The study of history encompassed the important events and intellectual achievements of the past. The present was illuminated by an understanding of the sweep of recorded human history. The study of history prepared stu¬ dents for careers in teaching, journalism, government, and for the study of law. Students surveyed the development of nationalism, democracy, and industrial capitalism. Students studied the American Indian, the development of Industry, the Mid¬ dle Ages, and Modernism. Students learned to culivate news sources, establish contacts, and the ethical responsibilities of the reporter. Communications Law, an integral part of the journalism program, introduced a study of the status and regulations of the laws governing the press. Students conducted an analysis of defamation, contempt, privacy, freedom of speech, censorship, and political expression. Students practiced editing news, headline writing, and the principles of layout and design. For those whose riding levels became suffi¬ ciently high, equine involved schooling and teaching.
