And they did whisper one with another, awakening deep in the breasts of the Seniors, sundry feeling of curiosity. At this time did one of their most beloved classmates make her departure to a distant city, to a place of new abode and comrades, Katherine of the house of Akers, a maiden of winning and sweet demeanor. And the silver-footed Hours did swiftly bring the seventeenth day of the third month, and youths and maidens did flock to the scene of festivity, even to the celebration in the Seniors' honor. Now, until late into the evening did fair maidens flit about amid the white and golden draperies, in like manner as the butter- flies do flit amid the green draperies of Spring. And they did make merry to the music of the charmed minstrelsgthus did they,youths and maidens of both tribes,Seniors and Juniors. Now it happened as the days did pass, the Juniors did turn themselves to new thoughts for they did desire insignia of their fellowshipg then straightway did they ob- tain heavy rings of fine gold to be worn alike by the youths and maidens, to show the bond among the tribesmen. Now, Minerva caused the months to fly swiftly. And under the leadership of their chieftain Douglas of the house of McCully, the Juniors did bound for- ward from one success to another, even as a ship doth breast the waves under the hand of her captain. Now, when the time was come that the Juniors should return from their sojourn dur- ing the months of summer, a dread pestilence did become rife in all the country round a- bout. And it did linger seizing many victims, even as the raven spreading his shadowy wings doth gloat upon his prize. And the Juniors in the sympathy of their hearts were sore stricken, although the dread evil did not come nigh them. Now, not until the morn of the second day of the tenth month did the halls resound with the sound of returning footsteps. And the Juniors did with exceeding dignity take unto themselves the scepter accorded them as Seniorsg and therewith did begin to exercise a gentle yet prevailing sway over their fellow-tribes. And the fame of their knowledge and ability did spread abroad among all peoples, for they did exceed all others even as an oak in its might doth tower above the other trees of the forest. Now, they did number four and thirty, albeit one of their comrades, Ruby of the household of.Meschutt, did betake herself unto a far-off city, there to live with other kinsman, for even within that very fortnight did another maiden link herself unto the seniors, Marie, a daughter of the race 0f Dexter. Now, inasmuch as the Seniors in the broadness of their minds did with exceeding vigor espouse the rights of women, did they select unto themselves a chieftain of the fairer sex, Evelyn of the flaxen tresses, a daughter of the house of Desmond. Furthermore did they choose insignia: as colors, gold and old blue, as a fiower, the blue and golden fieur-de-lis. These deeds did greatly please Minerva and she did crown with success every- thing to which they did turn their minds.

And when Apollo did wheel his chariot nearer the earth and did bend his warmest beams upon it, then did the Freshmen leave their place in the halls of learning, having won many laurels for wisdom and prowess. Now, upon the fourth day of the ninth month, the chief ruler over the halls of learning did announce a gathering of all the tribes. And the Freshmen, now in number four and fifty, did rejoice in that they had been given the rank of Sophomores, for they had grown stronger both in mind and dignity. And the halls did ring with their praises as, with the sword of Perseverance given them by Minerva, they did hew down all obstacles and surmount all difficulties. And it happened that Roland of the shy demeanor did not heed the call to assemble and did not return with the tribe of Sophomores, therefore, did they select unto themselves another chieftain, Merrell of the sturdy stature, favored both of Mars and Minerva. And the months did vanish as the snow before the sunshine, bringing with them both the dreaded examinations and the welcome vacation. Then did the tribe of Sopho- mores with one accord cast off restriction as an outgrown garment and with exceeding ex- uberance did disport themselves as lambs upon the hillside, but their well-won laurels did they cherish as tokens from Minerva. Now when time like a ravenous Wolf had devoured the months of summer, the tribe in number two and forty did again heed the call to the halls of learning, having won for themselves by the right of wisdom and prowess the higher rank of Juniors. Then did they make rapid strides in the pursuits of knowledge, glad at heart as victors in a battle albeit they had lost two of their fellow-classmates, Norman of the race of Lilliputians and Roland of the house of Willenbucher. Now it happened that the Juniors as they increased in wisdom, in like manner did they increase in good will toward their exceeding prosperity. Therefore, when the great White Father over the entire nation did proclaim a day of Thanksgiving, they and the other tribes did bring of their abundance, aye, food of gootl savor, to give to those upon whom fortune had not so kindly smiled. And the Juniors did give from their coffers five golden dollars in the fullness of their hearts. But alas! even in the midst of the joy of their success, they were sore stricken, for upon one of their number was laid the finger of God and he did sleep, a youth, noble both of mind and character, Russellof the house of Van Nostrand. Now, even as the sun doth draw water from the dry earth, even so did Juniors absorb knowledge from their books, basking in the favor of the gracious Minerva. And,when Spring did again array the earth in new garments and the tribe of Seniors did prepare to leave the halls of learning, the Juniors did prepare a celebration in their honor. And they did busy themselves with exceeding vigor after they had with much

24 ,fljliffs rr-ills 11 lfzjfka Now, it happened that the Juniors did heed the precedent which had long been estab- lished and did proclaim a feast in honor of the Seniors. This celebration did take place upon the twenty-second day of thetwelfth monthgani the Seniors were mindful of the fact that whereas they had once been the entertainers, they were now those to whom all deference was due as upperclassmen. And the tribe of Seniors did look forward to the time when they should leave the halls of learning, for they did burn with a desire to surpass all former efforts in the manner of commencement. Forthwith did the chief ruler over the halls of learning and each Mentor, expound the need for energetic, united action. Now, whenever this subject did find utterance the ideas of the Seniors did take wing to parts unknown and their minds did be- come much unsettled even as the uncertain weather of April. But they were not unmind- ful of the need of money, that obstacle which did on every side confront them. To this purpose, did the chieftain call many gatherings of the tribe and when many thoughts had found expression, they did devise a method of raising revenue And each tribesman did of his substance gave two and one half golden dollars into the common coffers. Now, the Seniors, that tribe of many counsels, did turn to new thoughts, for they fain would leave to their successors records of their far-famed accomplishments. And the Mentors bade many elders of the tribe prepare scrolls for this purpose. Thereupon di.l the selected elders withdraw themselves from the gaiety of life and the spirits of dark ness did whisper of the scratching of many styluses and the broadcast consumption of midnight oil. As a result, numerous parchments did add themselves to this choice collection, record- ing the prowess of the Seniors in contests both of mind and body. Now, the Mentor of the Seniors did suggest for consideration before chosen bodies plans for a class play and for commencement, they did find favor and their lordly spirits consented thereto. And the Seniors did prepare for their many duties even as a warrior doth gird himself for battle or an athlete for the race, undertaking manifold projects which would reap much benefit. But each swiftly passing day did shorten the sojourn of this illustriois tribe in the ha'ls of learning, and their grief at leaving was as a grievous thorn in the fair laurels which did adorn their brows. Now in the sixth month the parting of the ways did come, the time when the tribe of Seniors must bid a last farewell to their Alma Mater, when they must assume the places in life which it was destined they should fill. But Minerva did instill courage into their hearts, and, in the youthful buoyancy of their spirits, they did step with hopefulness and determination upon that strange and unfamiliar threshold. And they did silently with one accord vow in their individual pathways of life to acquit themselves as men, to reap exceeding credit to their cherished High School, proving anew their tribe motto, wise and aptly chosen, Labor Conquers All . E
