Faced with the usual problems, this year saw the Student Council confronting issues of a new Black group on campus, overriding a BSP decision on the firing of David Kane as STYLUS editor (and its consequent defeat), the impeachment of Kenneth Berger as student council vice- president, and the discontent among the stu¬ dent body concerning the commencement speaker, Nathan Stark. The discussion often got involved and at times out-of-hand with student discontent arising out of necessary closed session. The Association for Black Collegiality is a politically and ethnically oriented organization with the objective of promoting primarily their interests as Black Collegians. In the short time since its inception the organization has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments which cannot be here enumerated. Alpha Phi Omega is a national service fraternity founded at Latayette College in 1925. There are currently over 500 chapters in the U.S., of which Park’s chapter is the ninth. Started in 1929 at Park, APO became inactive in 1949, to be reactivated in April ot 1968 after a year of development. It has grown to about twenty members. APO s purpose is to gather college men in a fraternal organi¬ zation devoted to service. The three guiding principles of the organization are leadership, friendship, and service. While primarily a service fraternity, APO also realizes that to survive it must provide social activities. Unfortunately the reason for the delay must be place directly upon the students who were charged with the responsibility of publishing the Narva. Moreover, it must be understood that last year ' s editor did not submit vital copy for the yearbook until November when legal action was threatened. As you might imagine the extra time involved in these complicated matters have increased the originally estimated publishing costs. The result has been a yearbook which has been reduced from its initially planned size and additional charges which have been paid by this year ' s student body. The bright spot in this entire unfortunate affair is the fine job done by members of the present Board of Student Publication. Without their continued efforts of working together the yearbook would never have been completed. The 1968 soccer season was the year of youth and expectations. The Pirates started the season with a group of mostly inexperienced under¬ classmen, yet went on to establish the best record since the Champi¬ onship team ot 1962. Led by co-captains Bill Schumer and John Kemp, the young Pirates opened the season with convincing victories over two touring Illinois schools: Blackburn College and Principia College, 6-3 and 8-2 respectively. Reality came back to haunt the Pirates as their inexperience was the decisive factor in a 2-1 loss to St. Benedicts, as the string of never having beaten the Ravens continued. The loss may, however, have been the turning point of the season as Park began to mould into a unit as they defeated the oncoming undefeated Ottawa University team 2-0. With this win, the Pirates gained momentum as they handily rolled past Evangel College 7-1, Washington University 6-1, and Westminster 5-0 to bring their record to 6 and 1. Then Park’s express was quickly derailed as they lost what many thought to be the Conference title game to the Rockhurst Hawks 3-0. Statistically the Pirates dominated the game, but could not find the range, and saw their title hopes demolished. The next week on Homecoming, the Pirates bounced back to defeat the William Jewell Cardinals for a 2-1 Harvest Festival victory. Park finished the season on a disappointing note as they traveled to Ottawa for the first annual Andrew B. Martin Tournament, and after winning the first round game from William Jewell 2-0 in the morning, had to face the Ottawa squad in the finals that night. Playing on a muddy field in 20° weather under the lights, the Pirates gave up an early score and had to settle for second place on a 1-0 loss to the Braves. The Park squad placed five players on the All-Tournament team: John Kemp, Jim Hodge, Lou Green, Tony Parsons, and Tom Eagan. Greater honors were yet to be bestowed upon the Pirates after finishing the season with an 8-3 record and 3-2 in the Mo-Kan Conference for a third place finish. Park proceeded to place two on First Team All- Conference: John Kemp, sophomore fullback and Jim Maris, junior torward. Also honored were four second team members: Bill Schumer, senior goalkeeper, Jim Hodge, sophomore halfback, Tony Parsons, freshman forward, and Tom Eagan, freshman forward. In addition, John Kemp was selected the most Valuable Defensive Player in the Conference. The Pirates were led in scoring by Jim Maris with 11 goals, Tony Par¬ sons with 10, Tom Egan with 5 and Larry Carney with 4. In addition to the bulward defensive play of John Kemp, the Park goalkeeper Bill Schumer registered only 52 saves. According to statistician Brad Smith, the Pirates had 39 goals to their opponents 14, while having outshot them 273 to 111.
