Soon our lune graduates, numbering lQ4, will receive their diplomas. ln addition, we expect to award about 30 Cf.E.D. diplomas. ln all, we should have about 310 graduates in l951. War clouds are again appearing on the horizon. We hope any of our graduates who are called to the Service will come home safe and sound. However, we will lose our freedom unless we are willing to fight for it, Let us hope and pray for peace in our time. lf you have done well in school, my advice to you is to go on and secure further education. Chicago has many colleges and advanced schools. Take advantage of them. You will never regret it. Keep your heads high and cling to your ideals, Our best guide is the Ten Commandments --- recognized alike by the Catholic, the Protestant, and the lew. Observe these commandments and you will be happy here as well as hereafter. Sincere congratulations to each and every one of you. You are now numbered among the honored graduates of Parker High School, We are proud of you and hope to find in the years ahead that we can Continue to be proud of you. Members of this group are chosen from the 1951 graduating classes. Perhaps the most important part of the PlNE is the Art Staff. Not only do they lay out the PINE, but they assemble the undergradu- ates' pictures. This busy staff is under the capable direction of Mr. French. The editor of the February staff was Celia Moy, assisted by artists Paul Shille and Bill Busam. The co- editors of the Iune staff were loanne Naughton and Roger Bleck. Now smile was a familiar phrase often heard during the year. Parker was fortunate to have such an outstanding Photo Staff, whose members gave much time and energy in turn- ing out professional looking snaps. Parker will regret the loss of Larry Fulsang, Ed Hirsch, Byron Shinn, and Beverly McAlpine through graduation but will always remember them because of their superb work displayed throughout the l95l PlNE. Thanks must be given to the greatest photographer of all, Mr. Bloom! A wide-awake group of talented writers is our Literary Staff. Probably many students think the articles are written by the various English teachers but they are greatly mistaken. A staff, selected by Miss Odell, writes about the different activities. Active participants of the February staff were Don Thompson and Beverly Smith, co-editors, and sports writer Vernon Al- 1950 1951 bright. Co-editors-in-chief, Evelyn Barrett and Ianie Roberts of the Iune class, did an excellent job with the coeoperation of lean Logsdon, Dorothy Thomas, Ianet Wolberg, and Wilma Zillmer. Without these energetic staffs, the PINE would not be as great as it is. No PINE would be complete without the faithful support of our Advertising Staff. Miss Buland's Advertising class did much to make this PINE a huge success, combing the neigh- borhood for patrons who would be willing to contribute to this annual. lean Logsdon and Norma Singer, members of the Business Staff, deserve special credit for keeping accurate and efficient records of all PINE sales. Mr. Manz's whole-hearted support helped immensely in the achievement of per- fect records. Not to be outdone by the splendid work of the other staffs, the Sales Staff again came through with flying colors. While the various staffs were in the process of completing their responsibilities, this staff was hard at Work encouraging students to buy the PINE. Al- though it is unusually difficult to interest people in something invisible, the Sales Staff managed to do a splendid job. Each division elected a representative who was in charge of all sales for his own division. Through the combined efforts of these staffs, the PINE Will be a cherished possession for all. But here at Parker you don't have to be one of those brains , the only requirement is an average of E in all grades for the previous semester. There are two honor societies at Parker - the Senior Honor Society, composed of juniors and seniors, and the Iunior Honor Society for freshmen and sophomores. The Senior Honor Society, last fall, had as its officers: president, Martin Brecknerg vice-president, Iohn Manley, Donna Edwards as secretary, and Shirley Wallace as treasurer. The hard Working sponsor for the fall term was Miss Sarah Abelson. The spring term saw Larry Eulsang as president, Eleanor Kober as vice-president, secretary, Claudia Korffg and Barbara Barnes as treas- urer. The sponsor for this term was Mrs. Eileen Godfrey, who did a wonderful job inspiring the students, especially the 4A's, with the many scholarships she received from different schools. Mrs. Pearl Smith, the sponsor of the Iunior Honor Society for both semes- ters, did a very fine job. The officers for the fall semester were Eugene Torgenson, president, Ianet Warner, vice-president, Valerie Plutz, secretaryg and Fred Gustafson, treasurer. ln the spring Barbara Sway wes president, William Sechinger as vice-president, Ann Sheridan, secretary, and Alfred Lay, treasurer. The service of both Parker's honor societies is the same - to encourage scholarship and leadership in the students, to create a co-operation between students and teachers and to teach the importance of good grades for the future life. Every incoming freshman is urged to keep up his grades. By the time he graduates, if he has been in the honor society for seven semesters and has eighty service credits, he will be