A time to learn, and a time to fall asleep in class after lunch. A time to make practice, and a time to be late and have to run bleacher laps. A time to turn in assignments, and a time to leave them on the kitchen table as we dash out to the bus. A time to go to classes, and a time to sneak out for a stroll in - the woods. A time for healthy attendance, and a time for term-paper- V itis. A time to study with friends, and a time to get one's work accomplished. A time to shout and cheer, and a time to boo and hiss A time to write yearbook copy, and a time to be uninspired This is the story of the way we learn, and play, and compete here at Park-Tudor. This is a record of our times 4 5 A Time TO L6Ell'I'l Learning - That's what we're here to do, but it seems we never do enough. We are swamped with algebraic equations, important historic dates, chemical formulas and difficult essay topics. How do we get it all done? Some spend their time in the -library, research- ing term papers. Some are found studying diligently, some spacing out, others disrupting the halls. Though study hall time may be spent throwing a frisbee, gossiping in the locker bays or cruising the halls, once in class the atomosphere changes. Students argue in literature discussions, work out experiments in the chemistry lab or try to follow a history lecture. We owe much of this education to our teachers. Mr. Linard with logic, Mr. Hawver with dimen- sional analysis, Mr. Berkeley with relaxed an- tagonism and Mr. Black with computer skills help expand our knowledge. Because of our dedicated teachers, the upper school education is truly a unique experience. ff 7 Q? as S5 fi 8 Learning is a continual process, one that does not cease outside the classroom. In- deed., more ofour learning time is spent elsewhere than in class. After obtaining assistance from Mrs. Oldham, it is offto a carrel in the library to research a term paper. We do our last minute cramming for the classroom quiz wherever we can, in a quiet corner ofthe locker bays or before the bell rings in the classroom itself. And we don't always need either books or an organized class to learn. Constructing an art project or completing a video- tape assignment requires us to learn special techniques, to cooperate, and to pace our own abilities. We sometimes learn as much in bull-sessions and class money-raising projects as we do in class. At P-T we have the free- dom to learn in ways that suit us best. N W r i 11 A Time To Participate t the End ofthe Da The bell sounds. It's ten minutes before three o'clock. Where's everybody going? asks a bystander. Planning a party for tomorrow night, screams a Span- ish Club member. I've got a Link Club meeting. I've got Barnstormers' rehearsal? I've got cheerleading practicef, French Club. Varsity Club. Student Faculty Committee meetingf' What do I do? live got to be three places at once?', Surprisingly enough, P-T students don't all go home and study after school. Many of them either participate in ser- vice clubs, language clubs, or sports. The bell rings to signal the end of the day, but activitiy simply changes location. Students migrate to the barn, to the gym, or to the , Commons, and work continues. i School activities often take up a student's weekends. A Saturday Car wash sponsored by the Key and Link Clubs can be monetarily pro- fitable. Providing Thanksgiving dinner for an indigent family, like Var sity Club members do can be spiritually uplifting. And hard hours spent working on the yearbook allow each student to remember it all. 13 El dia de los Reyes, known by Americans as the twelfth night after Christmas, provided the opportunity for a huge Mexican gathering. Native dances, the breaking of the pinata and true comida mexicana highlighted the evening. 14 Viva la Mexico! Authenticity provided the base for this year's Spanish club. Mexican life and culture were em- phasized. Getting together for slide shows, learn- ing songs and dances, having fiestas, and eating at La Paz were all included in this year's activities. President Andrea Neal and vice-presi- dent Margarita Ikawa, both who went to Mexico last summer on the Indiana University Honors Program, enabled the club to get into the true Mexican spirit by sharing their experiences of life in Mexico. W p y p WE Cam N fl fili The Spanish club has a busy month in December The Christmas tree, decorated with all Mexican ornaments, brightens up the lobby The annual Mexican holiday bazaar is always a profitable and enjoyable affair. Class competition allows all students to partici- pate in school spirit . A contest to build the longest spirit chain can be a race for a monetary profit. Selling popcorn is another way for a group to work together to make money for class or club projects. 