Secretary DON GRIFFITH .......,.... President PAUL BENNEWITZ .... Vice-President CAROL THOMPSO N ....... Treasurer ' February 1950 THE SENIORS On the first Monday of 1945 a group of bewildered little freshies sat in the auditorium awaiting directions, looking forward eagerly to their four exciting high school years. On Ianuary 25, l95U, the same class is seated in the same auditorium. Eighty-eight students have traveled the path through the four years together to emerge as one of the smallest but best classes to graduate from Parker High School. For all of us it was a long journey, but it was made easier by faithful guidance of our teachers and counselors. We found many activities to occupy our extra time. The boys looked to football and basketball, while the girls' thought turned to G.A.A., Green and White Squad, and Service Squad, Honor Soci- eties, Student Council, hall guard service, of- fice jobs, cheerleading, and clubs filled extra periods for students. While sitting, waiting for the presentation of diplomas, we seniors remember many glo- rious incidents of our high school career: dances, hayride parties, football games, the play, the variety show, and the proms. Perhaps we also reflect on the class we should not have cut, the F that could have been an S, the ser- vice award we might have won. But already the less happy memories are beginning to re- cede. We think of our friends among the faculty and the student body and realize what fine people they were. We have looked forward so eagerly to this day, but now-are we glad it has come? What will be next? In work or at college, our divi- sion teachers and sponsors will not be there to guide us over the rough spots. We shall be on our own from now on. Yes, we have needed their help, so, for their watchfulness and assistance, we wish to extend our heartiest thanks to all our sponsors and teachers and especially to our senior spon- sor, Mr. Oscar Ereidl, and our division teachers, Miss Lillian Schlesna, Captain Alfred Hansen, and Mr. Friedl, who helped us through our final year, and without whom some might never have made the grade. We have a special word of gratitude for Mr. Iohn I. Harmon, Assistant Principal, and Mr. Ioseph B. Shine, Principal, whom we shall always remember when we proudly say, Parker High School, Our Alma Mater. The plot of this comedy revolves about lim Blockman, who is involved in one money-making scheme after another, and Emily, who runs their home as a boarding house. Highly regarded for his fine performance was Donald Espinosa in the role of lim, while Emily was charmingly played by Dolores Mishler and Velma Smith. To add the necessary touch of youthful romance was Rose- mary, the teen-age daughter, superbly portrayed by Suzanne Casmere and Virginia Hansen. Harold and leffrey, the two suitors of Rosemary, one aggressive and the other shy,.were ably acted by Harvey Zoll and lohn Davidson. The cast made the boarders in the Blockman home vivid and interesting, Patricia Armstrong and Roberta Wilson gave splendid interpretations of the dominating mother of bashful leffrey, Miss Gilley was well acted by Patricia Edgar and Marsha Sebben, while Mr. Robinson was humorously por- trayed by Phil Spagnoli. The secret marriage of these two characters was a sensation of the play. Charles lohnson added humor to the scenes as old lake, the miner. lanet Harding and lrma Katzbeck at times stole the show as the eccentric Mrs. Lynch. Eugene Boyd added the necessary mystery as Mr. Willard, the traveling salesman. Much praise was given to Lalferne Geary and loanne Rice, who ably played the Blockmans' outspoken maid, and to the two youngsters who so delightfully played the roles of the two Blockman children. Character parts were well portrayed by Bill Van Hook as Clem, the trolley conductor, and Edwin Gins- berg in the role of Carlos, the Spanish neighbor. Leonard Newman, Florence Green and Doris Stonemark, and Mary Kosivas and Dolores Pappas cleverly developed the mother- in-law situation in the Kirby family. Frank Kogler turned in a finished part as the Reverend Mr. Wilson. Without the gracious and persevering directing of Miss Ruth Strahan, Chicken Every Sunday could not have been such a tremendous success. auf' QW 15. ' lp ..f.m-Q-'vw' 'LB' P' yr '9 '7-4 . President GERALDINE FALCONE .............. ,.,.............,..,..Vice-President DON CRAMER ..... Treasurer PHYLLIS REEVES ...' ff. se-cfefqfy THE SENIORS June 1950 The final chapter is completed. The book of our high school years took four years to com- pose, we ourselves were the characters, and our high school life, the plot. The first chapter was the hardest, for it was the beginning of an unknown adventure. We the freshies were ex- cited, but apprehensive. We felt grown up to be entering high school, yet we were easy prey for the sophomores who offered us free ele- vator passes. At the beginning of the second chapter, however, we were making the same offers to some very juvenile-looking freshmen. Then we turned our attention toward athletics and activ- ities. The third chapter found us moving to- ward leadership, not only on teams but in all school organizations. Our scholastic standing began to seem especially important. We began to think about plans for the future. Now we have reached the climax of our story. Time has passed so rapidly that we have become the men and women of tomorrow's generation. We are finishing this book and preparing to start the larger book of adult life. But now our thoughts are centered around the excitement