WAGSTAFF «« « ' IVlemories Probe No one can ever predict what memory will come back to haunt or please us. Sometimes in a flood of recollections one small instance of worth or beauty or truth will stand out in absolute clarity. All the rest falls away into the shadows; out of one instance your world will move ahead and be reshaped. In the years to come, turning these pages, I predict this will happen to all of you. The pic¬ ture of a person or event, the description of some excitement long past will call back to your mind your communion of friends, your study, your joys at Park this year. To paraphrase some lines of Shakespeare ' s AAuch Ado Abou t Nothing ; The idea of this life shall sweetly creep Into the study of imagination. And every lovely organ of this life Shall come apparel I ' d in more precious habit. More moving-delicate and full of life Into the eye and prospect of your soul. (Signed) P. H. In accordance with these goals and ideals, the Campus Church has this year, as always, tried to pre¬ sent a full schedule of religious programs, discussion groups, worship services, and opportunities for Christian service. The budget adopted this year called for approxi¬ mately $2000, enabling the Campus Church to con¬ tinue its support of worth-while organizations and groups throughout the world. The Campus Church is governed by a student-fac¬ ulty Board of Elders elected annually at a Congrega¬ tional meeting. This Board, composed of ten Elders, a secretary, treasurer and moderator, has control over the financial, religious and social activities and af¬ fairs of the church, and, with the counsel of the Dean of Religious Life, oversees all the work of the church on the campus and elsewhere. The most important task which the Campus Church has before it is to provide, for Park students, oppor¬ tunities for service and leadership, to develop one ' s sense of stewardship and responsibility to fellow Christians and people of all faiths throughout the world, and, finally, to provide through dormitory dis¬ cussions, Religion in Life Week and the regular ser¬ vice of worship, an atmosphere conducive to the de¬ velopment of one ' s responsibility of life based on the ideals of the Christian faith. 54 Bob Puikka, Moderator first semester; Dean Moore; Bob Myers, A oderator second semester. Before. . . 78 Narva This year the NARVA staff has attempted to add a few new touches to the book, the key to these being an increased accent on infor¬ mality. We have tried to make the general format more consistent in this respect than has been done previously, by using informal set¬ tings and poses for administration and faculty pictures, as well as for student groups and sports events. Thanks are due the staff and several inter¬ ested outsiders for helpful criticisms and ideas; a special thank you is due our photographer for initiating many ideas of his own which enabled us to carry out our plans. The work of numerous copy writers and the cooperation of all those who appeared as scheduled for photos are ap¬ preciated . We hope the general content of the book covers a wide enough area to provide interest¬ ing reading for a majority of students. SECOND SEMESTER STAFF: Joanne Mayes, Business Manager; Dale Cunningham, Associate Editor; Jerre Chitwood, Editor; Paul Thackaberry, Sports Editor; Rae Irwin FIRST SEMESTER STAFF: Joanne Mayes, Business Manager; Sarita Penick and Rae Irwin, Columnists; Dick Hull, Photographer; Norman Dunsmore, Columnist; Jerry Plummer, Editor; Bill Hite, Associate Editor; Walt Humphrey, Assistant Editor. Out of a mass of unrelated events transpiring in the world in general and the Park College scene in particular, an assorted array of various students bend their talents toward producing the campus newspaper, the Stylus . Part of the work involved behind each publication that is cursorily scanned by some and strictly scrutinized by others includes collaring indi¬ viduals to report on special campus events, and glean¬ ing the minds of others of ideas about so-called intel¬ lectual subjects. Jerre Chitwood, Carole White, Gary Clark, Peggy Wallace. Idler As the college ' s only literary journal, the Idler is small but selective and aims at including within its covers only the best examples of student writing submitted for publication. The staff, with Gary Clark as this year ' s editor, reads and decides upon the numerous poems, written in every form from rhymed couplet to sonnet and the stories, ranging in length from a paragraph to several hundred words. The idler , entirely student produced and student sponsored, reflects fairly accurately the degree of student interest in writing of this sort and the quality of student expression. When interest and ability are lacking, the contents are indicative; at the same time, the presence of imaginative and original thought among the students also finds expression in the Idler ' s pages. A steak fry at Melody Lane welcomed new Tonies and Cleos at the close of Rush Week. The Harvest Festival float followed an Egyptian theme, with Bob Dunham as Anthony, and Sandy Mosiman as Cleopatra. Rush week started off with the party at the Bell Road Barn, and was climaxed with a picnic at the Lakeside Country Club, where old and new members enjoyed a day of boating, volleyball, softball, eating, and singing. Outstanding events on the LEC calendar were the initiation party with swimming and bowling, the tri¬ umphant float for the second consecutive year at the Harvest Festival, Lance serenades, the Elaine surprise Christmas party for the Lances, a pizza party, and a car wash. The highlight of the year is always the annual Knight-time Ball, again held at Garrett Hal I in Kansas City. Orion Aurora Club Initiating the club year was a Hawaiian rush week party, complete w ' ith dancing Orions dressed in leis and grass skirts. Dr. and Mrs. Hamilton hosted the get-acquainted party for new members at their home. Chickenwire, paper mache, and straw covered burlap combined to make the Harvest Festival float. Conforming to the theme, Far Away Places the float took us to darkest Africa where two very ferocious natives danced around a giant-sized pot occupied by Dr. Hamilton, whose biological expedition had ap¬ parently been permanently interrupted. Later in the fall the Orions surprised the Auroras with a serenade which was followed by a donut and cider, bowling and dancing party in the Old Jolly Roger. With the help of Jenkin David the OAC Home¬ coming show Infernal Follies was a howling success. The show was followed by a Devil ' s Housewarming in the Meetin ' House, where there were dancing and refreshments in a fiery red atmosphere. 