Our purpose in creating this book was twofold. First, if we have achieved our goal, the Pine will furnish outsiders with a fairly accurate idea of activities, sports, social life, and classes at Parker. Secondly, we hope it will stand as a record for the past year for students of Parker and afford a lasting symbol for the '37 graduates. Roulam' I. In her we have found not only a person who embodies the ideals of the students but who commands the respect of pupils and faculty alike. To Miss Quinn was entrusted the task of presenting participation in school affairs to the students, and keeping alive the school spirit. We feel it is a great privilege to be under the supervision of so capable a di- rector and hope she may long continue her good work at Parker. ffj I fi 1 I f I Pugr 6 '- Q4 vw. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Miss Agnes O'Connell took over the post of assistant principal, February,- 1936. Due to the tremendous expansion of Parker High School in the last few years her duties have been heavy. She has, however, distinguishd herself by the good judgement and precision in her work. Miss O'Connell is not a newcomer by any means, for she has been with us for nine years distinguishing herself in the commercial and deaf oral depart- ments. To all who know her, Miss Q'Conr1ell is a genial person with a high sense of humor. This quality, plus her ability, ha smade her genuinely liked through- out the school. AGNES OlCONNEl-I. Yonder stands the great shining hull of the Kitzelman Clipper poised on the runway for its dash to Croyden, fifteen hours away. Here we are about to realize our 1ife's ambition-traveling around the world! But what is that confusion to our right? It's a duel! Upon inquir- ing, we find that it is a publicity stunt of the Sharpe Sword Company. Strange as it may seem the fencers are the famed Betty Barrett and Dorothy Moriarity team. With a start we remember the plane takes off in five minutes. After boarding the plane and upon the realization of impending relaxation, our pudgy travel companion bursts forth in a tirade of words. To quiet him, we give him a copy of the world's worst seller Things Distant, which was written through the combined efforts of Gertrude Paine and Edna Olson. Glancing at the adds of a newspaper, we see the indorsement of Dondlinger's Dyspepsia Pills by the exotic Shakespearean actress, Maria-note the change-Sleezer, and the matinee idol, Wilbur Klint. Invited by two air hostesses, Katherine Hoff and Clara Louise Fowler, the passengers take a tour of their gigantic three hundred passenger superliner. The friendliness of the crew leads us to call them by their names which are printed on their caps. John Waterman, George Kalantzopoulos, Richard Mullins, Ed Soenen, and Carl Stammerjohn compose the navigation crew. As we continue our tour, we visit the galley, where the head cook, Dorothy Gawne, is strewing stirring, mixing and messing her fa- mous dishes. Her staff consists of Anna King, Virginia Morton, and Lorraine Bernhardt. Cliff Sherry, Harry Bigelow, and Warren Giest are the dish wash- ers. While dining, we notice the zest with which the famous and graceful male tap ballet of Charles W. Brown and Earl Williams, devour their food. This ballet includes Tony Gagliano, Staney Pusko, Jack Jefferson, Harvey Feeley, and Al Erikson. Our ship, arriving at our destination, glides to a per- fect landing in the English Channel. From there we proceed to the Haag Hotel in London. While in this city, we go to the Smith, Brown, and White circus featuring the astonishing acrobat, Tally Andrew. Moving on, we notice that peanuts, popcorn, cracker-jack, are being sold by Eldene Perrin. One of the most outstanding side shows is that featuring Little Egypt II, in private life, Frances Pahnke. While talking to an elephant keeper, we discover that he also is a Parker graduate of June '37, and none other than Dick Stitt, the peanut chiseler. We next go to the Him- mel Hoax House, and also to see the India Rubber Man, Bill Hughes. Another thrill is witnessing the lion train team, Didlock and Gallagher, in action. After a few days in London, we leave on the S.S. Styx for Paris. While in Paris we become acquainted with the Surrealist painter, Elmer Ratzel. We even were so fortunate as to get a glimpse of the Count and Countess of Fontaine. Our next stop is at Vienna, where we visit the music festival. Swineford, the mad musician, plays Christofilos's Cantique in Z Minor, and Carner's Scherzando in X Flat. As a lighter form of recreation we motor out to the Alps where we witness some fancy skiing. With a waving of arms and feet, Anna Mae Harvey comes hurtling down the mountainside only to collide in midair with Sidney Davies. The usual greeting of Fancy meeting you here, is exchanged as each continues to bump down the hill. Paga'4I Leaving beautiful Austria