Park School is like a small tugboat -leading and guiding them along their course through life. As the years flow by, with knowledge and experience, this craft transforms it- self to a streamlined vessel. For some, the journey through Park will be calmg others will experience numerous hazards, but all will emerge as adults capable of success- fully continuing their voyages. 4 FIRE T MA TEX A 1 L ,. H! Mr. Robert A. Thomason Miss Martha E. Hunt THE CREW The Class of 1957 5 Jin fllllvmnriam We respectfully dedicate this volume to the memory of Miss Margaret Fulton Coe, esteemed member of the Park School family for almost forty years. Although her good qualities were immeasurable, Miss Coe instilled them in each person-teacher and student- whom she met during a school day. As friend and advisor to every child, she believed that every person needs to know . . . he is a valuable human being. Miss Coe had many opportunities to further her career elsewhere, yet her strict adherence to Park School's prin- ciples induced her to remain. Her warm Hello! brightened each person's day, and her influence made everyone a little happier and a little better. 7 ' 2 'Ni I, x .1 1 1:-.X 1 N1r. Robert A. For some it is the only berth ever knowng for others it is the last among several. Old-timers or newcomers, however, they all share one knowledge: how thoughtful the design, how considerate the workmanship, how unique the ship. Unique in its lack of a captain. A captain? Not even a petty oflicer! For every member of this crew is'his own commanding ofhcer. The skill with which he commands himself is evidence of the extent to which he has understood the rules of the ship. So, too, is every man aboard his own navigator. What more important nautical accomplishment? Intricate its design, complete its workmanship, for it has provided room in its table of organization for everything from a political orator to a violinist. And together they have had the thrill of flung spray and the blown spume . And together they have known the delight of the cloudless sky and the pacific sea and the depression of the harassed traveler. Now the training cruise ends, the craft puts into drydock. The crew dis- bands and its members go their separate ways to new assignments, to new vessels. Many watch them, waiting hopefully. Sincerely, QQ7' ROBERT A. THOMASON 9 'S I. , Q. .' We have learned to work together, and now I have signed your final papers. I will stick to this ship and break in a new crew, but you will start your new assignments on new ships-all going to different ports, places I have never seen, seas we have never charted for you. You are prepared. You have learned to tie and coil ropes, you can holystone decks, you can read charts, and you navigate any ocean. You can please any bosun or first mate anywhere. When you report to your new ships next fall, just remember the crabby old First Mate is depending on all of you to be the best sailors -and seamen she has ever sent on to better jobs. Your papers are in order. Step lively for tomorrow we part! Sincerely, 777e7r7hri f,77w?LV v MARTHA E. HUNT 16 OUR AD VIS ER Miss Martha E. Hunt We can still remember our first meeting when you stressed the necessity of settling down and acquainting ourselves with hard work, for we would have to realize the part we should play in Park School. Now that those years have rapidly drawn to a close We realize the significance of these Words. No matter how busy you were, you always left your office door open for counselling and friendly chats. Realizing the variety of our class, you helped us each to find our places-some as skippers, others as navigators, and still more as able seamen. And when we strayed off course, your able hand and compass steered us into calmer channels. Now, as the gangplank rises and you turn the steering wheel over to each member of the class of 1957, we thank you for all you have done for us, and We hope that We may make you proud of us in forth- coming journeys. 17 1 1'- , F ,Ni V -flxx law 1 I 7101. -Qifinli Jjgl , ' - Q f . -.- ' I- AA ,,,,-. -.. Although soccer is foot- ball in England, Tom plays well for the Park team. Posscssing one of the heartiest appetites in the class, he is a non-believer in the old tradition of tea and crumpets. Tom can't miss success in the best English tradition. RENLE BRA VMANN Does the name Rene Bravmann ring a bell with you? If not, dial O and ask for the gym, where you will find him managing the fresh-soph basketball team. When he answers, ask him about his work on the literary staff of the Brownie. She's the only person who can make beautiful music come from a Park School piano. She strikes a high note as a cheerleader, while her French is in the highest octave. And Judy was a tunable secretary in her junior year. That isn't all-she sings, too! l Sw. ALICE HELEN ROXEN The Nobel Prize for literary accom- plishment goes to Alice Rosen. Anyone who doubts this statement has only to look at the Brownie. Alice, a fairly recent find, rose to popularity as co-editor of the Post- script. She received several honorable men- tions in sports, in glee club, and in art. Alice's interest in johns Hopkins University led her to write her thesis on this subject. She did a fine job in investigating the topic in all its phases. Her critics are unanimous in predicting success! i' ,. in HARRIET PR OXTIC With a loud splash Harriet quickly swims across the pool. She dives from the water to the snack bar. Suddenly the lead in the Founder's Day play splashes through and begs for help with costumes. Harriet im- mediately plunges in to help-with cos- tumes or first aid. In other words, whenever there is a job, Harriet swimmingly completes it to everyone's satisfaction. She will make a big splash in life as well as in the pool. it MICHAEL ALAN BETH-HILLEL XHURE A sporting member of the class, Michael arrived