It is nationally sponsored by the Elks to combat world communism May Day celebrations. Here, Youth Day opportunities are open to Juniors and Seniors, and are divided into two phases. One phase enables students to be placed in a job they are interested in. This gives students a better understanding of business procedures and problems. The second phase is assuming political leadership in town offices for the day. School elections, correct in procedure in almost every detail, with registered voters, election books, and an election board, are held to elect the Youth Day Town Council. The Youth Day Town Council meets and appoints students to fill public jobs. On Youth Day they tour the town with their counterparts, have lunch at the Elks Lodge, and conduct a town council meeting. They were represented at the Student Council Workshop held on the campus of Arizona State University last summer by Steve Suffecool and Rita Wendt. David Muse, Marilou Beaver, Steve Suffecool. and Mr. Goar represented Parker at the 33rd Annual Association of Student Councils Convention held at Tempe High School, December 2nd and 3rd. The Student Council was responsible for the organization of the Homecoming Activities. They sponsored the Barbeque. the Homecoming Dance, and coordinated the half-time show for the homecoming game between Parker and Wickenburg. The Council worked to promote school spirit by sponsoring Pep Assemblies and Spirit Poster Contests. Skits, cheers, band numbers, and cheering contests were a part of the lively Pep Assemblies. The Student Council also organized the painting of the Bronc on the gym floor by Senior Neil Flores. Christmas cards were made for the council by the Art Club. These beautiful personalized cards were mailed out to schools all over the state. Funds were taken from the Council’s checking account and placed in a savings account where they will draw interest. In this way funds will be making money instead of remaining idle in a checking account. Intramural basketball was organized. There was a boy's league consisting of 4 teams, and a girl's league consisting of 6 teams. The exciting games were enjoyed by the entire student body. 76 SPONSOR AND OFFICERS Secretary Becky Shill, Mr. Goar, Treasurer Judy Graham, Vice-President Rita Wendt, President Steve Suf-fecool. The parade started at 3:00 p.m. At 8:00 p.m. the Homecoming game with Wickenburg began. During half time the winning floats were driven around the football field and the P was lighted. Old Grads Mrs. Ray H. Thompson and Mr. Buster Ripberger were honored. Travis Nopah and Marena Merritt were crowned king and queen. After the Broncs beat Wickenburg 20-14, the homecoming dance was held in the gym. The photos below were taken at the Barbecue and Alumni Tea. The Parade Halftime All four classes, the Art Club, and the FAA-FHA had floats in competition. FTA, Honor Society, and Upward Bound were represented by signs. The band and football teams rode on floats. The queen candidates rode and pom pon girls marched. The first prize of $30 was given to the Sophomores for their float Wipe Em Out. The second prize, $20, was given to the Seniors for their float Breakfast of Champions. The Junior class received $10 for third place; their theme was Town without Pity. Coach Simmons stated that this was one of his favorite football teams, as they were devo-ted to the game, gave outstanding efforts, and attended practices conscientiously. This was the year of almosts for the Broncs. They almost beat Kingman, Class 1A North Champions. scoring 13 points in the first quarter, but finally losing the battle 18-13. They almost beat old rival Needles, leading until the last 25 seconds of the game, than losing 21-19. Parker almost won the B-West Conference Championship, tying Antelope 27-27 in the regular season game, as Steve DeVoe scored two long touchdowns and Garry Neider returned a kickoff 90 yards for the tying touchdown. The Broncs then lost to Antelope 7-0 in the play-off game. Many exciting games were played this year as the Broncs used a split end-flankerback offense and passed often. The offense averaged 28 points per game, or one touchdown in every quarter played, and scored over 50 points twice. The homecoming game against traditional arch-rival Wickenburg was won 20-14 with brilliant play in the fourth quarter. The Broncs have now retained the axe for four consecutive years. The Broncs will be losing thirteen seniors this year, including eight who were chosen on the All-Conference Teams. All-Conference players from Parker are: OFFENSE: Larry Neider, guard; Rick Davis, tackle; Garry Neider, splitback; and Travis Nopah, halfback. DEFENSE: Rudy Flores, back; Earl Zeyou-ma, linebacker; Steve DeVoe, end; and Mike Bowlin, tackle. Other seniors are Larry Gerbitz, Bradford Dock, Bobby White, Jerry Cunningham, and Starlie Polacca. The Broncs will have many players returning also, and will be looking forward to another good season next year. They will also be looking forward to playing Payson and Phoenix Christian, who will be added to the B-West Conference, but regret that they will not be able to schedule former foes San Pas-qual and Kingman. 106 The 1966 Varsity Football Team BELOW: All-Conference - Larry Neider, Rick Davis, Travis Nopah, Garry Neider, Mike Bowlin. The boys pictured below won the first State Championship ever earned by a Parker High School Team. After playing a tough conference season in a year when almost all B-West schools had good senior ball clubs, and also competing against several larger non-conference foes, the Broncs went to the B-West Tournament at Wickenburg. The second semester had seen the club gain 3 new players--Kenton Track, Rudy Flores, and Donald Eddy. Thus strengthened, the team won the B-West Tournament as it had already won the B-West Conference Championship. The State Tournament in Phoenix soon developed into a showdown battle as Parker and St. Johns, defending State champs, breezed through their first two games. Parker, with its strong bench, defeated Marana 79-54 and a big team from Benson. 62-44. The St. Johns game was a different story as the Broncs trailed all the way into the waning moments of the 4th quarter. It was the hustling press which caused St. Johns to repeatedly turn over the ball and it was the last minute baskets and free throws of Guthrie Dick, Capt. Travis Nopah and Rudy Flores which gave Parker a 4 point victory and made school history as the Broncs became Arizona's class B Basketball Champions.
