Though exceeding calm to the eye, they did betray much inward quaking, ascending the steps and gazing about in the manner of strangers. Then straightway did the learned Mentors, with much confusion assemble, all the hordes inthe halls oflearningg and they declared their pedigrees after their families by the house of their fathers according to the number of names. And those that were numbered of them, even of the company of Freshmen, were as the blades of grass upon the hillside, in number two and sixty. Now upon the fourth day of their sojourn, did the Freshmen choose unto themselves a chieftain, both because of his goodly countenance and his smoothness in speaking, Julius of the house of Ronay. And the house did prosper, gaining many victories over their boastful enemies, the Sophomores, in football games and contests. And just as a glowing coal doth sizzle and sputter when cold water is poured upon it, in like manner did the Sophomores after every Freshman victory. And it happened upon the eleventh day of the eleventh month that the elders of the tribe of Freshmen did proclaim a gathering of the whole tribe. And they did make merry, of their own number choosing entertainers: two divine minstrels did evoke sweet music from their stringed instruments and a conjuror did make display of his arts, summoning strange and uncouth shapes to appear and in a mysterious manner calsing them to van- ish. Then straightway, fair maiilens placed before them plates of paper and china goblets, laying upon the board many dainties with which to tempt their palates. And they did stretch forth their han ls upon the good cheer set before them. Nnv when they had put from them the desire of meat and drink, they did go to the spaciods hall, there to tread many measures to the music of the charmed minstrels. And not until Artemis of the golden arrows did startupon her nightly journey, did the merry company disperse, each to his own dwelling. Now, the Freshmen did find great favor in the sight of Minerva and did astonish the Mentors with their brilliance. And when the fleeting days did bring the mid-year exam- inations, few did fail to satisfy the Mentors of their ex tee ling wisdom And in the first month of the New Year did the chieftain, Julius of the ruddy coun- tenance, separate himself from the tribe of Freshmen amid great lameatation, leaving forever the halls of learning. And the tribe did rise and with one accord did choose as chieftain the elder next in power, Roland of the shy demeanor. .

And when Apollo did wheel his chariot nearer the earth and did bend his warmest beams upon it, then did the Freshmen leave their place in the halls of learning, having won many laurels for wisdom and prowess. Now, upon the fourth day of the ninth month, the chief ruler over the halls of learning did announce a gathering of all the tribes. And the Freshmen, now in number four and fifty, did rejoice in that they had been given the rank of Sophomores, for they had grown stronger both in mind and dignity. And the halls did ring with their praises as, with the sword of Perseverance given them by Minerva, they did hew down all obstacles and surmount all difficulties. And it happened that Roland of the shy demeanor did not heed the call to assemble and did not return with the tribe of Sophomores, therefore, did they select unto themselves another chieftain, Merrell of the sturdy stature, favored both of Mars and Minerva. And the months did vanish as the snow before the sunshine, bringing with them both the dreaded examinations and the welcome vacation. Then did the tribe of Sopho- mores with one accord cast off restriction as an outgrown garment and with exceeding ex- uberance did disport themselves as lambs upon the hillside, but their well-won laurels did they cherish as tokens from Minerva. Now when time like a ravenous Wolf had devoured the months of summer, the tribe in number two and forty did again heed the call to the halls of learning, having won for themselves by the right of wisdom and prowess the higher rank of Juniors. Then did they make rapid strides in the pursuits of knowledge, glad at heart as victors in a battle albeit they had lost two of their fellow-classmates, Norman of the race of Lilliputians and Roland of the house of Willenbucher. Now it happened that the Juniors as they increased in wisdom, in like manner did they increase in good will toward their exceeding prosperity. Therefore, when the great White Father over the entire nation did proclaim a day of Thanksgiving, they and the other tribes did bring of their abundance, aye, food of gootl savor, to give to those upon whom fortune had not so kindly smiled. And the Juniors did give from their coffers five golden dollars in the fullness of their hearts. But alas! even in the midst of the joy of their success, they were sore stricken, for upon one of their number was laid the finger of God and he did sleep, a youth, noble both of mind and character, Russellof the house of Van Nostrand. Now, even as the sun doth draw water from the dry earth, even so did Juniors absorb knowledge from their books, basking in the favor of the gracious Minerva. And,when Spring did again array the earth in new garments and the tribe of Seniors did prepare to leave the halls of learning, the Juniors did prepare a celebration in their honor. And they did busy themselves with exceeding vigor after they had with much