16 VN as ex A School spirit encompasses participation at its most active. Outdoors or indoors, the feeling is the same as the fans stand up to cheer the team or to boo the refs. At times the game is of lesser im- portance and the real center of activity rests with some daring soul in the bleachers who has suc- ceeded in capturing the attention of the fans as well as the photographer. 17 A Time TO COYTlD6tE On the Field and Off The Urge to Win is Quinn.. The ball hits the rim and drops through, and before anyone can relax, it is in play again. This sort of competition involves everyone, the team and the spectators, but of course, the teams, from lower school up, are the deciding factors in victory Or defeat. Sports is one of the most obvious kinds of competition, but there are other types and other teams, too. The Exercide in Knowledge team prac- tices regularly and competes against other schools, but they compete mentally, not physically. This year um the team defeated Manual High by 40 points in the first round, but then they lost to Arlington by 14 points in the second round elimination, 54-40. Egg : :zz 'Q' M. S-4, JH rv Q Q? N:-ww ,J Team competition isn't the only type, thoughg there is a great deal of individual competition, too. Stu- dents compete against each other to enter clubs and to some extent to get better grades, but some of the most important competition is within rather than between the students. Musicians compete against themselves for a first NB' YN at regional Solo-Ensemble contest, and then again, if they are lucky or skillful enough, at state contest. Every students competes against himself to better his grades, and every student, whether or not he is in sports or music, competes every forty minutes - in the race with the bell. One can sense the tension in the air. Costumes! an act- ress screams, Iron this dress - and you only have 5 minutes! Last minute dance steps are quickly perfected. A shoe breaks. A dress rips. Hurriedly, it is sewn, pinned, and clipped to its owner. The head of props tries to find a lost hat. People are scurrying, bumping into each other, knocking over backstage scene changes. A voice cries out, 5 minutes! The room is hushed. Chairs are soon filled with terrified beginning-and veteran actors. Lines are repeated over and over. Places! the voice whispers. Breathlessly, amid whispers of Break a legu and You'll do great, people move to their spots on stage. The music lessens and the lights rise. Suddenly, all the nervousness and terror is gone. A laugh in the audience breaks the spell. The endless rehearsals and worry have finally paid off. At Park-Tudor, drama is a learning exper- ience for everyone - from girls who sew the costumes to the people who build the set. The actors sometimes find it difficult to put their talent on the line for everyone to judge. But eventually, as students become accustomed to some criticism and some praise, they learn how to block movement, read lines, design sets and lights, and make costumes. Drama has a few more benefits - besides being hard work and nervousness, it's fun and rewarding. 22 A s I Scenes From The Boy Friend : CTopJ Tony fStu Bowesj and Polly fChristine Cool sonl share a tender moment. fAboveJ Percy QCharles Cebulab and Kiki fSandy Kimblel rekindle an old romance. v ...l top leftj Polly and the girls fMarya Jones, Andrea Nealj agree that life is dreary without a boyfriend. Ms. Panson frantically attempts to transform Sandy Kimble into a middle-aged woman. fleftl In a pensive mood, Mr. Williams wonders ifthe musical succeeded. The audience seemed to answer a resounding yes . The dramatic program at Park-Tudor is more than just an Upper School effort three times a year. Lower and Middle Schoolers proved this year that they also love to entertain and be entertained. The Junior Barnstormers of the Middle School worked long and hard on their play The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. The comedy, presented in January, was a big hit with the audience. Upper School Advanced Drama students used their talents to entertain Lower Schoolers at Christmas time. After learning the techni- ques of children's theatre in Advanced Drama, they presented a skit on the Joys of Christ- mas, written by Ms. Bonnie Panson, drama teacher. Some lucky Lower Schoolers parti- cipated as reindeer, and they all received a surprise visit from Santa Claus. The Lower School presented their singing and dramatic skills with The Little Drummer Boy. The Christmas concert, with songs and narration, was performed by the students. l l . 