I FOREWORD i Xfgjcugtj The Staff 'of the 1928 Parker Annual, in presenting this yearbook to the Parents, Faculty and Friends, to Students and Alumni, trusts that they may find within these pages a true record of the activities of the school. If, in this aim alone the Staff has succeeded, it will feel itself justly and amply rewarded for its efforts. V XM jpg-,dl But in addition to presenting the activities of the school, the Staff has endfzavored to glorify Chicago- the great, the beautiful, the progressive. This it has done fhfqugh, the use of aerial photographs which appear in the view section. The Staif trusts the readers will find these interesting and hopes that these photos merit more than a passing glance. l wwf rf?-f i t f fauna! 4 N110 dk'-A7a1 ff ' ' ' ' 4. . f. ff f,4f-aft I . RALPH FOWLER HISTORY OF Tl-IE. CLASS OF FEBRUARY, l928 The class of February, 1928, entered Parker in February 1924, It was put under the leadership of Miss Jane Deming, who, since then, has been transferred to Hyde Park. It was only natural that this class should feel strange and much lost in its new home of education. However, it chose Dan F erner as class presi- dent, and soon this feeling of strangeness wore away and the members of the class became a part of their surrounding, besides making many new friends. A year passed and the February students were no longer freshmen. As their leaders, they chose Bob iO'Leary, president, john Detrich, vice-president, Llew Abbott, secretary, and Anna May Richardson, treasurer. The class was now under the leadership of Mr. Henry S. Peacock, who still lingers in the memory of Parkerites. They loyally supported all the school publications, athletics, and other organizations. As juniors this class distinguished itself both scholastically and socially. Now they had reached the height of their ambition-they were seniors! As 4B's they chose Carroll Gebhardt, john Nichols, Annie Aasen, and Roger Currier as class officers. They had participated in almost every athletic endeavor due to the excellence of Jack Creswell, Ralph Fowler, and John Nichols on the basketball team. Mary Stringer also showed her splendid ability in swimming. Randall Ahern and Earl Kubicek were officers in the R. O. T. C. and later awarded medals. Then came their last semester for reveling under the jurisdiction of their Alma Mater. Their leaders were all well known: jack Creswell, Mary Stringer, Annie Aasen, and Ralph Fowler. During this year they also had several members on the Annual and the Green and IfV1zite staffs. HOWARD TNWOOD DAVID KENISTON HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF JUNE, l928 The class of june, 1928, entered Parker in September, 1924 and holds the distinction of being the last freshman class to exist at Parker. One bright morning about two hundred newly-arrived pupils were sent up to the College study hall and were there given instructions as to how to arrange programs b-y several teachers. Early in the life of this class a scare arose. It was thought that possibly the freshmen might have to attend classes in the building occupied by the Kershaw Grammar school. For the time being, pending the outcome of the crowded condi- tion which caused this class to be called the Kershaw group, classes were held in the College building from 3 p. m. to 6 p. m. In a few weeks conditions were remedied through the work of Dr. XVilliam B. Owen, late president of the Chicago Normal Collegeg Mr. Sheppard, vice president, Mr. Perrine, Parker principal at the time, Mr. Smith, assistant principal, and members of the College and high school faculties. Satisfactory sChedules were finally arranged to accommodate the freshman class. During the first year, under the leadership of Dorothy Gard, VVilliam Gray, and Myrtle Gregg, the class prospered socially and scholastically. In the second year the class continued to keep up its record in scholarship and activities. Several members of the class took part in the operetta, The Fire Prince. Several students showed their outstanding ability in various lines and may be taken as representative of the group. These were: Frank Hynes, Donald Mulvihill, Kathryn Rinehart, Nan Creswell, and Vivian Dixon. The other sections of this book are devoted to a record of activities in the senior semesters. The results of the work of the team this year were two victories, three defeats and two tie games. This team lost the first practice game to St. Rita by a 12-0 score and tied Hyde Park in the second 0-0. Two weeks later the first league game of the season was played against Calumet, which resulted in :mother tie. F enger was easily defeated the following week by a score of 34-0. The next Saturday the chances for another championship were lost when Morgan Park Won a hard-fought battle I4-13. In the last game of the season VVendell Phillips defeated Parker by a score of 6-0. The team played its last game against Aquinas High School on Friday, November 18, and won I2-O. The team was built up around Captain Robert O'Leary, Stanley Saluski, VVil1iam Short, Robert Groenier and George Mahoney, all of last year's team. Because of graduation, Parker will lose Captain O'Leary, who did clever Work as quarterback, and VVilliam Short, who did fine offensive work in the backfield. Off the linemen who will be graduated are Robert Groenier, the center, who will leave a vacancy in the line which will be hard to Fill, and Everett Ramsay, who payed well in spite of injuries. Jack Snyder, the understudy of O, 4 . , v . Leary, Edwin Becker and Jack MacLennan, other backfield men, will also be graduated. The prospects for next year are very bright because many of the boys will return. Captain Stanley Saluski, who will be playing his third year, will fill one of the backfield positions. Louis Egner and George Mahoney, backs, Gregor, Bohart and Ed Mahoney, ends, and Steel, VVilliamson, Goebel, I-Iazekamp, Raych and Levy, linemen, will return. l7Il ll H ,. 