we travel by rail to Italy to see the chariot races. On the train we meet that indispensable public servant, Al Forrest, the Fuller Brush man. On our arrival in Rome we happen to hear Bill Thoreson, the Italian Huey Long, make a campaign speech for reelection. In a cab driven by Nick Ernest, we taxi to the new arena where we are to witness the chariot races. Rasmussen and Rowe, the rolling ramblers, head the list of chariot racers. Another well-known team is Gronholm and Gregory, the gregarious gallopers. Glancing around us we notice Betty Jensen, Harold Housekeeper, Cathleen Conant, Richard Weitzenfeld, and Marion Wigby, all of whom we remember from our high school days at Parker. Aboard the yacht of George Markland, the philosopher, we proceed to Egypt as his guests. Lazily floating up the Nile, we pass through the region of the Pyramids. Not far from the banks we notice three disillusioned diggers- johnson, Anderson, and Cade--digging their way from fame. Our next stop is Shanghai, China, where we visit the greater 1952 Olympics, which are already in progress. Rachel Natharius, an American representative, wins the pole vaulting event from Ida Meyers by at least a foot. The gallop- ing grasshopper from Guatemala, the best decathloner in the World, Dick Francis, puts on an exhibition between events. The forty yard broad jump event is won by Ernest Wilkins over Henry Zeh. Among the American par- ticipants in the hop, step, and jump relay are five graduates of Parker, Tom O'Rourke, James Brown, Russell Drantz, Robert Jameson, and Bob Markovitz. The main event of the day is about to begin-the twenty-five mile dash. Who will win, the Chicago Comet, Chaparas, or the Masked Marathoner, McMinn? just as they break the tape, a cloud of smoke arises from the judges' box as a result of a heated debate over the decision. This spontaneous combustion oc- curs from the judges, Schneider, Woodard, and Wortendyke. For a moment it looks as if the Olympic games are to end in a brawl. Down in the midlst of the bedlam are the newshawks, Nachtrieb, Nadler, and Nees, from the Nit- wit News. As our allotted time in Shanghai is almost up, we take leave of the Olympics at this crucial moment. Safely aboard the S.S. Obecunas for the States, we are invited to the floorshow as guests of Captain Mioduski. As we enter the dining room, the floor show is already started. Tobola and Walling- ford, the well-known waddling waltzers have the spot light. At the finish of their act we are to have the pleasure of hearing Virginia Mills, the song bird from Singapore, on her initial public appearance. Just as she is about to break into that latest song hit, Ode to Moulton-Two Bits, the boat gives a sudden lurch and lists heavily to port. Tragedy threatens in the form of a shipwreck. We are safely removed to the U.S.S. Stevens in a rescue boat manned by Vonesh, Virtue, and Vander Ploeg, middies whom we recognize as graduates of Parker's class of june '3 7. The battleship carries us to San Francisco. Due to our financial status, we hitch-hike back to Chicago. Passing through Hicksburg, we stop at Hothersall's Hamburger Hut to get a bite to eat. To our surprise, Doris Lehman is the waitress. Doris tells us that John Clark and Ed Dougherty have risen to the high positions of supervisors of secondary edu- cation to the Pineville mice. As we lie resting our weary torsos before proceed- ing to Chicago, we talk of our days at Parker. Page 42 C ASSES fa WS ii PQ4 CLASS OF FEBRUARY 1938 The members of the 4B class participated in many worthwhile scholastic activities. Many 4B's took an active part in the S.P.S.C.O. Doris Daniels was the speaker of the house: Betty Skinner held the position of secretary of clubs, and Doraine Morgan was a member of Betty's committee. Members of the general assembly included Evelyn Anderson, Ruth Grund, Frank Gustine, Jean White, Doris Daniels, Arthur Ruling, Jackie Hart, and Mary Louise Scanlon. Robert Stegner and Robert Neuhaus were on the publicity committee for social affairs, and Spencer Dunn was a member of the bulletin board commit- tee. Bettie Kleinke, Mary Louise Scanlon, and Ellie Hrones were in charge of the kitchenette. Edgar Kranz and Russell Kemp were hosts in the Community Room, and Robert Wilson had charge of tickets for athletic events. The 4B G.A.A. lettergirls were Eloise Proctor, Zoe Acker, and Dorothy Lust. Robert Wilson and Frank Gustine starred in basketball while on the base- ball nine were found John Manning, Edward Loucius, Robert Lilien, and Edgar Kranz. Arthur Ruling and Robert Stegner were on the track team, and Roger Nichols held the position of manager of the fencing team. One has only to study the achievements of this class to be assured that they are a fine group of young people. In scholarship, athletics, and all school activities, the junior class has a made a lasting