Choice und No Choice llROBABl.Y all your life you will be reviewing your childhood and your early education. All thoughtful people do, to their own advantage and to the advantage of their children. This review can be an advantage to educational thinking. too. Here is a slant on Park School, l955, for your review in your tomorrows. You have had so many choices to make at school! Shall I do this? Shall I do this now? or when? How shall l proceed? Shall I fight my work. or shall I make it part of me? is history meat and drink for me? or mathe- matics or science or art? What is mine and me, and what is alien? Shall I land how shall ii serve the community of lny school? lf our invitations to you are pointed and strong. that is what your teachers and I in- tended. The choices are intended. too, be- cause choosing is of a piece with growing. It is making your opportunities and your experience into purposes that are your own. Choosing is learning to know the kind of per- son that you are-is choosing the kind of person you are going to be. One choice we omitted. believing. later. you would think us right. Always we have ex- pected you to be responsible. Suggesting that you do small things for all when you your- self were small was meant to let you know you counted. you belonged. lixpecting that you advance. each year. in the habit and the scope of your responsibility-that was more of the same and much more than that. The world esteems most precious those to whom responsibility and living are the same. Years away, strangers will look to you to be paid up and fully participating citizens. Those who are practiced expect this and are ready. They are of very great importance. Their pleasures are the greatest and deepest even though their work be arduous. Therefore. here no choice we have believed. How right were we in 1955? How right for you? Head this. your book, in ten years and in twenty. Then ask yourself these ques- tions.