26 ftopj Santa pays a visit to the Lower School. flower leftl Mrs. Panson tells anxious Lower School students what she likes the best about Christ- mas. flower rightj A group of giggly kindergarteners wait to sing their favorite carols. It is an experience, even for seasoned singers. The music department works long and hard at making the groups the best that they can possibly be. The Girl's Ensemble, Park- Tudor Singers, and the Madrigals all know that success means work - and they show the results twice a year at the Christmas and Spring Concerts. The madrigals, under the direction of Mr. Williams, know how to please an audience. They have performed at country clubs, restaurants, and even at the Crossroads fund-raising ball. Their popular renditions, complete with choreography, are just as polished as their classical numbers, one of which won a superior rating at the regional music contest. Although they work hard, the music groups don't complain. In fact, they have fun. The audience's acceptance makes it all worthwhile. i ETVUI, 28 Mr. Williams insists upon a professional attitude from his singers, who rehearse constantly fPrevious Pagej for a variety of performances fAboveb. 29 gg .5Il?5!3,,,5,g, ' 6 It's That Time Of The Season Touchdowns, goals, baskets, pins. The seasons leave their mark on the PT campus. The year goes by and another group of athletes is gone. Only the scorebook remains to record the rebounds, the field goals, the TD's, freethrows and PAT's The falling of leaves and the ripening of apples signal the start of football and soccer season. The soccer field is the place to be on a Tuesday afternoon. And what's a week- end without Saturday cider and football? Thanksgiving approaches and with it, action on the hard- wood. The busiest place on campus is the gymnasium: boy cagers running killers in the big gym, girls practicing layups upstairs, wrestlers writhing on the mat, and cheer- leaders putting mounts together in the lobby. . March comes quickly and the gym becomes empty. Once again, the athletes have moved outside to the field, to the courts and to the diamond. And that's how the seasons pass at Bark-Tudor School. Only during the summer do the grounds look desolate when the fields thirst for cleats and the court longs for tennis shoes. They await the changing of the seasons when it will be their turn again. 30 'V Q Q-if wi, 5 e' 'Yds A if WP , 5' HM ZH, ,I ,W A 7. 55:35 2- - 5 wr 1 4 Swv an 'lf wfa W9 Ep la ' 3fg?M ,A 'i9fffi'31rQ' D, P ,1 . my as Mwfcglf ,if ' 'fs M01 i Q13 5553 :nf 925' -Q wry J, M v .19 .mu 'E Q ,W 3,,4,7ifZ,?vT'i,32! , .X 1 fad' yffffwiqm q,QL.D':w'f:?E7 ,. The mo- mentum began early in -the season with high-scoring games. The offense piled up 130 points in the first four games alone. Ben Davis was ranked in the top six city scorers with 68 points. Unfortunately, as of the fifth game, the opponents got tougher. Panthers lost 33-12 to Zionsville in a game which was crucial to the record and team morale. A much disputed tie in the match-up with Maumee Valley added another set-back to the Panther record. The worst defeat of the season came during the last game against Morgan Park. Panthers were routed 30-0 in the dismal Chicago weather. Nevertheless, the team enjoyed another winning season under Coach Dezelan. Highlights of the year were offensive shutouts over White's Institute and LaLumiere and Ben Davis' all-city honorable mention award. This year's team was distinguished by graduating seniors Bill Elliott, Andy Frew, John Mertz, Kellet Koch, Bill Holt and Davis.. Soccer It was a season of almosts for Park-Tudor's '75 soccer team: almost a winning season, almost a berth in the Indiana State Soccer Tourney, almost an 8-6 but instead a 3-8-3 record. The record lies when it comes to this year's hooters. The front line was seething with talent. Veteran forwards Davis, McAree, and Harris consistently kept the ball on the opponent's side of the field, with the superb help of halfbacks Bennett and Hargadon. The Panthers' tendency was to open the game with a lead and then tire in the second half. The match-up with Heritage in the second round of the state tourney was lost in the closing seconds of the second double-overtime. This year, overtimes were the rule, not the exception. A 4-1 first-round state toumey victory over Chatard was a highlight of the year along with the selection of team captain Dob Bennett as most valuable player. Leading scorer was Rob Davis with seven goals, and both Davis and Bennett were elected to the Southern Indiana Conference All-Star team. 36 Setitup... Put it in . . . Under Coach Trotter's experienced guidance, the team piled up a 3-1 season, including memorable victories over Indiana Central College and I.U.P.U.I. In the match-up with Indiana