To achieve an intelligent and meaningful evaluation of these processes and goals of education, it becomes necessary for men with experience in various academic areas and with a sin¬ cere devotion to education to meet, discuss, and arrive at some kind of conclusion concerning an ob¬ jective revision of the present educational system. It is to such a group of unen, who are concerned with what should be the means and goals of education--the Spec Committee of Park College--that this yearbook is respectfully dedicated. Radloff 4 FOREWORD ik A Japanese haiku is a short, three-line, seventeen- syllable poem, very popular among all classes in Japan. Although it is short, it is by no means simple, for in this extremely rigid form, the poet attempts to create a mood or express an emotion through a mere sketch of it--often suggesting a sort of metaphor between two very different things. The statement is not a complete one; the reader is expected to help create the poem by bringing to it his own memories and emotions. These haiku are usually accom¬ panied by a small sketch suggested by the poem. It is hoped that in the sketches and haiku presented on the division pages of this book, the reader will be able to see, with the help of his own memories and emotions, a slightly different view of Park College. isVi When a nightingale-- Sang out. Harry Hoffman, Supervisor of Teaching Aids, B.S. 31 A DAY AT E.L.I Relatively new to our campus is the English Language Institute. Having just completed its second academic year after a very extensive expansion program made possible by a Ford Grant, the Institute has demonstrated remark¬ able progress. Compared to its beginning years, the student enrollment has more than tripled. In addition to this a number of courses have been added to the new curriculum. The Insti¬ tute also boasts of a very modern language laboratory that has been a great asset to the new program. During the first semester Park College was in the unique position of playing host to twelve African students. All of these students were on scholarship and represented ten of the new African countries. As well as showing outstand¬ ing abilities as students, these students demon¬ strated excellence in group sports as evidenced by one boy being named for the All American Soccer Team. Today we will have a field trip. This year the Institute had students from over twenty different countries. These students have added a great deal of meaning to the regular students at Park College who are desir¬ ous of obtaining that something extra in edu¬ cation. We are looking forward to next year with the foreign students as Park College continues to increas in meaning to all. --Harry W. Hoffman. Students from all over the world study English in the E.L.I. classroom. 32 Relaxing in the J.R. Quite a change from Mother ' s cooking. Laboratory booths greatly help in learning a new language. 33 SENI0R8 This year ' s Senior Class had forty-one graduating members, plus many members who plan to graduate in August. The officers were Mel Blads, President, Peggy Peck, Vice-President, and Sandy Mosiman, Secretary-Treasurer. The class chose as its Marshall, Dr. Arnold Frizzle. It is the last class at Park to wit¬ ness such tilings as regular family style meals and required Wednesday evening Vespers Services. It is also the first class in a long time to have given a banquet to the previous Senior Class, an honor which was returned to them by this year ' s Junior Class. It has been a class made up of the Old Park kind of people and it has set a worthy example for the classes to follow. This is one of the transition classes at Park, experiencing some of the Old Park, and hearing even more about it from the classes before them, and going through a year now of the New Park. It seems to have survived the change while holding on to some of the old traditions which add to Park ' s meaning. It seems to be a class which understands the meaning of spirit, as shown in its leadership in sports, student activities, and student-faculty relations. It has followed the precedent set by the classes before it at Park, and under the leadership of its new officers, John Garrett, President, Karen Garner, Vice-President, Fran Darragh, Secretary, and Sylvia DeFriend, Treas¬ urer, it should move up to be a successful and united Senior Glass. Even it has undergone some changes, such as the abolishment of the Freshman English Requirement. As a class, its only unifying experience so far has been Hell Week, whose rigors it admirably survived, pro¬ ducing some of the most effective goons and goonesses this year. With the potential of its leaders, it will undoubtedly prove to be a worthwhile part of Park College in the next two years. They were greeted with scores of tests of all types and then embarked upon such formidable courses as Natural Science, Western Heritage, and Freshman Seminars. There were many tearful nights in Hawley and bitter words in Copley, but at the end of the year the Frosh pulled through admirably, showing the merits of the new program. As well as being a good group of guinea pigs, they showed a class spirit and unusual maturity in their response to Hell Week. In general, they appear to be what will become an asset to Park. The Benadls are a group of six boys who decided that they wanted to live together for the purpose of giving service to others. They had quite a bit of service to g ive themselves, however, in order to rehabilitate Dyer Apart¬ ments Five and Six where they were to live. Paneling, paint, curtains, and donated rugs and furniture completely changed the char¬ acter of the place, which was displayed to the campus at an open house. The main service project this year was a Christmas party for the Flome for the Mentally Retarded at Marshall, Mo., featuring Bruce Scott as Santa. You ' ve GOTTA give it back, Jane! 88 CHESTNUT The Chesnut brotherhood has enjoyed a success¬ ful year; we began the year (which is a feat in itself) by giving a party for the Freshman Class. A most daring achievement in the dead of winter was the raid on Hawley at 4 a.m. at which time every toilet seat was borrowed in the space of seven minutes. STUDENT COUNCIL STUDENT COUNCIL: Cheryl Wiley, 1st Proportional Representative, Phil DeMoss, Vice President, Frank Henderson, President, Bob Kind- rick (who installed new officers.) Not Pictured: Jan Epperson, 2nd Proportional Representative, Judy Cox, Secretary. The Student Council was elected and took office in May. It met weekly on Monday night at 7 p.m. Some of the first items of business of the third term Council were: to draw up a budget, appoint a Library Committee, appoint Student Union Co- Chairmen, and move the Student Council to the west balcony. The Council room is being decorated this summer with new curtains, a better table, pictures, etc. Because of the reduced size of the student body, the Council members felt that they themselves, working with two additional co-chairmen, could handle the Student Union activities for the summer. Thus, instead of appointing a complete committee, the Council itself has served as the working group of the Student Union with Diane Davis and John Garrett serving as co-chairmen. Because of the many opportunities for entertainment and extra activities in the summer, the Council has devoted its main attention to Student Union parties and events. Several J.R. parties were given, with dancing, ping pong, chess games, bridge, etc. Over the Memorial Day weekend, the Student Union gave a Patio Pizza Party for all students. It was held on the Hawley Dorm Patio. Strong wind kept us constantly lighting the candles on the tables, and 150 threatening rainclouds hovered above. But it didn ' t rain, and dancing and pizza were enjoyed by all. Also on that weekend, the Student Union gave a picnic for the student body and some of the faculty members at President Morrill ' s house. The Student Union sponsored a raid on Hawley by the men of Dearning. The girls, summoned from their rooms at 12:30 a.m., were escorted up to Bearing where refreshments and dancing were en¬ joyed on the Bearing Patio. On June 22nd, the Student Union gave a Hawaiian Luau at the swimming pool and Brig. Students came in Hawaiian attire--muumuus and Bermudas. After an hour of swimming and recreation in the gym, the Hawaiian type food was served in the Brig. Leila Kimura and Judy Eklund did a Hawaiian dance and later other students joined in the dancing with their various versions of old native dances--the twist, mashed potato, the pony, etc. The Student Union also planned and sponsored several trips into KC for the student body and interested faculty and staff members. They went to see Showboat at the Starlight Theatre, to see the KC A ' s play baseball, and to the Swope Park Zoo (at the request of several students who had a great desire to see the pregnant hippopotamus.) --Cheryl Wiley STUBENT UNION COM¬ MITTEE: Co-Chairmen, Biane Bavis and John Garrett, Members, Frank Henderson, Cheryl Wiley, and Phil Be- Moss.
