THE FRIESHME O O O David Duck Dave played guard in basket- ball and football and won his reserve numerals in both of these sports. He is playing left field on the Varsity baseball team. Dave has made the honor roll once this year. Jess Pritchett Jess took part in the fall tennis program and was awarded the second-place medal. He received his basketball numerals as a for- ward and is playing baseball this spring. He is a member of the Student Council. Larry Folse Larry won both his football and basketball numerals this year, and he is a member of the Varsity baseball team this spring. He portrayed Harkins in Eleven Against the Seo. He is a member of the Prompter's Club. Jim Rose As end on the football team Jim earned his reserve numerals. He also earned basketball num- erals. This spring, Jim is on the tennis squad. David Huncilman Dave was assistant football manager last fall. In the winter he took part in the boxing and wrestling program under Mr. Holzman. He is taking tennis this spring under the some in- structor. Homer Sams Buddy has been at Park since the first of March. He played a little basketball and he is now engaged in spring tennis. Since coming to Park, Homer has made commendable academic prog- ress. Melvin Isaac Melvin could not participate in basketball but did play reserve football. He has contributed several piano solos to our chapel services at the school, and for the Garden Tour he exhibited a large collection of military in- signia. Frank Snyder Frank was on the reserve foot- ball team this fall. During the winter he boxed, and this spring he is playing tennis. Alan Johnson As tackle on the football team Alan received his numer- als. Many of Alan's themes have been published in the Red and Black. In baseball he plays out- field. Fred Thorpe Fred came to Park in Febru- ary and was unable to partici- pate in the winter sports pro- gram. This spring, however, he is taking tennis. David Poston Dave is participating in spring tennis. He was a member of the stage crew for the all-school play and is a member of the Prompter's club. Peter Weldon Pete won his reserve numerals this fall by playing football. He has written many articles for the Red and Black and is also a member of the Panther staff. Pete took second place in the Optimists' Club speaking contest. He is taking baseball this spring. SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADES CMIDDLE SCHOOLJ Mr. Smith, as Director of the Middle School, is proud of the excellent spirit of cooperation which his boys have shown through the year. Their Middle School Student Council, led by President Don Hines and advised by Mr. Higgins, sponsored two parties, and they sold cokes, candy, and hot dogs at varsity foot- ball and basketball games. Seventh graders organized a stamp club and operated the Bust a Balloon booth in the carnival. Eighth graders contributed a ball-throwing game at the carnival and maintained a discussion club known as the C. O. L., which attended a Purdue football game. Michael Bradner, of the eighth grade, drew the prize-winning cover for the Garden Tour calendar. FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADES This year Mr. Holzman took the fifth and sixth graders on tours to the Sherwood coal mines, the Goethe Link Observatory, the Naval Armory, and P. R. Mallory's. The boys were respon- sible for raising the flag on the campus each morning. At the carnival the fifth graders operated a game in which the prizes were phonograph records donated by Mr. Roy Price of R. C. A., and the sixth graders set up the Chamber of Horrors. Mrs. Mitchell's chorus sang in the gymnasium during the Garden Tour, at which the sixth grade presented a model of a jungle scene. FIRST AND SECOND GRADES The main boast of our first and second grades is that, under the capable guidance of Mrs. Burns, they have made unusually rapid progress in reading and in numbers. By playing grocery store last 'Fall in their classroom, they learned to add up a list of prices and to make change, and in the carnival they sold balloons. The first and second grade farm exhibit at the gym- nasium during the Garden Tour attracted a great deal of attention. Student Council Left to right: Mr. Gene Schwilck Richard McCrae, Jess Pritchett Philip Whitesell, Reed Moistner John Esterline, Edward Hargitt, John DeVoe. , The president of our student council is John De- , Voe, the secretary, Reed Moistner, the treasurer, , Ed. Hargitt, and the corresponding secretary is John Esterline. Mr. GeneSchwilck is their faculty adviser who has made this year's student council the most successful in many years. The services of the council to the school are many. At the beginning of the school