Casting about for a unifying thread, the staff of the 1978 CHRONICLE found one in Foster Hall in the year of its restoration. Josiah Lilly caused this graceful little granite and brick structure to be erected in the Lilly Orchard. It was originally used as a library and recital hall. When in 1931 Mr. Lilly moved into the building the early editions of the songs of Ste- phen Foster he had begun to col- lect, he named it Foster Hall. During the six years the build- ing housed the collection, more than fifteen thousand persons in- terested in the Pittsburgh com- poser ancl his work visited it, and at lease once a week, Foster pro- grams were presented in the hall.

It is appropriate that Mr. Lilly should have given the Foster Hall collection to the University of Pittsburg. But though the manuscripts are gone, the spirit of harmony that occupied the building remains. It is mirrored in the present, school buildings, which reflect and magnify the design of Foster Hall, and in the life and work of Park-Tudor School. It seems fitting that the tag lines on the division pages should he drawn from the songs of Stephen Foster.
