The outstanding of which are: the addition of a Home Economics department, an Industrial Arts shop, and a four unit building to house these new departments. Our athletic program has been broadened along with the gen- eral broadening of the curriculum. This enlarged curriculum has necessitated an increase in the teaching staff. ' These improvements have come about as a result of the inter- est of many people. There have been those who decided that a change was needed, those who decided what the change should be, those who gave the ideas life and direction, and those who made the ideas iina'ncially possible. All of these people deserve our sincere appreciation. America has always been grateful for her religious, political, and educational freedoms. Our free schools are part of this great Ameri- can tradition, and we, the seniors of A.P.H.S., have come to realize and more fully appreciate this priceless heritage. To those persons who have supplied words, ideas, time and labor, and have supported our free schools-their continuation and improvements,-we the Senior Class of 1951 proudly and grate- fully dedicated this, the 1951 issue of the Torch. -2- FACULTY x Seated: Mr. Holmgren, Miss Spano, Mrs. Dore, Mr. Stocker, Miss Reithmiller, Mrs. Gardner, Mr. Tremba Standing: Mr. Tritle, Mr. Schumann, Mr. Laurich, Mr. Corbett, Mr. Irwin, Mr. Pager. Lesser, R. Chambers, L. Harriger, E. Graizier.. CHRL9 Girls' chorus is a very useful and enjoyable activity for all who take part in it. There are many reasons for this being true. We who take part in it do so because we enjoy music. Chorus affords us an opportunity to develop our singing voices. We learn to cooperate happily and sincerely, each of us contributing our singing voices. We learn to co-operate honor to our school and community. After a few weeks in chorus we begin to appreciate more deeply music which is pre- sented for our entertainment through radio, television, etc. Before taking chorus we may have heard songs which seemed to us a poor example of music. Perhaps a madrical or motet which sounded like an unharmonizing jumble of voices. After taking chorus we can realize and appreciate the fact that it took accurate and intensive work to produce such musical perfection. C HORUS Although we have chorus weekly, we strive to present two certs throughout the year. Our for each concert is to have the quality of our individual voices only twice or three con- set standard very highest blended into beauty in song-a concert that our parents attended, and one in which we, as chorus members, will be proud to have participated. To get out of chorus, all the possible good mentioned above, we must have an able in- structor. Mr. Tritle' just entered our school this year, and we know he is a fine addition to it, especially to our chorus. He is a very conscientious leader who has done a fine job. We wish to express our appreciation to him, for his time .and effort toward making our chorus, ensemble, trio, and soloists a real suc- cess for the past year. RUTH CHAMBERS First row: A. Moberly, R. This is one activity they appreciate. Boys' Chorus consists of approximately twenty-four members and we are certain there will be more next year. Boys' Chorus was organized by Mrs. Girard in the year of 1947, but is now under the direction of Mr. Tritle. We take our hats off to you Mr. Tritle, for the wonderful leadership you have shown. The boys are learning a great deal: to read music, to join their masculine voices in harmony, experience singing before a group of people, and to co-operate wholeheartedly. We wish the Boys' Chorus and Mr. Tritle continued success in their en- deavor. LEONA STEELE - 29 - First row, seated: C. Terwilliger, R. Kriebel, V. Shawl, A. Tremba, F. Barger, S. Clark. JUNIOR AND SENIOR YEARBOOK STAFF This year the yearbook staff was hampered by insufficient meeting time in the early part of the year, but after a late start, which hindered the book's prog- ress, the staff organized its ranks and began to piece together the material for the book. The Hrst job was to scan the surrounding territory in search of advertising. The job was completed with the co-operation of many fine businessmen. Second was the written material, donated by the students, which spells the difference between a good and a poor book. This year the written material was procured through the help of Mrs. Dore, who donated time from her English classes to help the students with writeups. From these writings the best were selected for publication. The third part was piecing the book together, deciding what should be printed and how it should be arranged. For the task many hard evenings work were given by the members of the staff, but through it all a very practical lesson was learned. The staff and everyone connected with the publication of this year's book hope that it will be enjoyed by all who chance to read it and they would also like to thank each and every person who contributed to the production of the book. Its purpose is to create and maintain throughout the school and community high standards of Christian living. Our regular meetings are held every two weeks, each being opened with a worship service consisting of a Scripture Reading, Prayer, and a number of sac- red songs, including our Tri-Hi-Y song to the tune of Tell Me Why. This is then followed by a business session in which we discuss such subjects as our pro- gram at the Veterans' Hospital or things that will do some good for our commun- ity and all concerned. Then our program: this is where we all take part bringing up our various problems such as dating, etiquette, and in trying to create and ob- tain a higher Christian standard. . This is not only helpful during our school years, in which we are creating habits of pure thoughts, words, and deeds as our emblem stands for, but will be an asset to us in our later years. If we strive to attain Christian standards through our thinking while in high school, it will remain in the years to come. ALT:-IEA McK.r-:E -33... Seated: C. Zilafro, R. Bowser, L. King, H. