IFT rTi y 1 iwllf A- jM jMj4 f sj3k? Hail, hail Park College .. . Thy name forever a guiding light shall be izations Operations Directory ' 4 Dedicated to Mr. Leon Robbins, Outstanding Professor 4 - m Dedication In his passing, not only have we lost a dynamic teacher and outstanding leader, but, moreover, a portion of Park College itself. No other person associated with this institution greater exemplified the strength of character and wisdom of life that can be gained through Christian faith and labor. As long as these objectives prevail, his fondest dreams will remain alive and growing. Memoriam In Memorial to Dr. Walter Frederick Sanders, Dean Emeritus of Park College Dr. Sanders was Dean of Park College from 1920 until 1946. During these years, he was responsible for the development of Park into one of the country’s outstanding liberal arts colleges. We, his beneficiaries, are truly grateful for the legacy he has left us. 5 Mrs. Morrill, Dr. Morrill, Antoinette Baubion, Shiela Parnell, Julia, Paul, and Charles Morrill Nof pictured; Guy Morrill, freshman at Wooster College. Director of the Instimte is Dr. George Barber, with Ralph H. Jackson and Dr. Wesley C. Panunzio making up the rest of the staff. Located directly behind Nickel Dormitory, the laboratory itself had forty booths. Each individual booth has one set of earphones and a microphone. The student places the earphones on his head and then selects the volume of the recording being played. By means of the microphone, the smdent can answer any question the professor may ask him. If the smdent is doing a simple listen and repeat” exercise, he speaks into the microphone. Thus, the professor can hear the individual smdent and ask specific questions without interrupting the rest of the class. This laboratory has been arranged so that four different tape recordings can be played at the same time, thus allowing different students to use different tapes at one time. The laboratory also has ten booths for the recording of students’ voices, so each student may have a copy of the lesson to study at his dormitory. Inside the booth. This year Park College has twenty-five full time Instimte students and one off-campus smdent. These smdents came from nine different countries; two from Iraq, four from Iran, nine from China, two from Panama, one from Korea, one from Mex¬ ico, one from Syria, three from Japan, and one from Venezuela. 31 Paul Thackaberry Outstanding Parkites Betsy Streeter The Outstanding Parkite Award is given to the senior man and woman who most ex¬ emplify the ideals of Park College in their character, conduct, scholarship, and student activities. 33 WHO’S ' WWO — Seated: Carol Groundwater, John Washburn, Carolyn DeFriend, Lucy Picco, Gordon Edwards. A hall steeped in tradition, the serene structure of Herr House houses the upperclass women of Park College. However, within these hallowed halls beat a heart of pure adventure, exemplified by the theft in the still of the early morning of the Hearing mascot, the greeting of the men of Woodward with shouts of approval, the showing of equal abilities at twisting” to the men of Copley, the calculating and captivating vamping” at the House Party aptly titled The Inferno” and the exuberance shown at the numerous other parties during the year. Mom” Fleming resides in these sometimes chaotic surroundings with patience which is repaid in the graciousness and poise with which her girls” greet their guests at Herr House Open House and other occasions calling for it. Copley-Thaw A loud shout from one end of the hall, a record player booming, a radio blaring, and wres¬ tling in the halls were some of the commonplace Copley-Thaw activities. This past year, eighty freshman boys lived in harmony” at this hal¬ lowed hall. Each boy helped clean and decorate the dorm for such activities as the Open House, Dormitory the House Party, the Roaring Twenties Dance, and Saturday night smokers. Then, although it is commonly known that Copley men” are not sentimental, a few tears were shed as boys left in May to return home to summer jobs and summer school. SECOND SEMESTER: President Roger Brookman, Catch-all Dave Arnold, Social Chairman Archie Font. Chestnut Dormitory The Men-of-the-Famous (or Infamous)-C r e s t feel that the 1961-62 school term has witnessed a successful series of activities, ranging from the wild orgy” held at the Niles Home for Children, to an atmosphere which gave moment for nostalgia and sentimentality — the Christmas party in the once- manly dormitory now called Stephens. Again our house party exceeded all expectations, and was even more impressive than last year’s. This holds true as well for our somewhat more unofficial farewell fest held in honor of our graduating camarades de dortoir, and traditionally taking place at . . . (in¬ formation classified.) The academic picture has not been marred by any of this — we have worked, as we have hacked” with rare exception, and now we can look back on a year full of fond memories. The Men of Chesnut 101 Bearing Hall Bearing Hall, Park’s new dormitory, named after an unseen friend of the college, stands where Chesnut stood in the old years — Dearing-on-the- Hill. Upperclassmen, living here, follow the high footbridge to the campus where girls from the orig¬ inal Chesnut once walked. Dr. Peter Hilty is the Head Resident, and the officers are: Vin Pronger, President; Lynn Minert, Vice-President; John Ra¬ mirez, Treasurer; and John Hilsop and John Laderer, Social Chairmen. The Bearing men have a glee club, directed by Roy Magers, have held parties for each of the girls’ dorms on campus, and have lighted their fireplace with a flame carried from Hawley. Their forty-five foot high red-light Christmas tree was a Yuletide symbol to the college and town. What we remember from Bearing’s first year are the snowy nights before a fireplace, with a quiet T.V. show or a record and long talks. men of Nickel Hall and I amnit” entertain Bev Somerville, Honorary Member. ♦ Nickel Hall 103 Woodward Houseparents, Mr. Hearson and Linda. Outstanding players for Park were Paul Thack¬ aberry, a senior, who led the scoring with a total of 10 goals; and John Clarke, a senior goalie, who had a total of 85 saves.