Central, the oppo- nents' desperation reached such a point that they were compelled to use the game referee as a team player. Despite the fact that team members often couldn't find enough sticks to go around, Cat least without sticks, they couldn't commit sticksj there were many team standouts. The two Betsys fKunz and Kurtzj and Jenny Ralph were handy ball dribblers on the forward line. Halfback Mary Elder, in her third year as varsity hockey player, showed expertise in the backfield. Although at the start of the year Coach Trotter was worried about filling the goalie position, novice Suzanne VanHove played the part well, keeping the opponents' points to a total of four. Field hockey players may only get to play four games a year because of the sparsity of opponents. But that is no sign that the sport is dead. With players like PT's, the sport is played at its best. Wrestling 75-'76 PT grapplers enjoyed a winning season for the first time in years and wrestling moved into the limelight at Park-Tudor. Hard work payed off for the well-balanced team which included four-year men Bill Holt and Bob Goodman. Even the 5-4 dual meet record doesn,t speak for the ability of this year's team. Tourney champions included little Bill Browning, Steve Harris, newcomer Todd Brown, Bob Hicks, Bob Goodman and Bill Holt. Especially note- worthy was junior Chris Doyle who ended the season with a 16-2 match record, including championships at three tourneys and the best wrestler title at the Park-Tudor holiday wrestling tourney. Highlights of the year were a 60-0 win over Indiana Christian Academy and a placing in both the LaLumiere and Maumee tourneys. A year for growing, a year for experience, and finally the pins start coming for Carl. And more pins! Pins . .. Winning is a habit with Chris. For him, pressing shoulders to the mat is an art. A pin means another victory for freshman grappler Bob Hicks. 46 Running enough killers to make one thirsty fAboveJ, and listening diligently to half-time pointers CBelowJ are all part ofplaying the game. But the real test is applying what is learned and proving that practice makes perfect. fRightJ i Basketball The '75-,76 PT cagers enjoyed a winning season. And it was a surprise to everyone. The season started with what was called the basketball crisisf' At first not enough boys came out for the sport to make two teams. Hasty recruitment by Mr. Young, Mr. Treadwell and Mr. Berkeley got results and the varsity and reserves, supplemented by uniformed team manager Eric Guion, were dressed and ready for the season's first game. fm-wuiu--H .,. The varsity's lack of veteran players was not even a handicap. Center John Atcheson and guard Mike Baker were the only returning lettermen, but Baker's brother Steve 'capably filled the other guard position. Freshman Tom Wallace quickly grabbed a forward spot and delighted fans all year with his sure left corner shot. Well-balanced best describes the '75-'76 Panthers. Game high points were shared by Mike Baker, Atcheson and Wallace. Mike's re- bounding abilities occassionally put him at forward and allowed Jeff Yingling and Steve Elrod to show their ball-handling abilities. William Longardner and Jamie Huxhold interchanged their jumping and shooting talents in the forward slot. Novice Bill Elliott, the only senior out for b-ball, not only aroused the fans but occasionally added his name to the scorebook. The fans had a good year too. The weekend games were reminiscent of the '73-'74 season when the Panthers ended 17-4, in part due to the Baker Brothers. The main difference was that this year, Steve joined the ranks, substituting for big brother Bill. Some teams credit their success with experience, others with luck. The only excuse available for the 12-8 Panthers is ability. 47 Tourney Time Tourney time meant triumph for the Panthers this year in the Independent School Tournament January 23 and 24. A 70-49 opening round win over Indianapolis Baptist put the PT cagers in the finals. Not even a broken-down score board could stop the red-hot Panthers in the final game as they whipped Latin School 65-54 and claimed the league crown. i f l.p, , ' F15 1 x f ff57'W eE,5, :Hifi V , fire., I- 1 ' +4 fri ,gr 52 ,, V, sgrzfg I , 1 , il X A5295 4: f 4 .W ,E V N31 j, 1' 1, i..2x,.': A ' iii? r:2 1151f Q 1 ' I' X ffl? For these girls, practice is the key, and long hours of making up words and motions, memorizing routines, practicing chants, planning pep rallies, and decorating halls and lockers result in the creation of the very real concept of school spirit. And never was school spirit more obvious than this year at Park-Tudor. The Spirit Award came into existence, and the annual spirit plaque, won by the juniors, was established. A predict-the-score contest and class spirit chain competition provided special outlets for arousing the fans. A roar could be heard on 72nd Street everytime the cheerleaders did class cheers. A good team, a good group of spectators, and a dedicated cheerleading squad - these were the ingredients that made up spirit of '75-'76. 