FOREWORD ik A Japanese haiku is a short, three-line, seventeen- syllable poem, very popular among all classes in Japan. Although it is short, it is by no means simple, for in this extremely rigid form, the poet attempts to create a mood or express an emotion through a mere sketch of it--often suggesting a sort of metaphor between two very different things. The statement is not a complete one; the reader is expected to help create the poem by bringing to it his own memories and emotions. These haiku are usually accom¬ panied by a small sketch suggested by the poem. It is hoped that in the sketches and haiku presented on the division pages of this book, the reader will be able to see, with the help of his own memories and emotions, a slightly different view of Park College. isVi When a nightingale-- Sang out. In order that education may be the means for guiding students in the full cultivation and use of their intellects, talents, and abilities, and in order that it may not become stagnant and dogmatic, it is necessary to continually re-examine and evaluate the goals for which it strives and the way in which it strives for them. To achieve an intelligent and meaningful evaluation of these processes and goals of education, it becomes necessary for men with experience in various academic areas and with a sin¬ cere devotion to education to meet, discuss, and arrive at some kind of conclusion concerning an ob¬ jective revision of the present educational system. It is to such a group of unen, who are concerned with what should be the means and goals of education--the Spec Committee of Park College--that this yearbook is respectfully dedicated.