eligible for membership in the National Honor Society, a nationwide organization of honor students. LUNCH ROOM AIDES With the purpose of making the Parker lunchroom a pleasanter place for all the students, Mr. Henry Iaris initiated a new plan which has won the approval of both pupils and teachers. ln the past years, under our crowded conditions, students were often unable to find seats with their friends. There- fore they welcomed the suggestion that a group might sign for a table and be sure of having it. Mr. Iaris also instituted the plan of having a group of boys act as lunchroom aides each period. These lunchroom aides deserve a great deal of credit, for without their efforts our lunchroom could never have been kept in a ship-shape condition. They gave up part of their lunch period or a study period to help the various teachers in charge to maintain cleanliness. Cheerfully they asked everyone to keep tables and surroundings spic-and-span. One and all responded quickly to this project. At the present time our lunchroom is on the way to becoming the tidiest room in the school. Many thanks go to Mr laris who gave much time and energy to do this task and to the boys who Worked so diligently doing such a marvelous Job The head captain was Walter Suter under him were four chairmen lohn DePesa lan Lindenbaum Glen Bergmark and Charles Phelps Thanks are also given to the art classes for the pictures that were hung on the lunchroom Walls The pictures helped a great deal in making our lunchroom more cheerful lf it had not been for the support and co operation of every student We could never have succeeded in doing an excellent iob Row 3 B Calderwood R DePesa R Walker V Parker R Mynck E De W Williams D Hawkins N Ladas D Hemxchen M Hurst I Mikolalewski B Arenz C Peterson Mr H Iaris Rowl M Boos V Brown C Phelps I DePesa W Suter I Lmdenbaum G Bergmark E Nielsen R Henderson - f I f - I : . , . . . . . , . The band takes part in the annual Armistice Day parade in Englewood. ln this parade and at the lootball games the members prove that playing their instruments in harmony isnt the only skill they possess tor they are expert at marching and parade forma tions too Although Cap will lose seven members through Iune graduation we know that the band will keep up its good work CONCERT BAND Row 5 D Gronert M Robertson R Love W Fxnnery W Gromer A Gard V Parker A Ianuary C Smith C Brooks D Granklm D Speakman R Wellman Row 3 I Warner B Swoy P Insley E Wyatt B Robinson I Larson T Phillips C Guido I Penn Row 2 K Tanas M Gould Rowl Capt A H Hansen V Hansen M Tleger R Morelh ner, R..Gallaher, I:Scl1wappach,'R..Fischer, Godwin. ' '-1-f-ma.-.-fb g 'W -af-Q., Q lust when things looked darkest, Parker defeated South Shore l2-6. The defensive play was outstanding and more than made up for the lack of a scoring thrust. The Colonels began to march and swept Hyde Park off its feet 32-12. While an outstand- ing defensive unit held Hyde Park to l2 points, the offense came to life and, capitalizing on every mistake Hyde Park made, ran up its highest score of the season, 32 points. The Colonels were apparently getting warmed up for the important game of the year. This game was with our old traditional rival - Calumet. Effective offensive play, coupled with a surprisingly tough defense, left Calumet with their mouths hanging open. The Green and White broke through time and again to drop the Indians' backfield men before they could get the ball away, The game ended with the Parker fans screaming and jumping, for the Colonels had upset a strong Calumet team, 18-7. Eighteen members of the football team will be lost through graduation before the fall foot- ball season rolls around again. They are: Bill McHugh, Bruce DuClos, Tom Brown, Bob Miller, Byron Shinn, Nick Ladas, Martin Lorenz, Don Osting, Bob Neelis, Frank Fry, Iohn Chismar, Lynn King, Ken Iohnson, Ben Ewert, Ierry Martin, Clarence Williams, Charles Whitlock, and Russell McClellen. 4 pf PARKER! SWIMMING Parkers mermen did not have a suce cesstul l95l season, for the Seniors and the Iuniors won only one meet apiece, This seemingly mediocre record was due mainly to the tact that the pool was closed repeatedly because ot the coal shortage caused by the railroad strike. lt was hard to practice in an empty pool, and both squads tailed to overcome the handi- cap despite the capable ettorts ot their Coach, Mr. Pierce Van Auken. Even though they lost almost every meet, several ot the Senior lads piled up quite a record. Leading the squad was Iim Powers with a total ot titty-live points, Richard Iaguith was second with thirty- one, and Ralph Stephens took third place honors with twenty-six. The leading Iunior swimmers in- cluded Fred Barlow, who took tirst place with thirty-eight points, Ronald Palm second with thirtyftive, Iim McBride third with thirty-tour, and Bill Beck tourth with twenty. Six members ol the Senior squad will araduate in Iune. They are Richard Iaguith, Ierry Martin, Bob Neelis, Pat O'Neill, Iim Powers, and Reino Tuominen. Carrying on next year will be Richard Fussay, Richard l-luizenga, Bob Minninni, and Ralph Stephens. The Iunior roll included Fred Barlow, Bill Beck, Lowell Paxton, Iames McBride, Ronald Palm, Iames Terry, and Carl Haaser. We know that it the team gets a chance to practice next year, it will make a line showing with the help of Mr. Van- Auken.
