problems up for discussion. This year our activity has touched the following projects: making plans to pick and bring to the students one movie monthly which we think will be liked, rules regarding the disposing of lunch papers, bags, and trash during lunch period, and rules and supervision of election of cheerleaders. We feel we have had a taste of democracy and self government through Student Government and that much more could be done in the future. Mr. Tremba, our sponsor, has just mentioned that our time is about up. A motion is quickly made and seconded and the meeting is adjourned. Tri -Hi -Y First row - M. Goodman, E. Weckerly, O. The National Honor Society is made up of students from the senior high that have a superior scholastic standing. You become a full-fledged member in the last semester of the junior year. Sophomores and first semester juniors are +emporary members. In addition to scholastic standing the N.I-l.S. stresses leadership, sportsmanship, creativeness, and resourcefulness on the part of all its members. It attempts to build better character and molds worthwhile values in the lives of its members. We have had several meetings throughout the year at which we discussed some of the modern arts-painting and music-and gave our individual views on some of the current world problems. This year the National Honor Society is sponsored by Mr. Corle, our social studies teacher. OUR GANG .' ' ,' 1' Doaurrn-na. a-luv-I E!! f . , hx H ,A li K 'H,,,.,5a Jlph-aucnAMcn.