contribution to their school. The recent class organization has proved very successful. In the january election, the winning candidates were as follows: William Nugent, president, Beverly White, vice president, Norman Graff, secretary, and Hyman Pitt, treasurer. The main social event sponsored by this newly organized class was the junior prom held in May. Mary Lu Price and Harry Potter, co-chairmen of social activities, were in charge of the dance. The Owls had eighty-seven junior members. Dorothy Laskey had the privi- lege of being secretary of this honor society. Prominent members were Jean Baldwin, Arthur Hoover, Robert Lavidge, Catherine Lichenstien, Ardie Moli- tor, Claude Bakas, Barbara Mills, Elmer Melnick, Betty Whinnery, Marion Seidler, Hyman Pitt, Ruth Stammerjohn, Norman Graff, Elizabeth Schaller, Josephine Dominici, Betty-Jane Nelson, Angelo Geocaris, and Virginia Johnson. The junior swimmers led by Captain Roy Steers, Phillip Terry, and Alfred Hume made a fine showing. Those on the senior splash team were Leonard Hurry, Harry Johnson, George Dewey, and Warren Fierke. The captain of the skating team was Arthur Lavidge. Skating with him from the junior class was Fred Cox. The track team was fortunate in having Bob Kircher, Sidney Gold, and Arthur Saunders as three of its members. The girls organized an all star volley ball team this year. Members of the class in the editorial department of the Parker Press were June Lindblom, Harriette Stokes, and Arnold Kohn. Helen Penhallegon and Robert Kipp served in the business, department. Many pupils have been active in student government organized last fall. Members of the high council were Harriette Stokes and Angelo Geocaris. Robert Page and Helen Harsh were SB members. Robert Gallivan served on the cabinet as Secretary of Health, Safety, and Sanitation. There have been several members of the class represented in the orchestra, namely: Rudolph Ardelean, Gail Fowler, and Marilyn Melbourne. Page 46 Pugr 4 V4 Ihlgv 4-1 SOPHOMORE June, 1937, and the classes of June '39 and February '40 have passed their second milestone! This was the first class to lay a foundation for a well formed sophomore organization. This newly formed body made way for the sophomore dance, one of the highlights of the semester, and eagerly took part in Parker'sl newf system of government, Student Participation in School Control Organization. It was with great succes that the president, Herbert Leavitt, and vice presi- dent, Eleanor Hoffman, guided this class in their activities. Much of this ac- complishment Was due to their cabinet consisting of Dolores and Fred Goodman, social co-secretaries, Peggy O'Neil and Norman Jantz, scholastic co-secretaries, Gladys Johnson and Russel Olson, financial co-secretaries, Dora McAllister, secretary to the president, Sheldon Dray, in charge of Law and Order, and Gene Hoover, Sergeant at Arms. The secretaries of publicity were Leonard Abrams, Norbert Duckette, Norma Keir, Robert Pearlman, and Bob Rovick. The almost unbelievable feat of obtaining S's in all majors was accomplished last February by Ruth Browsky, Norman Jantz, Judy Kerman, and Marion Storkes. Others with slightly lower averages, and yet very excellent ones were Katherine Ahern, Harriet Balaskis, Hilvie Benson, Muriel Essinger, Frances Everaert, Mary Grezna, Elaine Henders, Ruth Henderson, Eleanor Hoffman, William Johnson, Florence Kraft, Lewis McDonald, Arvilla Nichols, Anne Passefiume, Jeanette Plotkin, and Eloise Witt. Edward Frederickson, Eleanor Hoffman, Norman Jantz, and Peggy O'Neil represented the sophomores on the Owl executive board. Athletics? This is no longer a question as far as the sophomores are con- cerned. Our football heros, Frank Grabo and Warren Moore, earned their minor letters. The three sophomores receivingswimming letters were Al Russel, Jack Sluis, and Myron Snapp. Johnnie Jorgenson earned his letter in tennis and Sheldon Dray received his for cheer-leading, thus completing the list of sopho- more lettermen. The answer to the question of athletics can also be found in the Girls' Athletic Association. Vivian Eddleman, Frances Everaert, Helen Galanapolis, Vera Gawne, Ruth Henderson, Lois Johnson, Dorothy Kester, Jean Cosmos, Dorothy Lust, Anna Jo McDonald, Fay Mezilson, Jeanette Plotkin, Rose Marie Sarra, Mary Walsh, and Patricia Young Were prominent sophomore lettergirls in the G.A.A. Sophomores were represented in every corner of Parker High, even in that far, far corner of the fourth floor, the band room. Here, Walter Jones and Vance Tuttle earned their letters. Others of importance were Gene Hoover, businss manager, Gilbert Witzel, property manager, and Charles Peterson, as- sistant librarian. The business staff of the Parker Press was not Without its sophomore repre- sentatives. Marjorie Lauritzen, Arvilla Nichols, and Edward Fredrickson served