Only education stands between man and the vast unknown, a shielding foil strengthened by our faith and by our determination to stride boldly through the future. Thus, we can bravely follow our rockets to the utmost reaches of space, confident that the education We have gained at Parker has armed us with the attitudes and knowledge We need to face these new horizons. y, A L X 3 if-If W3 as- rw- 4 'QA ii 'Q- Q' Sn- LANGUAGES Mrs. Margaret Barry Miss Dorothy Bresnahcm Mr. Marcus Chadwick Miss Eva Iulstrom Miss Mary Maloney Mr. Fred Manz Miss Margaret McNulty Mr. Henry Morris Miss Dorothy Odell Mrs. Mary O'Hara Mrs. Beatrice Owens Miss Iuanita Parson! TO TE t I t W tw JVC This year we gave 105 diplomas to our February graduates, and we plan on giving diplomas in Iune to 173 graduates. Times are now uncertain: and if you can go on to college, you will find that it is worthwhile. To our students in school I wish to say that the Board of Edu- cation is spending S4l0 a year on each student in our school. We feel that you are Worth that, or we would not have public schools in Chicago. Let us all make the most of our opportunities. Best wishes to all our students and graduates for the future. Sincerely, 905. ine Principal O' -:I , , ,.,. J wi 5 4,9 is 634,11 ' QE f xqfmfi QQ 2, 'fl rj MESSAGE TO THE GRADUATES To the 1954 graduating classes of Parker Hgh School my most sincere congratulations! Four years ago, upon your entrance into high school, graduation seemed to be far away. Now you have reached that goal. For some it has been easy and pleasant: for others is has doubt- less entailed certain hardships. However, every graduate has attained a certain measure of success that marks a fulfillment of dreams, ambitions, and desires. My Wish for each and every one of you is that the achievement of this goal will be only one of many steps on the ladder of success. I hope that you will take with you many pleasant and inspiring memories from Parker High School. A V . - I H H WE SHOOK THE FAMILY TREE The February, 1954, senior c1ass's presentation of We Shook the Family Tree was a big success. The actors turned in their best performances, and the audiences loved them. The play concerns Hildegarde Dolson Q1-Xnn Sheridan and Kay Kontosj, who is tired of being a wallflower, and the trouble she encounters when her patient and helpful mother tDorothy Nelson and Carol Litvakb arranges a date with Freddie Shermer CRon Palmb through his mother cRoberta Brown and Marcia Zoltyb. Mr. Dolson is played by Ronald Nelson. The difficulty stems from the fact that Freddie, who is really a nice boy, is forced by his mother and father CCarl Riedelj to wear knickers, which make him the laughing stock of his high school. When Hildegardes brothers Bob and Jimmy tRichard Gifiey and Charles Reverb. and Bob's little southern belle qEleanor Hughes and Elaine Hickeyb, and her girlfriend fLoretta Iacoby and Maudell Parkerh find out about Hildegarde's heavy date, matters become unbearable for her. Hildegarde, however, talks Freddie into finding a pair of long pants for the Prom, even if he has to steal them Qwhich he does, much to Bob's embarrassmentlt and Hildegarde is blamed for all the misfortunes which ensue, even to the dis- tribution of her parents' love letters, nicely executed by Paige fNora Deneen 1, a six year old mailman. Everything turns out well, however. Freddie gets his long pants, Hildegarde is forgiven, and everyone is happy. The play was ably directed by Miss Margaret McNulty. 1 E 1 41 7- JUNE CLASS OFFICERS President. . . , Charles Williams Vice President . ,Pat Walters S et Rita Featherstone ecr ary. . The play concerns Mrs. Abigail Fortitude Abbot CMari1yn Kay Babb and Betty Bretzj and her daughter, Susan Abbot CSue Davis and Arlene Olsonj. The plot revolves around Mrs. Abbot's attempt to support herself and her daughter by going to Pointer College on a scholarship. This causes some consternation for Dean Gillingham Clohn Loughlin and Bob LashD and Pro- fessor Michaels CDon Matheny and Ron Yatesj. The girls' housemother CBarbara Spencer and Ioan Huffackerj tells Sylvia Uune Ryan and Rita FeatherstoneD and Clara CLiz Kohen and Pat Cavanaughb about the new girl . Meantime, Bunny Cloanne Lockwood and Phyllis Harlow D, Helen CVonna Bryant and Ioanne Magliere D, and Carrie CAnn Stack and Barbara Evansj complain about their new roommates. At the dance Abigail is a big success: and Ia :k CBob Stik and Mike Sapienza J, Howie CFrank Racz and Bob Parker D, and Bill CTom Gialamas and Bob Panosj all ask her