1928 Uhr Harker Annual 1525 . w ' 'ff-lmisof uf.-.1 - - SCXICEIQ The soccer team at Parker this year was one of the best we had in a number of years. Although the boys didn't win any games, they tied two and lost the others by very close scores. The boys who played on the regular team were Captain Lewis Schuman, Vlfalter Ferngren, Ray Kaczkowski, Robert Nebel, George Shatlner and Jack Owen of last season's team, and Harry Bryant, Richard Hill, Robert Murray, Albert Long, David Keniston and Paul Colby, new players. The season began with a practice game against Hyde Park, which resulted in a 7-o victory for Parker's opponents. On October I4 the league games started. The team played Harrison then, and again two weeks later, both games resulting in I-0 victories for Harrison. Both league games were lost to Tilden, the City Champions of 1926. The league games against Hyde Park resulted much more favorably, however. In the first game the Parker team managed to score a goal, which was made by Owen, but the contest ended in a I-1 tie. In the last game against the team another tie was played, this time the score being o-0. Next year the team will be led by Robert Nebel, who was placed on many all-section teams because of his remarkable defensive ability. VValter Feflngren, who will be playing his third year on the team, will be another one of the boys that next year's team will depend on. Besides these Richard Hill, Robert Murray and Albert Long will also return. Many of the players will be lost to the team because of graduation. One of these is Lewis Schuman, the captain of this year's team, who played a line game in the forward line. 'lack Owen, David Keniston, Paul Colby, Harry Bryant and George Shaffner are also graduating. The team won four practice games and lost seven: St. Rita lost twice to Parker, and Hyde Park and University High dropped the other two games. Parker opened the league schedule on January 5 with a 22-9 victory over Bowen. Morgan Park was the next victim, Parker winning 26-15. In a close game at Calumet Parker won, 13-1 1. F enger also lost to the local squad. Morgan Park again fell before Parker's attack, 22-17. Capt. Barber led the winners with ni'ne points. A return game at Bowen was dropped 26-14, which left Parker and Bowen tied for first place. The heavies trounced Calumet by a score of 23-5. Worden scored fourteen points in this game. Fenger was subdued in the final game of the schedule 21-15, in which F lesher starred with four baskets. By tying Bowen for the South Section title, Parker earned the right to play in the semi-final games. The first semi-final tilt was dropped to Englewood 21-16, Russell scoring seven points for Parker. Lindblom took the next game 23-14. Murray, a lightweight playing with the heavies in the semi-finals, played an out- standing defensive game. Bowen was Parker's opponent in the last semi--final game, and Parker, by winning 28-20, won the undisputed South Section title. Allan made two beautiful long shots and contributed some fine guarding. Allan Russell led the team in scoring with 119 points. Worden was second with 98, and Captain Barber third, with 73. Worden and Fowler were the only two seniors on the team. The team started the season by winning practice games from Lindblom and University High twice, and by losing to Hyde Park. On April 20 the league games started, Fenger being the first victim of Parker's machine. Play was resumed after the spring vacation, when Parker met Calumet and was again victorious. Three days later, on May 6, Morgan Park gave us the first setback in a hotly contested game by the score Of 5-4. Parker then extended its string of defeats to three by losing to Fenger and Calumet. Victories over Morgan Park and Bowen in the next two contests put Parker back in the running, the team thesn being tied with Calumet for second place, making a playoff game necessary, so that Parker, the winner, was eligible to play in the semi-Finals. The team was led by Captain George Covington, the short stop, and leading hitter of the squad. The pitching was handled by Willard Reinert, while Shobe, the second baseman, ab-ly assisted him. The other members of the team were Bob O'Leary, catcher, Dan Ferner, first base, Roland Jones, third base, Allan Russell, left Field, Tom Taylor and Robert Nebel, right field, and Stan Saluski, center field, this years captain. The substitutes were jack Owen, Carroll Gebhardt. William Barber and Art Bohart. It is called the baseball club and was started so that those not interested in volleyball could meet during the seventh period Thursday to play baseball. The Hiking Club has also had a successful year. . THE EQUESTRIAN CLUB The Equestrian Club was organized in September under the sponsorship of Miss Virginia C. Merrit, vocational adviser. The beginning Equestrian club was organized under Miss Elsie Humbach, domestic science teacher in Parker Junior High. Both classes rode every Friday. The beginning classes rode at the academy, located at 61st street and Drexel boulevardf As soon as the pupils were capable of managing their horses, they rode on the Midway and in Jackson Park. The following semester the girls continued to ride out, but, compared to the semester before, the membership had greatly decreased.
