Our Var- sity Volleyball team were co-champions and went to state for the first time. Jean Joshevama broke the girls record Qcross countryb at divisionals. But, the year was not full of triumphs. As you know, we lost two verym s.,.f: : g U i f . I ,from PMB. gglerepysgllainfi aw? D ttnyolved iwtmgicr Qutomow accide1'rtt Neither Hf'fl'61i shall er be forgotten. As you view the contents of this yearbook, you will find it to be more of what you, the student body, want. This year we listened to what you wanted in a year- book, and in return, you got it. On behalf of the Yearbook staff, we wish to congratu- late the graduating class of nineteen hundred and eighty-eight. Each year the Parker High School Annual is dedicated to a special per- son. This year, to continue the tradi- tion, a very special lady has been selected. She is the backbone to the production of the annual, and a dear friend to all who know her. We, the yearbook staff, dedicate the 1988 Parker High School Annual to Sue Anne Boeve Uden. Sue, daughter of Sonja and Ron- ald Boeve, has taught at Parker High since 1982. She has held the posi- tion of Yearbook Advisor for six years. She was the J.V. Volleyball coach for 2 years, and the Take- down Club advisor for three. Sue was born on October 3rd, 1959, in Holland, Michigan. She spent the prime of her youth in Lan- sing and then remained in Holland until 1981 when she spent one year teaching English in Kobe, Japan. Then in 1982, she joined the teach- ing staff here in Parker. Sue has always been a very athle- tic person which is displayed by the several sports she has been a part of in her life. While attending high school, Sue was a member of the swim team, the softball team, the volleyball team and the track team. Then while attending Hope College, Sue was made a Morale Girl and Coach of a very famous tradition, The Pull. This is an activity where 20 guys and girls are selected from the freshman and sophomore classes. The 20 guys participate in a glorified tug-of-war across a river while the 20 girls give them morale or support. The tradition is well known throughout the mid-west and each year, hundreds of alumni re- turn to watch the event. ln 1983, Sue exhanged vows with Kevin Uden. Then in 1985, Sue had her first child Matthew. They are now expecting another child in Janu- ary, 1988. This year, unfortunately, will be Sue's last year here at Parker High. She will be missed by all that knew her, but hopefully fate will guide her to return to P.H.S. in the future. 2!Dedication Sue Uden in second grade. ii , f- s J 1 MQ ' il i . f 1 g 5 l 4 az ggi, MA f 3 Q, Ep Q 5 S - 'J . . , 6 .,,,g K . 1 5 a 2 4 225, Serving during a Varsity Volleyball game. .. s SX K f Mrs. Uden in 1987 at P.H.S. Ending the first half on a positive note, the Broncs went into half time leading the Wranglers, 18-7. Even though the Broncs put forth a tremen- dous effort, the Wranglers managed to achieve a victory with a final score of 27-18. Dustin Miller makes the catch. Broncs ready for the game. Jeremy Mathers and Diana Shorter as well as Jer- emy's parents and sister were in- volved in a fatal car accident on their way home from a football game. This unfortunate loss hit out school hard as fellow students and friends remembered Jeremy's spiked hair and Diana's ear to ear smile. So, in memory of Jeremy and Diana, we add this memorial page to the 1987- 1988 La Reata. Most Athletic: David Nelson 84 Tina Woodside 'Ali-4, - - Class Clown. The 1987-1988 school year was a busy and rewarding one for the Stu- dents Against Driving Drunk club. They hoped the activities and events they performed this year, would get the students and community more aware of S.A.D.D. This goal was clear- ly reached throughout the entire year. S.A.D.D, planned many new activi- ties this year that were designed to grab the attention of the community and of the students. Some of the events were: Parent's Night, a New Year's non-alcoholic party, valet parking at the Prom, and a S.A.D.D. rally which involved all the other S.A.D.D. clubs along the Colorado River. President Michelle Stevens said, I believe this year's S.A.D,D. club has made a difference, and has made people aware of the problem of driv- ing drunk. This difference she spoke of was evident through the enthusi- asm ofthe club members and the re- ceptiveness from the community. During all the planning and crazi- ness of getting everything ready, S.A.D.D. members made sure that ev- eryone knew why they were there. That message is: Drinking and Driving Don't Mix. At the second meet in Wickenburg, Jean Joshevama broke the course record. From then on, the girls team ran for a perfect 6-O record in dual meets. The boys were fighting just as strong with 5-1 record. Parker was up against A, AA, and AAA schools at the invitational meets. This did not intimidate the Bronc runners though. At Boulder City, 6 out of our 10 runners returned home with medals. At the Min- gus lnvitational, which is considered to be the lar- gest meet before state, the boys finished first and the girls took second. The Broncs' almost certain success at Divisionals was slightly detoured by several injuries. The boys team did maintain a strong third with second place only 3 points away. Seven of the P.H.S. runners qualified to run in the State meet: Aaron Denny, Fritz Clemens, Jonathon Moore, Chris Granger, Jean Joshevama, Sheila McCabe, and Julie Carlson. After another successful year, with a second place finish in the A-West divi- sion, the team was ready for the divisional tourna- ment. The many hours of hard work and Saturday practices were ready to be tested as they trav- elled to Buckeye. Coach Sandusky stated, I am very proud of these guys and all of their hard work because we were not ex- pected to be as success- ful as in years past. The Bronc pride shines on! They played a total of 22 games in the regular season and ended up 22-O. For three years in a row the Lady Broncs are the A West Divisional Champs, and once again they will represent P.H.S. at the State Tournament. The Parker Girls have shown a huge amount of spirit and motiva- tion to go through this season. They are a short team, but what they lack in height they make up for in speed and determination. Miss Voegtli, the Parker Bronc coach, was quite satisfied with the result of her team's season, and as always happy to continue the season on to the state games. The Parker Girls Basketball pro- gram has always been an example of excellence. They have shown their skill and sportsmanship on and off the court. During the four day camp, they learned many cheers and chants. They returned home as thei'G Qrfor the third year in a row. On De- cember 26 they travelled to Nashville to compete in the Small Varsity Division for the ICF Cheerleading Champion- ship. Even though they did not make the finals they were hap- py with their performance. Again the Cheerleaders repre- sented P.H.S. in an outstanding way. Varsity Cheerleaders! 131 Sparkle And Shine The J.V. Cheerleaders are a group of girls the high school can definitely be proud of. Not only do they cheer for the J.V. and Freshmen sports, but they represent P.H.S. with out- standing showmanship. The squad attended camp in Pres- cott in early August along with the Varsity squad. They won various rib- bons for creativity, cheer execution, stunts and jumps, and sparkle and shine. They received a sparkle and shine ribbon every night of camp, which is awarded for outstanding spirit. On the last day they also de- fended the Grand Champion title for the second year in a row in their division. The J.V. They had a rough start by losing four of their members before school even began. But the six that were left did an outstanding job up un- til the middle of the year. Towards the middle of the year, they lost two more members out of the six, but the four left didn't let that stop them from showing their sparkle. The Poms set many goals for themselves at the very beginning of the season. One was to at- tend summer camp at N.A.U. which they achieved and at which they performed excellent- ly. Another was to attend the Fiesta Bowl competi- tion. However, due to un- forseen circumstances, they did not get to attend. Through trial and error, the Poms accomplished very much.
