The members are also strongly involved in campus activities, such as athletics and student government. Service activities of the club this year included cleaning up the Point, and rebuilding the White Aloe bridge. They were called the Wallflowers until 1970, when they became S. A. S. The clubs purpose is to promote an intrest in aca¬ demics and a feeling of sisterhood among it ' s members. Among the activities of S.A.S. this year were a Sadie Hawkins party, a greaser dance, and a caroling party. The club also do¬ nated money to a home for child¬ ren. Officers: President--Brookie Blake Vice-President--Suzie Powis Secretary-Treasurer--Celia Schnetzer S.A.S It seems Park’s Fresh have always had to prove themselves worthy of their place in the Park Family. In the past they have battled Sophmores in barrel rushes, base¬ ball games, and tugs of war. As the years went by the Juniors and Seniors joined in, and helped to create events such as Humil¬ iation Week, and a special Saturday night orientation class, designed to help the wee babes become better acquainted with Park ' s history, the upperclassmen, and each other. Around 1954 these events were christ¬ ened Hell Week, and the goon squad was called down from the North Country to assist the upperclassmen as they helped the Frosh along the path to adulthood. This year was no different. It began on Wednesday night when the Frosh designed their nametags, and be¬ gan to eagerly anticipate Thursday, when the goon squad would be introduced to them, and the real fun would begin. The entries were many and varied, with The Mic- ronesions taking first place by perform¬ ing some native dances. Pat Doughty came in second, playing and singing an original piece. A band, composed of Lance Hallam, Mitch Gelber, and Doug Gourley was third, playing Mitch Gelber’s arrangement of McArther’s Park, ” Hank Doktorski came in fourth playing the piano and singing an original adaptation of Kan¬ sas City, and Brenda Jones came in fifth singing some Broadway hits. Talent Show On October 19th Park opened its gates to the people of Kansas City and the sur¬ rounding area, and offered them a chance to spend the day with their families, play¬ ing among the trees and hills. The day was christened An Autumn Outing at Park College, and was meant to mark the be¬ ginning of Park ' s 101st school year. The day contained a variety of events, beginning with a worship service in the chaple, and ending with a Northland Sym¬ phony concert. Other events included tours of Mackay, a horsemanship demonstrat¬ ion, a muzzle loader rifle demonstration, hiking tours, and picnics in the woods. Harvest Fest Harvest Fest came to Park with it ' s us¬ ual flair of color and festivity. This year saw the addition of a powder puff football game, in which the New Dorm Hustlers took on the Hawley Harem, with the Harem coming out ahead. The highlight of the festivities was the traditional Harvest Festival Ball. Angela Jones and Norman Knight reigned as Queen and King at the Plaza International Hotel, and Tr iology provided the music. 1. Laurie Ruch 2. JoAnne Saunders 3. Ed O ' Brien 4. Marlowe Sherwood 5. Journal Staff Kathy Mason Rick Miller Vicki Gregg Stylus Staff Dr. Merrill Proudfoot Merrily Thomson Griff Palmer Don VandeWalle Kathy Mason Janet Boehm le: In the Spring of 1975, the government of South Viemam fell. As a result, some 130, 000 refugees came to the United States. In October of 1975, about fifty of these refugees began attending Park College. We asked some of them about their thoughts on leaving their homeland, and their impressions of their first year at Park. Here are some of their replies. At this time last year I was attend¬ ing the University in Saigon. I was study¬ ing very hard to pass the final exams of the first year at the University. All the things happened so suddenly that I didn t know that I wou ld have to leave my parents forever. Why did this have to happen? I think I had to pay too high a price to live in the freedom coun¬ try. I thank the people that brought me to America, and I thank the people that helped me so I can forget a little of the sadness. When I came to this country I liked everything, and I liked Park College, too. The American people were good to help us when we came to Park. They have helped us when we needed them. That makes me and my friends feel we have a good new life in this country. My friends and I want to say thank you to all the Americans who helped us at Park. It has only been one year since I left Vietnam, but I feel like it has been ten years since I left. Everyday I am tired and busy with my classes and job. Each evening I think about my mother and our family while I am sitting on the hill of Park College with the green grass below my legs. Everything is strange to me. I have to study about languages, customs, .... many, many things. I have been here for almost a year. Park is the last place I ' ve been living since I left Camp Ft. Chaffee, and I think this is a good place to start my life. When I got here, everything seemed strange to me, but then, I am getting acquainted with things around me. I like my new friends here and I recognize that they are nice open-minded friends. I am Oriental--a little bit quiet, and my friends are westerners-- more liberal. I know there are differences between their culture and mine. For example, it takes some time to be able to use humor with people of such a different culture. Some things are humorous for me, but pathetic or don ' t seem funny to them. Since I have been in the U.S. I always count my calories because Americans have many more fattening foods than Vietnamese do, but I haven ' t worried about getting fat since I ' ve been at Park. At first I didn ' t like American food. I didn ' t like salad dress¬ ing, ketchup, mustard, etc. But now I ' m getting used to it. Since I ' ve been here I feel ignorant about things that have happened in Europe. I used to keep track of the European singers, European actors and actresses. I could tell my friends who the famous European of the year was. Now, I just know about American movies and music. When I asked my American friends, they don ' t know anything about Europe at all. That just makes me feel sorry for them. In Vietnam we study much harder than here. For example, our understanding of math in the 12th grade can compare to a sophomore or junior student here. I learned that most American students have to support themselves while they are in college. That was a surprise to me. In Vietnam I just go to school and study and don ' t have to support myself at so young an age. This gives me time to do things formyself. Now I ' m Ameri¬ canized--! am just like them now. I have to do everything by myself. So far, I have learned how to smoke and drink but I ' m not used to it and I hope I don ' t get used to it, even though I think these are not real bad habits. So I have learned many things during the past months. Maybe in the future I will learn more. I will keep all those experiences to improve myself whether they are good or bad, happy or sad. ” 0 MMiRY A coWMi WE NJED MQRE Of THE Woodward Hall Mid¬ year Venture Gary Schiller Jack Billy Jeff Hoffman Katy Peterson Bill Eaton Mike Stotts Dr, Patton Celia Schnetzer Dr. Wallace Watson Rochonne Williams Sport Scores Basketball Park 97- 50 Central Bible 84- 87 Mid-America Nazarene 83- 70 Columbia 65- 90 William Jewell 75- 88 Kansas Wesleyan 92- 65 Whiteman AFR 64- 63 Avila 90- 81 Mid-America Nazarene 62- 82 Evangel 81- 67 Calvary Bible 67-116 Kansas Wesleyan 66- 70 Baptist Bible 23- 14 Central Bible 67- 83 Graceland 84- 98 Columbia 64- 69 Whiteman AFB 103- 78 Baptist Bible 74- 97 Westminster 76- 79 Baker 65- 63 Harris Teacher 85- 64 Avila Baseball Season Record 0-20 Golf During the first week of June, 1976, Park’s golf team competed in the NAIA National Golf Championship in Bur¬ lington, North Carolina.