1 Valentine cookies for the Orions “Infernal Follies The OAC Harvest Festival float “Eat ' em up Park ! “ Officers Presidenl-s.Marge Crabtree, Gary Clark Peggy Jandacek, Chuck Smith Vice Presidents.Joy Jacobs, John Eglitis Nan Budlong, Mel Blades Secretaries. . . . King and Queen Mercedes and Bill Officers Parchie Varsity in the making Parchevard Calliopean Club The PCC started off their year with a successful rush party based on the Beatnik theme, followed with a picnic for the new members at water works park. In October the club opened Park ' s social season with the Gold Cotillion held in Commons. Bill Hite and Mercedes Ferrer reigned over the affair as King and Queen. The PCC caught the spirit of Harvest Festival, and worked hard building their float, Polar Picnic. The float featured an igloo and two penguins, and was done in white, silver, and ice-blue. In November the club sponsored a unique Library Rock for the school. Those who attended found a new atmosphere among the books, confessedly not con¬ ducive to study! The club also sponsored the movie Anastasia in January, shown in the Park Theater before a large, enthusiastic audience. AAjch work was done to make the Parchie Varsity, based on the history of motion pictures, equal in cali¬ ber to the traditionally outstanding performances. The PCC also are looking ahead to a spring picnic and ice cream social. At the year ' s end, all members of the club look back on these fun-filled activities which helped to make it another great year for the Purple and Gold. OFFICERS; Warren Furnish, President; Joe Crosby and Steve McConnell, Catch-alls. Santa came to the Chesnut-Stephens Christmas party I The spirit of Chesnut has survived in top drawer fashion through¬ out the year. Late in the evening we find Jay Edwards and his room¬ mate, Nick Khodadad, blowing smoke high up in the room, Nick doing calculus, and Jay reading Playboy . Across the hall there ' s a bridge game being played by John Charlton and Phil Wheeler. Rock ' n Roll hits Chesnut as Dave Graham shows his roommate, Bruce Williams, the hot steps. Steve McConnell Is trying to explain the whys and where¬ fores of girls to his roommate, Gordon Edwards. Next we find ourselves in the middle of a tom-tom as Flarry Hoffman gives it all he ' s got. Bob Fischer is bragging about his pipe collection, while across the hall we find Ed Quade eating some goodies from home as his roommate Mansiour Zabetian is throwing everybody else out! Jan Morris and Shu-Hon Yu are working at those books—chem test coming up! We hear sounds of good music coming from across the hall as John Washburn ex¬ plains the classics to Jerre Chitwood who falls asleep on top of his sack. Next door is complete chaos as Warren Furnish, having had his fill of KCKN, throws Bruce Street out of the room and his radio after him. Paul Thackeberry and his roommate, Dick Schwartz, are discus¬ sing the basketball game as visitors gather. Next we come to the habi¬ tat of Bill Booth, who is sleeping through his alarm, and his roommate, Sam Crawford, who is leaving to answer the phone. What ' s this? No one can ever hope that a men ' s dorm will be a place of peace and quiet. This year, Copley succeeded in surpassing all mischievous expectations. With the night¬ ly bombings, flooded shower rooms, booby traps, blaring Hi-Fi ' s, and general chaos, life at Copley was ever far from uneventful. The dorm officers, representatives, and counselors managed to stay alive by passing legislation at a safe distance, and many noble attempts at law and or¬ der were hard pressed, but were in the end, totally dis¬ regarded. Needless to say. Mom Reister certainly earned the Mom part, for only a mother could put up with all the roughhouseandstilI smile. Open house was a success again this year and our smok¬ ers, parties and raids were well attended and enjoy ed by all. Even though the disap¬ pearance of Nickel ' s bell cost us a damage assessment, it too, was worth it. Hawley Hall Beautiful Hawley Hall has been home to approximately thirty-five girls this year. When the girls moved into campus life they brought with them a zest for life and some resolution to study. It was not long before Mrs. Hawkins was Mom to them all and could be counted on to lend a helping hand when needed, be it parties, fixing popcorn poppers, or Men. Open house, with Shades of White as its theme was the first big affair sponsored by the girls, and with it came a flurry of cleaning and excitement. Hawley had its informal evenings too, with song fests and some hen parties aft closing hours. In observation of previous resolutions the girls did study and voices would become softer and foot¬ steps quieter as the clock would strike eight, signaling in quiet hours. The first few months of dormitory life were perhaps the most challenging of the entire year for each girl as she learned to live with the others. The excitement of the first snowfall mischief, raids, and books! Nineteen girls again mounted the seventy-two steps to Chesnut-Stephens Christmas party their home on the fourth floor of Hawley. Though winded by the long climb (it ' s terrible when you ' re locked out and your key is in the room!), the girls planned a year to be remembered. The traditional off campus splurge was held at Sandy ' s Oak Ridge Manor, in December the men of Chesnut decided to borrow our Christmas tree during the supper hour. Al¬ though our touch of Christmas was gone, our spirit was re¬ newed by a Christmas party given in our honor by the conscious stricken fellows. February brought our formal Open House with a Valentine ' s Day theme, and as Spring rolled around, our well organized house meetings dealt with House Party and WUS carnival plans.
