Coach Hal Henderson points the way toward a Pirates victory. Pirates Push The 1966 soccer campaign opened with great expectations for an outstanding season. Led by senior captain Tom Mooney, the team boasted not only a strong array of returning upperclassmen and a number of experienced freshmen but also a new coach—Hal Henderson, However, high hopes were dampened when the season opened with a 4-0 loss to St. Benedict ' s, But the Pirates came back strong to defeat Ottawa 3-0 and were victorious over Rockhurst for the first time in three years, 2-1. Next the Pirates suffered a 3-2 loss to Tabor in overtime. Team morale rose with a 6-5 overtime victory over Ottawa, only to be buried by St. Benedict ' s 6-1 two days later. The Pirates tromped Tabor 5-1 for Harvest Festival, but were unable to hold Rockhurst in the season ' s finale—losing 4-0. The team finished the season with a 9-5 record overall and 4-4 in the Mo-Kan Collegiate Soccer Conference—establishing one of the finest records in Park history. Harriers Record Winning Season The 1966 version of Park Cross Country saw several firsts recorded for the Pirates. The harriers recorded the first winning sea¬ son since varsity competition. They were also represented for the first time in the national meet by Freshman Steve Puryear. The outstanding runner for Park was Fresh¬ man Bill Waters who consistently placed near the top. Returning lettermen Mike Omolecki and Don Ehrett furnished valuable secondary support throughout the season. The team finished up the season with six wins and four losses, and placed fourth in the William Jewell Invitational. We wish to commend Coach Hamilton on this fine re¬ cord. Basketball By combining new freshman talent with the experience of returning lettermen the Roundballers hoped to better the 12-9 record of last year ' s team. The season started off well with victories over Bethany Nazarene, Richards-Gebaur and the Alumni, only to be halted by a losing streak with three games on the road. The rest of the season consisted of victories over Graceland, Calvary Bible, and Friends University and several dis¬ couraging games lost by less than ten points. Especially well-played games were with Greenville (93-96) and McKendree (81-82). The team was led by senior Co-captains Bill Perry and Dave Hackathorn. Several team members ranked high in District No. 16 NAIA standings. Freshman Rich Melendez was the top area scorer, averaging 25 points per game. Dave Hackathorn also ranked high in scoring and was one of the tops in assists. Freshman Jim Gillen led in freethrow percentage, while Bill Perry ranked in the top ten for rebounding. The Pirates were considered one of the best offensive teams in the area. Team Center Jim Gillen. t Co-captain Bill Perry. Guard Rich Melendez. Co-captain Dave Hackathorn. I Forward Marty Davis.