for dances. To make matters worse Professor Michaels escorts Abigail, and this outrages Susan, who is deeply in love with him. Bobo Cfton De Pesa and Dave Wulfersj, the Senior Class big shot, is hopelessly in love with Susan. Events work up to a crisis, and Abigail and Susan are almost expelled, but there is a happy ending. Both women get their men. Supporting members of the cast were: Donna Kitchen, Iulia Worden, Ruth Gifford, Delores Sears, Maryann Kalter, and Phyllis Engelhart. . ff wiv? Parker's Senior Honor Society, a group of juniors and seniors with E averages, and their new sponsor, Mrs. Eddy, have been a marvelous team this semester. Miss Eddy has long been interested in the Honor Society's activities which include supplying scholarship information, and, on the social side, an occasional project to support the Senior Mothers' Tea. Many of the 4A mimbers are also members of the National Honor Society we are p.oud to slate. Altogether the society is an enthusiastic, co-operative group which encourages all students to Work for that E average that makes them eligible. We hope in the future it will Welcome in- creasing numbers of underclassmen to its ranks. This organization has been respected in the past, and we feel sure this respect will continue to grow in the future. Page 'S SENIOR HONOR SOCIETY Row Row How Row Rozv Row Row Row . Pwqe 97 VARSITY FOOTBALL The 1953 Parker High School football team under their new coach, Ed Tobin, brought our school some recognition on the gridiron. With a few good breaks, this team might have gone even further than it did: it had the ability and the coaching. Coach Tobin had only two weeks to get the team ready for its first league game: and with cooperation from the boys, we won that game 18 to 0. There were many exciting moments during the last season that the players and spectators can never forget. We had one of the fastest teams in our league. In the backfield there was Cliff Iohnson, a hard runner, who was capable of breaking away at any time, lim Black, the smallest man on the team but a rugged boy, and Ed Rees, a good fast boy on pass and defense. All of the backfield was capable of playing good football fast: they were Bernard Hinson, Bob Beck, Iohn Lassiter, Art Goodman, Benny Robinson, Chuck Revoir, Riley Bridges, Iohn Hampton, Don Swanson, and Ron DePesa. We had the roughest pair of line-backers in the league in Chuck Revoir and Ed Pollard. On almost every defensive play, one of these boys was under the pile up. Our line averaged about 185 lbs., and it was rugged from end to end. One boy who deserves a great deal of recognition, is Darnell Hawkins. If you saw any of the games played, you will remember that no ball carrier got around this boy. Nick Karris was a great offensive and defensive player: Ron Palm was the lightest line-man on the team but one of the best. We had a regular center, Ken Gutsch, who really got some bumps but played good ball. Some of the other stalwarts up front were. Rollie Brown, Bob Tilquist, Chuck Wil- liams, Tony Ladas, Cress Mann, Richard Boren, Larry Rogers, Bill Paul, Ioe Doran, Bob Ramsdell, Richard Demblon, Gordon Davis, Gus Georgeapolis, and managers. SENIOR BASKETBALL TEAM The Parker High School Senior basketball team of 1954 opened its season officially on Ianuary 8th, Guard Robert Webber was the able captain of the team. Playing center were Don Giles and tall Robert Ingersoll. However, the February graduation forced Bob Ingersoll to leave the team. In forward posi- tions were Tom Hawkins, Robert Murphy, Ioe Doran, Paul Gibson, Ken Duddle- ston, and Don Matheny. Captain Bob Webber qualified as a guard along with Ed Rees, Bob Ramsdell, Tom Hart, Roland Johnson, and Clarence Iohnson. Forward Tom Hawkins proved to be the top scorer of the team. Out of a total of eleven games, he averaged twenty points per game. Prior to the opening day the Parker five participated in two tournaments. On December 21 and 22 at Calumet High School, they finished in third place. This was the South-town Tournament. The other contest was the Christmas Tournament. At Illinois Institute of Technology, the team finished with two wins against one loss. Parker's season of 1955 will see the loss of the Iune graduating seniors. Four excellent basketball players will graduate with many pleasant memories of their hard-fought games, their teammates, and their coaches. Captain Bob Webber is among the graduates. Forwards Ioe Doran and Don Matheny, and guard, Ed Rees, will also be leaving Parker and the team this Iune.
