To be young means to throw snowballs, to break windows, to ,race hot rods. But it is youth that has the vision which materializes into a great book, a great build- ing, a marvelous machine, or a split atom. Youth is dissatisfied with the present, is an- noyed by restraint, dislikes half measures From compromise and things half-done, Keep me, with stern and stubborn pride, And when, at last, the iight is won, God, keep me still unsatisfied. It is to this spirit of youth that the class of 1952 of the Allegheny-Parker High School dedicates this book. 5 DONALD MCKELVEY B.A. Westminster College M.Ed. University of Pittsburgh ...3.. Even though they were separated into two classes they elected their officers together and had all their activities together. Collectively this class has much ability-music, athletic, scholastic-and we are looking forward, hopefully and confident of good achievement, in the next three years to come. GIRLS' GLEE CLUB This year the chorus has been under the direction of Mr. Tritle. The two main activities of the chorus were the Christmas and Spring con- certs which were both well received by the public. Other activities included singing at various school functions, sponsoring the movie An American in Paris and competing in the Forensic Contests. Membership in chorus benefits the students in many ways. It creates a better appreciation of choral music, helps develop individual talent, and pro- vides pleasure from enjoyment of singing. The girls have put forth their best efforts to make a successful chorus this year and they hope to do just as well in the coming year. O ....32.. Third row: R. Bowser, R. Radaker, R. Marnic, V. BOYS' CHORUS The Boys' Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Charles Tritle, has done ex- ceptionally well this year, considering that they have only one period a week for practice. There are thirty-seven boys in the chorus which are taken from grades nine to twelve inclusive. Last fall the boys' chorus had an entirely new experience. They put on a minstrel which was well received by the public. Because of insufficient periods for practice it has been impossible to have a mixed chorus this year, but there are indefinite plans as to a mixed chorus next year. The boys in the chorus profit considerably from their membership. Although it takes a lot of hard work to have a good chorus there is also time enough for some fun. The boys think that congratulations are in order for Mr. Tritle, who has done a very good job with the chorus this year. Third row: L. Blymiller, M. Gerwick, N. Trout, E. Grazier, D. Fross, M. L. PRESS CLUB The Press Club is an organization that pub- lishes the school paper every two weeks, or whenever special occasions arise, for news is printed from both the grade school and high school. Members are pupils from ninth grade through twelfth grade, with each member having a special duty concerning the publica- tion of every issue of the paper. The staff tries to get all of the news going on both in school and school activities, by summing up the events of the occasions in one or two interesting paragraphs. In return, the members get the experience of composing, writing, and printing the paper. All of the typing for the paper is done by the senior typists. Mr. Holmgren, Mrs. Dore, and Mr. Schu- mann are the advisors, and have been very cooperative in helping with the paper. The staff is as follows: Co-Editors , .. . .,.. B. Dearolph, B. JUNIOR AND SENIOR YEARBOOK STAFF It might be of general interest to learn that work on the school's yearbook begins shortly after the opening of school in the fall, and continues into a year- long task. The Senior Staff, assisted by an elected Junior Staff, spends many hours in soliciting advertising, selecting and editing material, all of which must be care- fully arranged to compile a book suitable for publication. The Torch Staff of '52 hopes its efforts have been successful. To the teachers who so willingly gave of their time and labor that this yearbook might be a success, we extend our sincere thanks. STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council is an attempt to give stu- dents opportunity to take active part in the policies of their school. Through it they can bring to the attention of the student body and faculty, any issue that they consider neces- sary. They can do this in a way that causes a minimum of argument and disagreement. Our student council consists of a member from each class elected by the entire member- ship of that class plus the presidents of each class. The council members elect a president and the presiding officer to conduct the meetings. Some of the activities the council has worked on are: the selecting of class rings, working out assembly programs, selecting series of movies, and they are now trying to select a name for the basketball team. The student council is under the supervision of Mr. Tremba and Mr. Holmgren. .-36m Third row: R. Shirey, K. Stocker, E. Blauser, A. Bickel. A. Moberly. Second row: A. Tremba, S. L. Ramsey, J. The Honor Society was organized with the objec- tive of developing character and leadership in those who deserve it. The membership is made up of students who have a B average or better, are regular participants in school activities and are morally straight. In 1922 there were a total of twelve chap- ters in the U. S. The number has increased steadily so that by 1950 there were 4,500 chapters. National Honor Society was first intro- duced into our school two years ago by Mr. Schumann who was a member of the society in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We received our charter from the National Association of Secondary School Principals in Washington, D. C., after the approval of the State Department of Public Education In- struction, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Betsy Polm and Betty Kastory, two senior members, took a National Honor scholarship test. This test was given to National Honor students from all over the United States. The winner will have his way paid to the college of his choosing. The main activity of the society this year t . sponsor a square dance. The proceeds were used to buy books for the library. -37-. Standing: Mr. Tremba, C. Johns, M, McCall, J. Pipher, A. McKee, R. SENIOR PLAY CAST The Senior Class of A.P.H.S. presented their class play, The Campbells Are Com- ing, on April 17 and 18, 1952. The play is a three act comedy by Jay Tobias which takes place in the Ozark Moun- tains. Kaye Brannigan returns from Clarion Col- lege full