year a Pump Handle get-together was arranged for all parents and students. Other duties included daily flag raising, as- sembly program, pep rallies, and a successful drive for attendance at the basketball games. The charities helped were the Salvation Army at Thanksgiving and the Community Chest drive, and 5400 was raised for the Red Cross at the benefit carnival given iointly by Tudor Hall and Park. An- other important activity was the magazine drive, which earned S325 for the school. His staf? consists of Phil Whitesell, Managing Editor, Dick McCrae, Copy Manager, Business Manager Charles Pollock, Feature Editor Reed Moistner, News Editor John Esterline, Sports Editor Samps McQuiston, Steve Cline, Circula- tion Manager, and Mr. Carrico, the Faculty Adviser. Throughout the school year the Red and Black stat? has increased the paper's popularity. Because of the attendance of Jerry Slatin, Phil Whitesell, Dick Mc- Crae, and Charles Pollock at a Press Conference for high school paper managers at Franklin College, the staf? have had an easier job of running our school paper. THE PANTHER The Park School Yearbook was edited by Samps McQuiston, with the help of George Downing and Steve Cline. Since early in January the staf? has been working diligently getting the Panther into its present form. Dr. Johnson has served as Faculty Adviser. THE PROMPTER'S CLUB This year the Prompter's Club produced the play Eleven Against the Sea, which drew a large audi- ence and much applause. With the talented assistance of Mr. Hodson, who painted backgrounds, and Mr. Carrico and Mr. Watkins, co-di- rectors, the play went of? very smoothly. Officers of the club are Dick Travis, president, Charles Pollock, secretary-treasurer. Mr. Carrico is the faculty adviser. VARSITY CLUB The President of the Varsity Club is Jerry Slatin, and the Secretary- Treasurer is Phil Whitesell. PRO,-xC'.f'1lx Qqn x'-9 f00TBAll Park School had a short season in football, but they won one game out of three. Park's first defeat was administered by Cincinnati Country Day, 39 to 0. In the next game, Park defeated Ohio Military Academy, 25 to 0. In the last game Glenwood School defeated Park, 40-0. Steve Cline iniured his leg in the third practice of the season, and was unable to play. This unfortunate accident weakened the team, and with the inexperienced, Park had a bad season. Jerry Slatin was voted the Reichel Award for the best mental attitude, and John DeVoe was named honorary captain. In the last game with Glenwood School, Steve DeVoe was sick and not able to play. That is not all that hap- pened. Jack Schwomeyer went out of the game with a fractured wrist, and George Downing was taken out after getting hit in the chest. Varsity letters were given to the following boys: Gerald Slatin, David Young, Samps McQuiston, Philip Whitesell, Ed. Hargitt, Charles Pollock, George Downing, Steve DeVoe, Dick McCrae, Jack Schwomeyer. Numerals were given to the following boys: Pete Wel- don, Melvin Issac, Steve Cline, Larry Folse, Reed Moistner. We must not forget the most important one of them all- the boy that takes care of all the dirty clothes and takes all the complaining from the boys. He may not be on the field working, but in his way he is working iust as hard as anyone else. Who else but John Esterline? SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE FOOTBALL The Seventh and Eighth grade football team, although they had only thirteen candidates, started the season off with a bang by thumping Pike Township by the score of I8-6. The Park touchdowns in this game were scored by Phil Adler, Mike Bradner, and Steve Medios. Park lost their next two regular season games to Pike Township and Orchard School. Then they played Louisville Country Day School in the big game of the season. Park iumped off to an early 6-O lead on a pass play from Dave Duck to Duane Pritchett, but the superior amount of Louis- ville manpower paid off in the end I8-6. FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADE FOOTBALL This year's team won three games from our arch-rival Orchard, while losing two contests to Tarkington Park. This was the first time a Park team had whipped Orchard three times straight. The boys were aggressive and gained much ex- perience. Coach Higgins awarded seventeen football awards to these young athletes. l l l s BASKETBALL PARK FIVE- Park started off with a big hit this year, winning nine straight games. At the time, Park was the only undefeated team in the city. Finally we came through with a 18-4 record. The team brought back to the school a hand- some trophy. ln order to keep the trophy, a school must win it three times. The boys have said that they will bring