in this department. Page S0 4 v , v 1 AUTOGRAPHS THE FRESHMAN PAGE It requires a considerable stretch of imagination to associate a freshman with a senior, yet within four shortiyears some of our freshmen will control the leading activities of our school. Consider the already prominent freshmen who have been chosen to repre- sent our freshman class in the General Assembly. The delegation of fresh- men include: Raymond Wiltmere, La Verne Leeney, John Dunn, Charles Heil- man, John McCauley, Jack Speralses, Dorothy Govan, George Peterson, Gra- ham Reese, Ida Jiampa, Joanne Farrell, George Dunn, Betty Winters, Eleanor Wilson, Roy Roberts, and Charles Holmes. Others were Raymond Knighton, Dolores Goodman, Patricia Goroninger, Shervin Freed, Jack Owens, Charles Huber, Mark Duffy, Phyllis Acker, William Walther, Edna May Larson, Peggy Chopp, Robert Doig, Margret Bina, Adrian Spaargarden, Tom Pappas, and Clarence Hansen. Y The most important event'on the freshman calendar was the election of class offiicers. Barbara Price and Marjorie Houseman were elected to the offices of president and vice president. A cabinet consisting of seven members was appointed. Secretary of Social Activities was Jane Manor, Secretary of Publicity, Lois Lindbladg Alexander MacKenzie, William Minor, and Harold Himmel were appointed to head the various freshmen committees throughout the semester. Secretary of Scholastic Recognition was Lillian Levin, while Robert Stuckey was chosen to take charge of athletic activities. In athletics, as in every other department, the school looks toward the fresh- man class for material. Robert Stuckey and Eugene Withrow will probably grace the first team in basketball. The eleven will undoubtedly have on the line two such huskies as Alex MacKenzie and Bill Minor. James Costello, Wil- liam Laskey, Morris Epply, Donald Christensen, and Richard Dahlquist are try- ing out for the Parker splash team. Talent is ever present. This is-true of the freshman class. Fifty freshmen are expressing themselves in music. The band has claimed thirty-one of our number. The orchestra has been an attraction to fifteen freshmen. The A Capella choir has -set high standards but Barbara Exter, Anna Chiaeppitti, Dorothy Ralston, Marie Slokom, and Lorraine Johnson have proven themselves capable of meeting them. Sixty freshmen have made the E average requirement of the honor soci- ety and have become Owls. The Student Participation in School Control Organization has sponsored many clubs. Under the supervision of the secretaries of clubs, Elmer Melnick and Betty Skinner, the club schedules were established. The freshman member- ship proves that this class has taken advantage of the wonderful opportunities offered. A constitution was drawn up by a committee headed by Marge Rasmussen. Students desiring to become candi- dates for office were required to present a petition bearing one hundred names and conform with all eligibility rules. In the first election held in November, 1936, Arnold Hinkens was elected president and Doris Daniels became vice president. President Hinkens' cabinet consisted of the following students who were chosen for their leadership abili- ties and interest in civic affairs. Richard Weitzenield was appointed secretary of Health, Safety, and Sanitation. Social affairs were placed in the hands of Doris Wigger, and Geraldine Tobola was made head of Art Interpretations. The responsibility of sound and stage equipment was given to Al Lengyelg Elmer Melnick became Secretary of Clubs, and Art Himmel was Secretary of Rules and Order. As Secretary of Scholarship and Civic Awards, Louise Carson rendered meritorious service to the school, William Thoreson was placed in charge of publicity, and Fred Sherman was appointed secretary of Athletics. Using our national government as a model the constitution provided for legislative and judiciary departments, called the General Assembly and High Council. The student representatives are elected from each division and are enlikened to our national senators. The High Council acts in advisory and ju- diciary capacities in matters of constitutionality. It consists of sixeen members elected from the General Assembly and having four members from each year, two from each semester. Arnold Hinkens and his staff of officers laid the foun- dations for this representative government. In January, 1937, the student body elected Harry Bigelow, president, and Frances Pahnke, vice president, for the ensuing half year. They were sworn into office in the inaugural ceremonies of February when President Bigelow, introduced his new cabinet ofiicers, and with the cooperation of the students and faculty, launched into an active and constructive student partici- pation program. Richard Mullins, Secretary of Athletics, established new records with the greatest attendance at games in Parker's