53 f . i2Hts12IZ:3f' A 1 . , . f fff im 4 . . ng Q W ., . .-Ez ::a'S': ,itz-' Z . The floor show is impressive but the behind-the- scenes work is what takes the most time. Making posters, learning chants, and practicing mounts eat up hours of a cheerleader's week, but it all becomes worthwhile at time outs and quarters when the cheerleaders show their stuff? 55 Girls' Basketball The '75-'76 PT girls' basketball team can't boast of an excellent season. Instead, it was a year for gaining experience, learning plays, and trying to execute them. It was a year for gradually working up to tremendous potential and finally getting an act together. ,4-dvi' We 56 The girls' b-ball team probably has the toughest schedule of all Park teams. Faced with city champs like Tech and Ladywood, our cagers still put on a good show. A lack of height is a problem, but nevertheless, rebounding and jumping abilities can be gained through practice, even for short people. Team standouts include veteran players Mary Elder and Betsy Kunz, first year senior Sandy Eskenazi, and newcomer Janet Kloke. Freshman Liz Barney consistently brought down the rebounds, and the live of them together ,provided a balanced scoring attack. A 101-13 wipeout of Indiana Christian Academy showed Panther fans that, despite a lack of experience, the girls' team still has what it takes to make it happen. We have different backgrounds, different interests and different goals. But through the years, each class develops its own idiosyncrasies and its own style. The Freshies are the novices. They begin their high school career not knowing what to expect. They only know that they have four long tedious years ahead of them. Sophomores have it easy. The worries of the freshman year are . gone and the worries of the junior year have not come yet. But with the junior year come term papers, PSAT's, SAT's, and Achievements. Juniors long to be seniors to escape thepressures of their third high school year and often contract senioritis a year too early. College applications, acceptances, and rejections are char- acteristic of the senior year, as are the senior slump and the long-awaited senior privileges. But mixed feelings prevail during the senior year. Although Pomp and Cir- cumstance is in everyone's mind, they approach com- mencement night hesitantly, apprehensive of what is to come. The faculty are just as important as the students. Without them, there would be no one to discipline us, quiz us, fail us, or ask us to take the record player back to the library. Without them, we would never find the hyperboles and hyperbolas. Even after reflection, we can't really say who we are. Just ordinary people? No. We a-re the people of Park-Tudor School. 62 , f-V l -gg, V 1 . f m1.I1f2g.qa, Nitfgf-.rf f W' K ' 1 1 4 1 2 SENIORS Is it art yet? Students start to learn to work with their hands and their minds in the kindergarten, and continue this learning in everything from painting and sculpturing to writing and memorizing a spelling list in the higher grades. It is often hard to make those scissors cut in the right way, or make that problem come out right at first, but with the help of a teacher, or a friend, work can almost always be fun, and satisfying. It is still sometimes nice to reach the end of the day, though. 104 5, 3, L r 105 I -3... -...Q-'-. 1 ..,.,. XM 3' ,. w-M . N-m,,,m - -W' . ,M - N M.. If you feel like jumping or sliding, or racing, or getting dizzy, the play ground is the place to go. But there is always a quiet corner in which to just sit and talk, also. A mixture of work and play can be found in the athletics of the lower school. True, this is where the varsity team players of the future start, but they also practice for contests and awards of their own, especially Field Day, in October. At Field Day boys and girls each compete in their own age group, and whether or not they win ribbons and trophies, everyone has fun. 107 David Belford Dana Bennett Beth Berkeley Qs if ,, it W is Bob Black Evrard Borgerhoff Julie Browning Beth Brueckmann fv- fm- CN sq.- 1 'W Greg Butz Allan Chorpenning David Compton John Crawford Charles Culp Susan Dexter Boyd Edwards John Freiberger Dede Grosfeld Alan Hoyt c Sn vi ...r ml , 'ff f ' av Q aaiaszrilf-?f'fM ' 1 if 1: w'wfl1 !id-S'?'f 11' M ffirrlf S1 g4,i:gWg , ,',.,,w Win-Y 7 3 t.w3,,n,t:, H. tw My -,,.