of these busy days before the last page is written. The last chapters went with a rush. Com- mencement, which fills only an evening, has taken four years to achieve. For one of the few times during the past four years, we are sad. Life has been good to us, for it gave us few hardships and many days which we shall al- ways remember. Such a book as ours could not have been completed without the aid of the helpful and thoughtful division teachers, Miss Sara Abel- son, Miss Corinne Buland, Miss Amy Byrne, Mrs. Louise Eddy, Mrs. Mary Iacobsen, and Mr. Robert French, the management of Mr. Iohn I'Iarmon,' the supervision of Mrs. Mabel Rosen- thal, and the judgment of our principal, Mr. Ioseph B. Shine. All of us, the graduates of Iune, l95U, extend to them our deepest grati- tude for preparing us for the future. Whatever way we may go, on to college, into the busi- ness world, or into the services, we shall always remember Parker I-Iigh School, where we spent four of our happiest years. Miss Ruth Strahan as director used her patience and ability to bring the twenty-eight acts of the show into a well-rounded performance. Arnold Tatar did an exceptional job as master of ceremonies, and the huge cast of one hundred twenty-eight, the largest in any show at Parker, thrilled the crowded audiences. The band opened the show with a humorous rendition of Little Brown lug. Then a firemen's dance was given by the senior girls. A schoolroom scene, with Eleanor Wolfe as the teacher, saw lcha- bod Crane and Cinderella portrayed by Don Cramer and Marcia Booker. Pat Twomey and Bob Felton presented a take-off on quiz programs. loy Simpson and Madeline Wellman were the heroines of the western scene, Chuck Laskey and Bob Stege- man played some great accordian music. Marty Dickey and loan Beatty sang and did a comic dance. The minuet, waltz, and modern dance were shown, Dick and Slyvia Green performing the latest steps. Dick De Bolt then gave his splendid exhibi- tion of figure roller skating. The basketball boys caused a riot, as they looked for Chloe. An opera- tion was performed for us by Doctors Bob Menard and Bob Burson. The wrestling scene presented as fierce a tag team match as any seen over television. Grant and Vernon Donegan with Pat Edgar added a bit of horror to the show with their Frankenstein act. Ronald Beattie and Mickey Doyle proved they had excellent vocal talents. Maryette Goebel's amusing impersonations and the Four Vagabonds, Dan Ferrara, Tom Rigas, Paul Bennewitz, and lim Twomey, raised the roof. Some Shakespeare, a bal- let, chorus lines, and Chasteen and Chasteen, the daring acrobats, completed one of the best shows ever given at Parker. The year l949 saw the Parker eleven win- ning two games, losing three, and tying one in the league play. This spirited squad was under the able coaching ot Mr. Richard Frain and his excellent assistants, Mr. lerry Lewis and Mr. Harvey Taylor. ln the first sectional game the gridders fought hard and came from behind to knock ott Bowen l3 to 7. ln the next tilt the Colonels hit their stride and rolled over Harper 27 to U. Calumet proved too tricky, as they stopped our running attack and won, 20 to 7. The team held Fenger to only two points in the second halt but started too late, losing 35 to O. ln a night game Mr. Anton Antonides C a former Parker coachl and his Vocational team avenged their defeats ot past years by a victory of 2l to 7. We tinished the season with a very hard-fought contest with Morgan Park, as both teams went scoreless. Many graduating seniors will be missed in seasons to come. Among them were some ot the game captains appointed each week: center Henry Axmacher, fullback Pat Brady, whom the team voted most valuable player, Almost away On the loose I've got him end Ken Baker, guard Grant Donegan, and l-larry Budge, Who was selected All-Section tackle. Others who Will be gone are Vernon Done- gan, Dan Ferrara, lim Browne, Torn Lernler, lim and Pat Twoiney, Mike Mclkleenan, Bruce Clingernan, Bob Menard, Dick Sutton, lim Dig- nan, Phil Varnagis, Dick Green, Bon Nottelman, First and ten Bob Burson, Walter Barnes, and Eugene Boyd. Row 2: Bill Allen, Tom Braun, Vince Mount, Roy Luppert, Iim McDonough, Don Larsen. Under the fine leadership of Coach Eddie C'- Earrell, Parkers basketball teams have played top- notch ball for the last decade or so, and this year proved no exception. During the regular season the Lights had a 7-3 record for fourth-place honors in the South Section. Entering the city playoffs, they lost to a highly favored Marshall in a furious battle, 52-47. The Commandos eventually finished second in the City. Mr. O'Farrell relied on six regulars for most of the season. These six, George Rumel, lim Rissler, Mickey Doyle, Pat Brady, Clarence Rosengren, and Eddie O'Farrell, Ir., are all seniors and will not be back next year. The team lost Don Griffith and Don Spore at mid-year. Coach O'Farrell considers this team one of his best, These boys were all gentle- men and always had good sportsmanship, they tried their best Whether Winning or losing. Returning lettermen Who Will carry on our Winning traditions are Vince Mount, Roy Luppert, Tom Braun, lim Mc- Donough, Bill Allen, and Ron Zemke. The heavies ended the season with a respectable 5-5 won-lost record in league play, and barely missed a playoff berth. Our Seniors lost four close games and with a few breaks would have been outstanding. Graduating heavies are Al Fitch, Phil Varnagis, lim McCullurn, Tom Fitzgerald, and Ronald Nottel- man.