history, Betty Skinner, Secretary of Clubs, organized several new clubs and aided those already organized in increas- ing their membership by extensive recognition of the clubs. Under Marge Rasmussen, Secretary of Rules and Order, the cleanliness of the school has been of a high standard, with a newly organized clean-up system. A complete rec- ord of the extra-curriculum activities of Parker students and programs of every student in the school was compiled by Carl Stammerjohn, Secretary of Civic Hwards and Scholarships. Weekly dances and social affairs were under the arrangement of Geraldine Tobola, Secretary of Social Affairs, and Carl Johnson was secretary of the department of Stage and Sound. Membership in the organization is open to all stu- dents who attain the semester average of excellent. Under the sponsorship of Miss Matilda Gibson, faculty adviser, the group has become one of the largest and most active clubs in the school. Aiming at high scholarship combined with social activities to make a well balanced diet of school life the Owls give open dances in the gym and teas and parties for the faculty and visiting students. While the school was testing student administration, the activities of the honor society were curtailed in order to co-operate with the S.P.S.C.O. pro- gram. A new alumni association for Gold Pin Owls was founded under Louise Carson's administration. With the opening of the new semester a party for Owls was given in the gym. The informal entertainment was added to by gay multi-colored balloons, and a community sing. Delayed by the absence of Miss Gibson, the first meeting for the election of new oHicers did not take place until the third week of March. Nick Ernest assisted by Helen Bickett, Rachael Natharius, Merry Sleezer, and Dan Daniels conducted the election. Several Weeks later, at the first meeting of the execu- tive board, the general calendar for the term was planned. The Owls sponsored the weekly dance May 14. Spring was the theme of the social. A tea for the faculty was given Thursday, May 6, in the Commu- nity Room. The social committee under the chairmanship of Shirley Kitzel- man and Merry Sleezer arranged a buffet luncheon. Unlike graduating students, however, it will continue its work in Parker and will endeavor to maintain and increase the school spirit and inform the students of the activities of their classmates. ln recognition of its merit, the paper received a grading of excellent in its division at the I956 spring judging of the National Scholastic Press Associ- ation. lirom September to February, Anna Mae Harvey acted as editor-in-chief of the publication. Bill Thoreson served as her co-editor until November. George Marlxland Hlled the position of editor-in-chief from February to June. The first page, which is the news section, was in charge of George Mark- land during the first semester and of Leonard Mayer and June Lindholm from February to june. The second page, containing a column by the principal, edi- torials, humor, and features, was edited by Marge Bowlsby during the first Ililxt' Ii X half of the year, and Florence Dresser, the latter half. Barbara Carner and Shirley Kitzelman took care of the third page from September to February and Edith Davis and Jeanette Gilbert had charge from February to June. This page contains club news, special departments, feature stories, and miscellane- ous news articles. The fourth page, containing information concerning athletic activities in the school, was edited by Charles Brown and Leonard Mayer dur- ing the first semester, and by Claude Bakas and Eloise Proctor during the sec- ond semester. Miss Amy L. Mackie has been the very capable faculty adviser who has had the none too easy task of supervising the workers. The editorial staff writes the paper, but without a business department there would be no publication. Pearl Carr served as business manager from Septem- ber to June and was succeeded by Doris Daniels, who held the position dur- ing the second semester. Robert Kopp was in charge of the advertising depart- ment for the two terms, while Maxine Ecklebarger was circulation manager during the first half of the year, and Helen Penhallegon the second half. Mr. john McMahon served as faculty adviser from September to March. Mrs.. Muriel Allen occupied the position for the remainder of the year. LIBRARY Of great interest to all vistors and students is the spacious library with its collection of books. Mrs. Dawson has been in charge of the library for several years and through her efforts the contents of the shelves have been enlarged. Assisted by many students in their free periods Mrs. Dawson organized the duties of the library helpers in order to' regulate the work. The assistants were assigned special duties or posts. Some of these tasks were the collecting of study hall slips, serving at the