of culture. Much to her family's dis- gust, she breaks off with sturdy, dependable Jeff Scudder and announces her engagement to a young snob, Kingston Campbell. Learn- ing that Kingston's mother believes that the Brannigans are hillbillies and that Kingston and his mother are coming for a visit to find out the truth about the family, the Branni- gans disguise themselves as hillbillies and re- ceive the guests in the absence of Kaye, who has gone to town to get everything from caviar to tuxedos to impress the Campbells. The Brannigans appear barefoot, dressed in rags and carrying shotguns, frightening the --58 Campbells half out of their wits. One funny situation follows another. An old hen lays an egg in Mrs. Campbell's nritzy hat, jeff starts a feud with Kingston and chases him with a rifle. Mrs. Campbell faints and is accidentally revived from a jug of moonshine, leading her to make some startling revelations of her past life. At last Kingston indignantly refused to marry Kaye and the Brannigans rejoice that their scheme has worked. just as the Camp- bells are about to leave, Kaye walks in, wrath- fully demanding explanation of what has tak- en place. How the Brannigans finally maneu- ver the Campbells into leaving and how Jeff turns cave-man to win Kaye form the up- roarious climax of the play. We wish to thank Miss Spano and Mr. Tremba for their time and patience in the direction of our play. We would also like to thank Mr. Egidi for the help he gave us in setting up our stage. Seated: B. Clawson, A. Tremba, M. Francisco, Master, A. Moberly, M. Gerwick. Second row: Mr. Holmgren, M. L. Pipher, N. Horner, J. Mullen, B. Maxwell, S. L. Ramsey, Mrs. Dore. JUNIOR PLAY CAST The junior Play was presented to the public November fifteenth and six- teenth. 'fAunt Min Drops In, written by James Stone, was a three act farce with a ranch out West as the setting. Each player was well suited to the character he portrayed. The cast, as a whole, worked exceptionally well together to present an excellent performance. The West, as we know it today, is not the wild, wooley west of yesterday. But sometimes you begin to wonder when you hear of such escapades as those that took place at the Downey ranch last summer. The ranch was in a continual uproar from the time Ivy and Gracie May arrived as summer guests until their 'fAunt Min Dropped In. Of course Aunt Min did not arrive until several other persons came, including an escaped con- vict, who had been mistaken for her. The play proved to be a great success as an evening of entertainment and as a financial gain for the class. We wish to thank our directors, Mrs. Dore and Mr. Holmgreng and the stage hands for helping us to make our play a success. -39- Fourth row: C. Elliot, A. Moberly, C. Johns, R. Dunkle, V. Pollock, B. BOYS' INTRAMURALS Boys' Intramurals consists of any boy from the seventh to the twelfth grade who is interested in athletics. During the time when it is too bad to go outside, basketball, volleyball, and tumbling are played: when the weather permits softball is played on the ball field. The whole group is broken down into two groups so as to make it more convenient and give them more playing time. While the boys are playing they are learning sportsmanship and learning to know each other better. This club is directed by Mr. Pager. Seated: B. Pierce, D. Hilliard, M. Amsler, Mr. Pager, LI. GIRLS' INTRAMURALS On the third period of every Tuesday, a group of girls take some time for an hour of good healthy sports. This group is comprised of girls from ninth through twelfth grades who are especially interested in sports. During the school year the girls play baseball, basketball, and volleyball. They also have a few periods of tumbling in the spring. This club affords to its members the opportunity to learn better sports- manship, to make new friends, and to develop more fully their physical bodies. The club is supervised by our physical education teacher, Mr. Pager. Seated: B. McElroy, K. Stocker, D. Neely, D. Overheim, L. King, E. Blauser, R. Cooper, Mr. Corbett. Standing: B. Cook, C. Buzzard. R. Elder, D. Monroe. A. Moberly, C. Elliot. NATURE CLUB During this school year this club has studied several phases of nature. Discussions were conducted on such fields as hunting, fishing, game laws, and game conservation, and safety in handling guns. These subjects proved of in- terest to the membership which is entirely boys. Several hikes have been taken on which the club members study nature in the field. When warmer weather arrives the club hopes to take many more hikes. The club has added to its collection of reference books and reading ma- terial. Many pamphlets have been made available through the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Nature study can lead to a profitable vocation, an enjoyable hobby, or to better understanding of life and its complex network of inter-relationships. TRI-HI-Y The club was introduced in Parker for the first time in October, 1946. Since then the membership has increased to twenty mem- bers. It was organized to interest girls in com- munity life and to create future leadership. The regular meetings are held every two weeks with the cabinet meetings being held during the odd weeks. Each meeting is opened with devotions which are followed by a selec- tion of songs, hymns, Tri-Hi-Y Song, and a few modern versions of the old -and remem- bered. After the business session is closed, a program is given by one of the members of the club. It consists of skits and discussions on dating, manners, parent and child relation- ship, and one of the most enjoyed programs was that of the Valentine Party held in one of the class rooms. The most important ac- complishment of the club this year was the trip to the Clarion County Home of the Aged. Objectives of Tri-Hi-Y are to improve the body, mind and spirit, and promote fellow- ship, good will, and friendship. I The platform of the club is Self Improve- ment, Christian Fellowship, and United Serv- ice. Our club advisor is Miss Reithmiller. Many types of art were used, some of these mediums were charcoal drawing, water coloring, finger painting, clay modeling, and various types of designing. At Christmas time, the students designed and painted candle holders. They created flowers out of paper, and painted maps on material for wall decorations. Anyone who is interested in any type of art can find his interest in this club. The membership is small this first year of its existence, but we hope that more students will join the club next year.