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is the only organization in school controlled mainly by the students themselves, aided by Mr. Tremba as sponsor. The group is com- prised of students elected from each class, along with each class president. The duty of the group is to cope with, and settle problems that occur in school life. Student Council acts as a Congress in our school, settling such problems as, selecting class rings, what movies shall be shown, and any other situations which confront the student body. It saves time, and solves many problems which would have to be taken be- fore each class individually otherwise. The Council has proved to be very worthwhile and successful to our school. BARBARA GRAHAM i 9 T L Cfli The Iota Chapter of the Omega Xi Fraternity was organized in 1919. In the past the fraternity was much more influential than today. The boys in the active Fraternity brought in new members by a boobing or hazing period. Down through the years the true idea of the Omega Xi has- faded out of existence. The monthly letter to the National Head and National dues were forgotten. Until now all that is left of the original organization is the boobing period. The last of the Omegans are trying to get the Fraternity re-organized to a worthwhile organization. Seated: J. Dunkle, B. Lesser, N. Master, M. Francisco, Mr. Schumann, B. Kastory, M. Gerwick, S. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is both an entertaining and an educational or- ganization. The qualiiications for membership are: the students must have good character and maintain a B average throughout the year. The club has written up a constitution and has received a charter from Harrisburg. At the society meetings subjects of general interest are discussed: modern painting and how it differs from that of the older painters, movies, as to whether the roles are played convincingly and wellg music and literature. The Class was proud of the success of the play as enjoyable entertainment and financial gain. The plot of the play consisted of a man and a woman, who had both been married be- fore and had teen-age children, preparing for marriage. But much to their surprise, both groups of children were jealously resentful of their parents re-marrying. Their actions of trying to break up the intended marriage provided good entertainment to the old as well as the young folk who were gathered in the audience. However, after a considerable length of time, her chil- dren and his found one another quite likeable and interesting persons. In the end they settled their differences in a sensible way and showed signs of becoming a very happy family. The outstanding performances were given by Bonnie Dearolph as the youngest of the children, Betty Kastory as the elder daughter of Agnes Martyn, Joe Pipher as the colored handy man, and Fred Bowser as the widower. The situation is made more humorous with the aid of the maiden guests at the home, Cwho are there mainly to find husbandsj and several other reporters and bodyguards. Everything ends satisfactorily when Mr. Boylston is greatly impressed by the arrival of a millionaire, Joshua Perkins, and his wife CMarlene Marnic and Ray Bowserj, and Laura linds her man in the form of the real song writer, Jud Clarendon. BOYS' INTRAMURALS Boys' Intramurals is an organization sponsored by Mr. Pager to benefit those who may not have the ability to take an active part in Varsity sports. The object of intramurals is to give each boy an opportunity to participate in basketball, soccer, volleyball, and many other such sports. As well as teaching the boys co-operation and good sportsmanship, it is ben- elicial from the physical and social standpoint. BAND In spite of the fact that this is the first year A.P.H.S. has had a band, we feel that the members, under the direction of Mr. Tritle have given us something of which we can be justly proud. The Band was hampered greatly due to lack of sufficient periods in which to practice, but still it participated in many activities. With the co-operation of the P.V.F.D. it led the annual. Halloween Parade and played a part in the Christmas Concert, and also the Spring Concert. Each member thoroughly enjoyed this year of instruction under Mr. Tritle, and hopes to produce, in the future, a band to take its place among the best of high school bands. 1411 Mr. Laurich, F. BOXING CLUB The Boxing Club is one of the new organizations of this year, and it extends membership to any student who wants to learn some principles of self-defense. Mr. Laurich is the instructor of the club. Mondays, first period the club meets in the Industrial Arts Shop. The mem- bers are divided into groups according to weight, and they box three-minute rounds with one minute rests between. The purpose of the Club is not merely to see who is the best boxer, but to teach principles of self-defense. It was handicapped due to the lack of boxing gloves, and owing to the fact that not enough participated. Whether it will continue in the future is, as yet, undecided.