reference deskg watching the doors to see that no texts are brought in or unchecked books removed, and to keep order in the library. Open from the first through the twelfth period every school day the book shelves and study tables were welcome to use by the students in their free periods. Among the assistants who gave efficient service for the past semester are Clara Kunzler, Jean Koopman, Helen Tecotsky, and Glerice Ockes. DEBATING CLUB Argue! Dispute! Deliberate! Speak your mind! Such were the battle cries of the newly established Debating club under the capable sponsorship of Mr. Edward Punke. The students turned out full force in answer to its call, thus proving the interest of the student body in debating. The members heatedly argued the pros and cons of such topics as resolved: Homework should be made compulsory, resolved: It is satisfactory to add new members to the Supreme Courtg and resolved: Compulsory dancing in the gym- nasium is advisable. The aim of the officers and members has been to combine scientific study of nature and social events into a well balanced club calendar. With this view in mind a trip was made to the White Pine State Park last fall for an outing which proved highly bene- ficial to the botany and the Zoology students. Because of interest in the en- larged collection of fossils, a tour was made thru the Oriental Museum on the campus of the University of Chicago, after which the group listened to a lec- ture. DALTONIAN CLUB Last semester through the efforts of enthusiastic members of the chemistry classes, and under the supervision of Mr. John Coulson, the Daltonian Club was organized. The purpose of this association is to convey a better understanding of chemistry to its members, and to interest others in chemistry. In January, the club collaborated with the chemistry and physics depart- ments in arranging tours of the Bowman and Borden dairies, and a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Jackson Park. At their meetings, which are held every two weeks in the Community Room, students deliver talks they have prepared on subjects that bear on chemistry. Among those who spoke were Frances Pahnke, who told of the life of Madame Curie, the discoverer of radium, and Irving Johnson, who delivered a discourse on explosives. The Daltonian Club maintains remedial classes for those students who are behind in their work, providing them with tutors, as Well as ample discussion periods. Under the direction of the club, the chemistry laboratory was thrown open to lower classmen for their inspection in the hope that they would take an active interest in chemistry. THE EUCLIDEAN CLUB The Euclidean Club was organized with five purposes: to promote general interest in mathematicsg to demonstrate its practical applications, to maintain a mathematical laboratory, to render assistance to pupils in algebra and geom- etryg and to bring to Parker leaders and authorities to speak on subjects re- lated to mathematics. Among the speakers who appeared before the Euclidean club last semester were Professor Penn of Armour Institute, who told of the part that mathe- matics plays in surveying, and Marx Holt, principal of the Fiske School, who exhibited' various applications of mathematics. The mathematical laboratory is an interesting place. It has many charts, diagrams, drawings, and working models. It is the ambition of the members of the club that every student visit the laboratory frequently to get an appre- ciation of the place that math has in the world outside the class room. THE ORCHESTRA For operettas, musical revues, band shows, social dances, assemblies, and for practically every other activity that takes places at our school, the orchestra lends a helping hand, thus making it one of the most important organizations in Parker High School. THE BAND One of the outstanding organizations and a valuable asset to the school is the Parker Concert band. Playing at school assemblies is only one of the band's activities. The parents of the band members, composing the organization known as Band and Orches- tra Sponsors, have often been entertained at the Hamilton Park Fieldhouse. The band gave two student concerts, which were held in the auditorium November S, and December 10. The group also played for the students of the Yale school. The officers of the band for the past year include Elmer Ratzel, president, Betty Barrett, vice president: and Florence Kraft, secretary. Eugene Tittering- ton served as librarian and Charles Peterson as his assistant. The only member of the band to enter the city solo contest this year waq john Cress, trombone player, who won first place, therefore making him eligi- ble for the national contest held in May. gl The band deserves a great deal of credit for its remarkable work, and for its participation in school affairs. With the exception of George