Team competition isn't the only type, thoughg there is a great deal of individual competition, too. Stu- dents compete against each other to enter clubs and to some extent to get better grades, but some of the most important competition is within rather than between the students. Musicians compete against themselves for a first NB' YN at regional Solo-Ensemble contest, and then again, if they are lucky or skillful enough, at state contest. Every students competes against himself to better his grades, and every student, whether or not he is in sports or music, competes every forty minutes - in the race with the bell. Mr. Williams and Miss Dooley help John Atcheson QAboveJ and the Madrigal Singers CTop Leftj to prepare for Contest weekend. Miss Panson appraises students' histrionic talents during play auditions QLeft and Above Rightj. Many try out for a place in chorus line of The Boy Friend fLeftJ but only a few are chosen. 21

A Time Tu Perform The Show Goes On Backstage before a play: the nervous hum of voices is overwhelming. One can sense the tension in the air. Costumes! an act- ress screams, Iron this dress - and you only have 5 minutes! Last minute dance steps are quickly perfected. A shoe breaks. A dress rips. Hurriedly, it is sewn, pinned, and clipped to its owner. The head of props tries to find a lost hat. People are scurrying, bumping into each other, knocking over backstage scene changes. A voice cries out, 5 minutes! The room is hushed. Chairs are soon filled with terrified beginning-and veteran actors. Lines are repeated over and over. Places! the voice whispers. Breathlessly, amid whispers of Break a legu and You'll do great, people move to their spots on stage. The music lessens and the lights rise. Suddenly, all the nervousness and terror is gone. A laugh in the audience breaks the spell. The endless rehearsals and worry have finally paid off. At Park-Tudor, drama is a learning exper- ience for everyone - from girls who sew the costumes to the people who build the set. The actors sometimes find it difficult to put their talent on the line for everyone to judge. But eventually, as students become accustomed to some criticism and some praise, they learn how to block movement, read lines, design sets and lights, and make costumes. Drama has a few more benefits - besides being hard work and nervousness, it's fun and rewarding. 22 A s I Scenes From The Boy Friend : CTopJ Tony fStu Bowesj and Polly fChristine Cool sonl share a tender moment. fAboveJ Percy QCharles Cebulab and Kiki fSandy Kimblel rekindle an old romance.