in the sophomore year. He rushed to be an active member of the class and reached his goal as chairman of the junior dance. He scored points as co-captain of the soccer team as well as on the varsity basketball and lacrosse squads and made an excellent assist as co-chairman of the rummage sale. But with so much to do, Mike still finds tim o tally high among his many friends. QQ ta T' Wifffiif A U If l M -i A' I s'!, 6fNQwQ'gf,jc 0 VV I ,vw L7 MJ I-L il uf' C1 if QA rw 29 is -Nf- we A-1 x.! CHRIXTIANE FLORET Nothing has done so much to promote good will between France and the United States as France's la plus jeune ambassador, Christiane Floret. She immediately became part of our class and lent a helping hand in many ways. While adjusting to America, Christiane helped us to understand why we live the way we do and how to interpret our way of life abroad. We hope that she had only le meilleur to say of us when she re- turned to France, for all we can say is, Christiane is tres bien in any language. Ecu-1 1 filfvuzx. Her first line is Council President, but paragraphs would hardly rhetoricize her dramatic and athletic achievements. We don't want to be wordyg however, it takes more than a sentence to prove that Paige's qualities of leadership and organization are both positive and superlative. Phrasing the effect of her trip to France in defining her character is difficult. This year the council undertook various projects and succeeded in all. The adoption of a foreign child, Antonio Monteleone, and the annual Thanks- giving food basket for a needy family are Park School traditions which proved successful. In addition, two new projects took effect. The organization of cheer leading and the new school affiliation program aided in promoting spirit both at home and abroad. The combined student body worked to its fullest capacity and accomplished a considerable amount of work during 1956 and 1957. BOARD OF DIRECTORS i QL 55 d Lindne o f f Pete Hamburger. . . .. .. Block prints, more art work, and better typewriters enhanced its appearance. THE POSTSCRIPT In an altogether successful year, the Posfsvrifwl underwent great changes in its composition. Professionally printed for the first time, the paper has a much more legible, attractive format. lt has also used photographs for the first time. No longer will the junior class elect the editorial staff. From now on, the editors will come from people who have previously worked on the paper. The Postscript became a council committee, open to the entire school, rather than a junior-class project. P. S. STAFF . . . .. ...,...... Putnam Playshop experimented with a new system. From September through Christmas vacation the group split into four equal divisions. Miss Van Order, Mr. Tompkins, Mr. Russell, and Mrs. Kurland headed respectively the Stage Design, Building, Dramatics, and Costume Divisions. Every three weeks the fifteen members of each group rotated until eventually each person had participated in all activities. The officers as well as faculty and Playshop members feel that this program has been extremely valuable. Besides being a learning experience in itself, this system aids in teaching our group something about evry facet of play production. The basic theory of Playshop this year has been the belief that learning comes from sharing knowledge. Every month we held a general meeting during which each com- mittee told the group its plans for our Founders Day Play. We produced She Sfoops To Conquer, an eighteenth-century play by Oliver Goldsmith. As in previous years, we had six committees, headed by studcntsfwhich functioned according to designated jobs. 58 OFFICERS Sue Jacobson .,...,. ....,,. P resxdcn Phyllis Blum . . . Not only was the morale, spirit, and sportsmanship better, but the group won more games than it lost. Upper school participation in inter-murals added to the enjoyment of the sport. The final success came when two girls made the All Baltimore Hockey Team and one received honorable mention. SOCCER Park dropped from the M.S.A. in soccer and played on an independent schedule. Wfith the necessary improvements over the previous year, the team's enthusiasm and renewed spirit produced scores in every contest and no losses greater than one goal. The top players of each of the two ladders will play singles and doubles matches for the school tournaments. The team is looking forward to an enjoyable, successful season. At the time of publication, the boys, lacrosse team has played only one non-league and two scrimmage games. The strong opposition of the M.S.A. varsity league has already handicapped Park and has unfortunately resulted in a lack of enthusiahm and necessary drive. For the first time in its history, Park School has had organized cheer leading. At the beginning of the term Roxy Schrieber brought the idea before the council for its support. With a unanimous vote to back this new enterprise, the long-awaited vision took form. After a shaky start eleven girls shaped into a well organized cheering squad. Throughout the entire school they have stimulated enthusiasm and spirit. Checring has inspired the teams to more victories. ' .. 69 GY nr. L. -Q. ,A 1:-1' ., ',. 9 Q J 0 .1 .N X . X X , 'x- ii -9.17 ,N When the seniors' ship first embarked on its voyage, we knew not its destination. Its young, inexperienced crew members slowly learned from their wise, seasoned officers how to use their compasses and rudders. Now the navigators say that Hrst port is approaching. These sailors must depart, new ones will replace them. However, their course is still incomplete, they have merely plotted their stopping points. Where lies the land to which the ship would go? Far, far ahead, is all her seamen know. And where the land she travels from? Away, Far, far behind is all that they can say. by Arthur Hugh Clough Where Lies the Land 75 71 , ?