Nash, the entire team was composed of new players and with substitutes of the previous year. Therefore, double credit is due this squad. The lineup for the majority of the games and also for the final one was: Rob- ert Kircher, LE.: George Nash, L.T., Qco-captainjg Ray Jasper, L.G.g Robert Neuhouse, C.g Sidney Gold, R.G.q Stanley Pusko, R.T.g Warren Spence, R.E.g Charles jones, L.H.g Wallace Ottomeyer, Q.B., fco-captainjg Frank Grabo, R.I-I., and Ed Dougherty, F.B. The first victory was acclaimed in the Calumet tilt. Jones, fullback for Parker, after the usual feeling out the players indulge in before settling down to work, scored the only six point score of the game. I p g y a--.,,r., we i, Page X6 A plunge around left end was the touchdown play. Calumet, taking advan- tage of a low pass from the Parker center downed the ball for a touchdown and two points. Neither side scored during the remainder of the game. Throughout the entire season the team was very well supported. The ma- jority of the battles were fought under the eyes and cheers of several thousand students. All the games in which Parker participated were played at White City or Shewbridge Field. On the week following the Morgan Park defeat the gridders were visited by Lady Luck in the form of an 18-6 victory over the Harper crew. The Green and NWhite line performed in true All American style, moving down the field in a series of drives, which more than satisfied the Parker rooters. Fol- lowing a twenty three yard run play, Jones again carried the oval to authorize a touchdown. The main calamity of the season was known as the Fenger game. By this game lfenger was established as the holder of South section laurels. Page 37 BASEBALL TEAM Graduation losses fell upon the baseball team of 1936 with a heavier-than- usual bang. Edward Soenen, captain, Frank Grabo, and Edward Lucius, were the only regular members left on the squad after graduation had taken its roll. Coach Holmes, with the aid of Captain Soenen, undertook the job of sort- ing out the players for the season, and after several months of labor succeeded in presenting the school with a brand new baseball team. Among those chosen were: Edward Soenen, captain, Richard Mullins, Frank Grabo, Edward Krantz, and Edward Lucious. Others who wore the Green and White uniform during the past season are Frank Calvert, Charles Reid, Wil- liam Minnella, Sam O'Neil, Gregory Schultz, and Fred Sherman. Frank Gustine, regular last year and high point man for the cage team, ac- cepted a proposal to train with the Pittsburgh Pirates, thus leaving empty a large pair of shoes. The Parker lineup for the beginning tilt with Tilden, April 9, and for the majority of the games was: Robert Kirscher, P., Edward Soenen, C., Frank Grabo, IB., Edward Krantz, 2B.g Richard Mullins, SS.g Edward Lucious, 3B.g Robert Hansen, LF., Robert Black, CF., and Frank Ehrig, RF. Tl-IAM TRACK TEAM SENIOR BASKETBALL TEAM Following in the footsteps of Parker's football team come the basketball squad. Tutored by Coach Andrew O'Farrell, the cage team netted fourrl' place as a result of four wins and four losses. Following the third game of the season Frank Gustine was leadirr in th' high point race, having made a total of 10 baskets or 20 points. The Parker-Harper tilt put Harper in second place with Englewood. Cal held first place. The basket season ended with Parker outplaying Hyde Park to the total of 33 to 25. The regulars were Ray Dondlinger, captain, Frank Gustine, who rang up a record of 103 points for the season, Charles Waggenbergg Ray Carpenter, and Owen Gill. LIGHTWEIGHT BASKETBALL Although winning only three of their eight games, the Parker lightweights scored a total of 189 points to the opponents, 164 units. Their greatest defeat was administered by Hirsch in an overtime contest, 28-20. In the Hirsch game the lights suffered their third, and the season's Worst, de- feat in the Maroon's gym, 28-20. Englewood handed Parker their fourth defeat as the fast purple squad won 26-24 in the enemy's gym. Co-captains Andrew Jones, and Wilson shared the honors in this tilt. In sectional play the regular lineup was as follows: Clark and Jones, for- wards, Andrews and Sullivan, guards, and Wilson, center. Clark and Andrews shared the captaincy. TRACK Although its ranks were weakened by graduation and inelegibilities, Parker's track team coached by Mr. N. Wasserman, has a very promising future. The returning men from last year's teams were Bob Kircher, high jumpg James Parker, milerg Fred Eda and Sid Gold, shot putters, Don McCartney, 220 and 100 yard sprintsg and Don Osborne, miler. The harriers entered the city indoor meet held at Chicago University, and Bob Kircher won first place in the senior high jump. James Parker, senior captain, and Dan Osborne, junior captain, qualified in their events but were eliminated in the finals.
