Some members of this ship's complement have been aboard since its maiden voyage, others have transferred from different vessels in re- cent years. For some it is the only berth ever knowng for others it is the last among several. Old-timers or newcomers, however, they all share one knowledge: how thoughtful the design, how considerate the workmanship, how unique the ship. Unique in its lack of a captain. A captain? Not even a petty oflicer! For every member of this crew is'his own commanding ofhcer. The skill with which he commands himself is evidence of the extent to which he has understood the rules of the ship. So, too, is every man aboard his own navigator. What more important nautical accomplishment? Intricate its design, complete its workmanship, for it has provided room in its table of organization for everything from a political orator to a violinist. And together they have had the thrill of flung spray and the blown spume . And together they have known the delight of the cloudless sky and the pacific sea and the depression of the harassed traveler. Now the training cruise ends, the craft puts into drydock. The crew dis- bands and its members go their separate ways to new assignments, to new vessels. Many watch them, waiting hopefully. Sincerely, QQ7' ROBERT A. THOMASON 9
