Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1977 volume:

I can remember our sorrow, I can remember our laughter; I know that surely we kissed and cried and ate together; 3 4 I remember our places, and our games, Helen Hoyt And plans we had . . . 5 — The sponsor of the Student Council Association, like most sponsors, has very little time to herself. Aside from working with SCA on fund-raising, she also sponsors the concession stands at ballgames, student elections, mock elections, the talent show, as well as teaching five History classes a day. She also helps with many other school activities. She takes tickets at football and basketball games. When the teams aren’t playing at home, she travels to away games to help the cheerleaders. In past years she has helped the drama club with fund-raising and play productions. Also she has helped the debate team. As well as helping with school organizations and activities, she takes time to help an individual student with his studies or just to talk to him. For those reasons, the yearbook staff has dedicated Traces ' ll to Ms. Lucinda “Cindy” Smith. 7 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY Lewis F. Morris Principal Bryant P. Lumpkin Assistant Principal John A. Our emotions are at a happy medium with regard to our teachers, assignments, and friends. What has already passed and what is to come is still a quietly lying subject of thought. She was sponsored by the Annual Staff and escorted by sophomore Robert Harris. A new tradition was initiated as the campaign was based on a-penny-a-vote and ran for three weeks. The money was counted daily by Chorus Director Mrs. Betty Jo Immel, and each day a report of the leader was given. The proceeds went to the Concert Choir, and were used to purchase sheet music and help defray the costs of their travels. 30 Senior Viola Tisdale was sponsored by the Drama Club. Even with a staff of rookies, we made the year a success and an experience — maybe trying at times for Mr. Kemp — but an experience. We were lucky to have a much larger annual staff this year, with more sophomores and juniors to carry on with the work next year. In spite of our increase in size, deadlines were missed by a long shot as a result of snow, basketball games, and those great six-weeks tests, but we managed to pull through. The staff wants to thank everyone for helping us by buying ads and subscriptions. We’ve worked hard to bring in a variety of new ideas for our annual to make it more enjoyable and more memorable to you! fun® “It’s freezing out here!” “My music — I dropped it!” “What comes next?” The shrill of the whistle sounded and the Park View Marching Dragons began another half-time performance. Thirty students practiced almost daily compiling new shows for Friday night games. Directed by Mr. Dan Harris, the performances were miraculously whipped into shape by the deadline. Required prac- tices resulted in performances at area games which drew praise from the spectators. At the football games they displayed such half-time entertainment as marching to form various designs while playing popular music. Having completed the marching season, the band began preparing concert music. In May, the band presented their Annual Con- cert to the public. The highlight of the year for the Park View Band came at the Clarksville Parade when they marched proudly down the street in their new uniforms and captured a second place trophy. The band members had been working hard for several years raising the money used to purchase the uniforms. By the week before the parade everyone was excited by the fact that the uniforms were on the way and there was much speculation as to whether they would arrive in time for the parade or not. Fortunately, they did and band really looked good in the uniforms that they and Mr. Harris had worked so hard for. The Majorettes and Color Guard also did their share of the work of performing at foot- ball games. They worked hard to be able to march with the band and do routines to the music the band played. Senior band members hold trophies from the Clarksville Christmas Parade. The trophies were for marching and playing. The Color Guard under the direction of Mr. Dan Harris, is a honor organization made up of young talen- ted ladies. The purpose of the Color Guard is to show off the flags of the country, the state, and the school. The members are: Veronica Jones, Evelyn Jones, Threatha Evans, Betty Minor, LeVern Whisonant, Renae Tally, Jackie Jones, and Thelma Chavis. THE BETA CLUB The purpose of the Beta Club is to stimulate effort, reward, achievement, and to encourage and assist its members to continue their education after high school. The Beta Club at Park View Senior had about 10 new members to join. The sponsor of the Beta Club is Mrs. Mildred Bracey. Among the many activities of the Beta Club are; the sponsoring of a magician act given at the school, the Beta Club sent some members to the Beta Club Convention in March, the Beta Club will be sponsoring a book award to be given to a Senior and also the Beta Club uses funds in the betterment of the school, especially in the athletic and sports fields. The members of the Beta Club are: Ronnie Bradner, Donna Cappaert, Jeff Cleaton, Brenda Coleman, Darlene Corum, Lina Sue Crowder, Kendall Gee, Tim Harris, David Javier, Carolyn Jiggetts, Debra King, Barbara Lynn, Beth Martin, Karen Nanney, Wanda Reese, Everdean Tisdale, Erin VonGrabell, Darlene Walker, Sally Wilson, Jeff Kidd, Michele Hash, Billy Baird, Irma Barnette, Dennis Pinnell, Martha Jessup, Debbie Piercy, and Evelyn Jones. THE DRAMA CLUB The Drama Club, under the leadership of Mrs. Smith, had two major purposes. One was to encourage interest in the field of drama. The second one was to give the students an opportunity to engage in some of the activities that go along with the field of drama. The officers of the Drama Club were: President: Lisa Braswell; Vice-President: Joe Whitehead; Secretary: Jeff Cleaton; Treasurer: Viola Tisdale; and Corresponding Secretary: Debra Hall. The members included: Penny Talley, Vicky Clairborne, Jeff Cleaton, Ramona Harris, Warlisha Whisonant, Carol Gram- mar, Debra Hall, Michael Tisdale, Susan Grammar, Lisa Braswell, Frankie Crenshaw, Erica Hudson, Elvia Simmons, Viola Tisdale, Hiwatha Rogers, Maggie Gregory, Grace Harris, Joe Whitehead, Teresa Claiborne, Mary Tudor, Connie Parrot, Eura- dion Lyons, and Belinda Wells. 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and . . . the Concert Choir has drilled the simple exercise many times in practice and in preparation for performances. The Choir had a busy year. Their first public performances of the year was the Christmas Concert. In February, some members of the Choir participated in the VMEA District III All-Regional Chorus. From there the group worked up a Spring Concert. They also performed some of the spring music at neighboring elementary schools. To bring a close to the year, the choir performed at graduation. Forensics Team The Forensics Team was very successful in their competition in the district, regional and state this year. The team sent eight contestants to the district and all eight placed first, second or third. This enabled them to capture first place in the district and for the first time bring Park View a shinny trophie home. After the district, the team went to the Longwood Invitational. Although the team didn’t win, the experience was good. In the regional, two of the team members placed which gave them the chance to go to the state. It is an organization that gives students ex- perience in research, enables them to analize subject matter, helps them to develop speeches relating to the topic involved and it also enables them to speak intelligently and be alert at all times in arguing the points set forth. It also enables them to observe good sportsmanship and maintain their calm. The Debate Team took first place at the district debate at Longwood College. Park View’s four man team won the regional debate at Longwood, also, which entitled them to participate in the state debate in Charlottesville. The members were: David Javier, Eddie Bugg, Chris Moore, Kevin Crowder, Danny Wilson, Sally Wilson. F.H.A. DANGER CONSTRUCTION AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONir Blocks By “THE THREE HAMS” Class of ’78 Honors Class Of ’77 Even though the temperature was high and the crowd was large, the prom of ’77 will long be remembered by the many students and guests that attended. It was hard to believe that the plain, ordinary gym could be transfor- med into a nice place to have a prom. The juniors must be commended on their hard and diligent work. Many long hours were put into the preparation of the prom that carried the theme “A Star Is Born”. Truly “a star” or the tradition of the prom was reborn. The juniors came through by raising the needed money to have the prom, unlike the junior class did last year. The tradition was hopefully reborn this year to be carried on throughout coming years.
