- “THE MAJOR” — I he cornerstone of Black Athletics in Birmingham and the state of Alabama — 1910-1985 PARKER HIGH SCHOOL AND THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT DEDICATES THE SPORT'S SECTION OF THIS ANNUAL TO MR. MAJOR BROWN. Major Brown, the former Alabama State All-American end (1933) was Head Coach at Parker High School from 1943 until 1965. During that period he never had a losing season, including a five season stretch without a single losing game. During one season, his team set scoring records of 92-0, 83-0 and 77-0 in successive games. Among his greatest players were Buck Buchanan. Lee May and Carlos May. He also worked with our own William “Cap Brown, one of the most outstanding coaches in the city, with a 600-win record. Appropriately, on December 31. 1985, Parker High School was awarded the Major Brown Trophy, after winning the Birmingham City High School Tournament, two days after Mr. Brown passed. It is our hope to keep the spirit and the fine tradition of athletics alive, which Mr. Brown strove to establish. Among Mr. Brown's most significant awards was the establishment of the Major Brown Foundation w hich provides scholarships for scholar-athletes. He has been honored as the Birmingham Grid Forecaster's Coach of the Year and is in its Hall of Fame, and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. The Parker High School Family cherishes the memory of Major Brown, an Athletic Legend!!' 14