the trophy back to Park next year for a second time. Seated left to right: Ralph Walrod, Steve DeVoe, John De- Voe, Richard McCrae, George Down- ing. Not shown in picture: John Esterline, Mgr. John DeVoe was rated the best high school basketball player in the city. With his 31.8 points per game John was far ahead of all other players. We wish that he could be back next year. Steve and John DeVoe were chosen honorary co-captains for the season of 1951-1952. The Reichel award was given to George Downing. lt is an award presented to the player with the best mental attitude. The Park School Fathers' club donated to the Park basket- ball team new telescopic bleachers that fold up against the wall. We would like to congratulate the team on having such a fine record. my f Standing left to right: Coach Se- ward Wilshere, Thomas Howard, Peter Weldon, Charles Pollock, Larry Folse, Jess Pritchett, Coach Jack Baker. Seated left to right: David Duck, Alan Johnson, Philip Whitesell, Edward Hargitt, David Young. 3 uns' gr with RESERVE BASKETBALL The reserve basketball squad, led by Phil Whitesell, Dave Young, Reed Moistner, Steve Cline, and Samps McQuiston, had a rough schedule, and not till the final three games did they ever show they were both offensively and defen- sively strong. Outside of the four first stringers, the squad was inexperienced, but everyone was eager to fill the fifth-man spot, since Cline was recalled to Varsity duty. David Duck and Jim Rose were two of the hardest fighters for this position. Midway through the season the Parksters showed that they could win even if it was in the cracker box gym of Elgin Academy. This was their first win of the season. The last two games were decisive victories for the reserve squad, and showed that the Varsity squad next year will be strengthened greatly by these boys. SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE BASKETBALL Standing left to right, John Stiles, Tim Kelly, Mgr., David Fauvre, Coach Jack Baker, Mike Bradner, John Weldon. Seated left to right: Thomas Dalglish, Stuart Schaefer, Philip Adler, Steve Medias, Howard Pontius, Duane Pritchett. SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE BASKETBALL The T951-52 basketball team of the seventh and eighth grades, although it lacked both size and manpower, managed to score two victories as against five losses during the course of the season. Under the capable direction of Mr. Jack Baker, the boys gained much valu- able experience and will contribute substantially to many fine Park basketball teams in the future. The starting line-up consisted of Tom Dalglish, Tom Esterline, David Fauvre, Steve Medias, and Duane Pritchett. FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADE BASKETBALL The team finished with a breeze, winning three games in a row after they had suffered eight losses. Team members included Jock Fortune, Henry Whitesell, Jay Price, Jack Keller, Walter Foltz and Jack Mead. Foltz was able to play in only the last three games, but he scored sixteen points. The team was scrappy and showed a lot of spirit. L Standing left to right: Robert Giblin, Richard Wilson, Gaylor Kasle, Coach William Higgins, Walter Foltz, Thomas Howe. Lowell Johnston, who had been playing second base for the last two years, was not very big, but he was one of the best hitters that Park had. Jerry Slatin, playing in his second year as a starter, covered shortstop. Jerry's specialty was fielding ground balls. Samps McQuiston, a newcomer to Park, played third base. Steve Cline, Tom Kahn and Bill Cooley were throwing from the mound. This was Tom's last year at Park. Tommy, a right hander, gave the opposing batters something to think about. Behind the plate was Steve Colwell, one of the best baseball players Park ever had. The outfielders were Johnny DeVoe, Dave Williams and Paul Colwell. VARSITY TENNIS Lett to right: John DeVoe, Steve DeVoe, Ralph Walrod, Richard Mc- Crae, John Esterline. Not shown in picture: Coach John Holzman. f JPX K X Cixi With two returning lettermen and a good group of prospects, the tennis squad is looking forward to its best season. John DeVoe, now number one in the state, and Steve DeVoe, who also ranks very high, fill the number one and number two spots excellently. Lack of experience is the only serious handicap of Ralph Walrod, John Ester- line, and Dick McCrae, who hold the number three, four, and tive spots, alternating in the positions. The squad has a new coach this year, Mr. John Holzman, who has coached several fine teams in Wisconsin. The team is being pushed a little harder than in previous years and has taken on a tough schedule, including Tech, Cathedral, Broad Ripple, and Shortridge.
