Foreword We, the Annual Staff of the 1958 Panther, present this book to you Mike. In looking over the pages, we hope you will always remember us, your classmates, friends, and teachers at P.R.l-l.S. 2 Dedication We, the Annual Staff of 1958 dedicate the '58 Panther to Mr. Richard Jones. He has not only been an excellent teacher, but also a friend who never tires of helping and advising us, whether we be 7th grader or senior. We, the seniors, appreciate his efforts in teaching us English, and for trying to make us better citizens for the world we will meet after graduation. We hope this will be a small reminder of our gratitude. 3 Layout Annual Staff LEFT to RIGHT: Karen Warner, Assistant Editor, Viviani Torkel- son, Editor. May they be included in the first un- Prophecy On July 4, 1980, Park Rapids is celebrating its own Centennial Year --- remember the Diamond Jubilee in 1955, with its giant spectacle of Panorama Pageantry, Parades, Carnivals, Reunions, Bands and all??? Looking down Main Street and around a few corners we see some good old landmarks still standing, namely, Schmider's Confectionery, the Park Theater, the Municipal Building, and even our good old Alma Mater. Driscoll's Bus Depot and the Great Northern Cafe must have given way to the new Monorail running through the city. Among the thousands of passengers arriving on the Monorail to join in the festivities of the once-in a-lifetime celebration were several members of the P.R.H,S, Class of '58. In spite of the ravages of Time, and riotous living through their magnetic personalities they were able to recognize each other and were soon gathered together busily discussing their Classmates and their achievements in the last 22 years. Without too much planning fas usualb the word quickly spread through the City and the whole Class got to- gether again for Old Time's Sake in Schmider's new Dance Studio -- fthe old Cad Garage locationj. JUDY GROVER and MARY PeKAREK, who are presently reporters on the PARK RAPIDS daily enterprise, spent a busy day and night gathering the following news items concerning our Classmates for a Special Edition honoring the Class of '58, As a result of their diligence, we are happy to submit the following facts: KAREN WARNER is now a top fashion designer for the successors of Dior in Paris, France. Her most successful model VIVIAN TORKELSON recently experienced a tragedy. She opened her beach bag to get her bathing suit and found nothing but three moths - - all dead from malnutrition. The Toast of the Continent, LURAINE BREEZEE has lately been outdoing Mike Todd with her lavish parties. Performing daily on station EGAD, Park Rapids' own TV Station, are BILLY ROBERTS and EARL NYLAND, Bill lectures on the importance of poetry and Earl on sentence structure. Every ten minutes JUDY UETZMAN breaks in with a commercial for Hotzie Tissues -- They come in colors, ROGER HANSEN gave up his position as janitor-about -town and went into partnership with DAVID BRAMMANN They run the Blinkety Blank Motor Company. The company now owns two trucks and a baby carriage. HAROLD GIESER achieved great fame in his study of Law. He boasts that he never lost a single case in his practice. It is believed that he bribes the jury with his dazzling smiles. GAIL YOUNG is Chief Assistant to Mr. Jones and spends her spare minutes revising Mother Goose Rhymes. GERALD SUNDSRUD is employed by the IDA BISEK BUSCUIT COMPANY, His value to her as a trainer of animal crackers is inestimable. As GARY GROVER, King of'Slobovia, gazes lazily out his palace window he spies his faithful window washer, CHUCK ROBERTSON, gazing lazily back at him. SHARON BENSON and DARLA NICHOLS, the inseparable two, are now running a guinea pig farm on the out- skirts of Arago. PAT THELEN manicures their toenails and AVICE PRITCHARD cleans their ears daily. MEL SCHMITZ and EDWARD WILKINS are happy that prohibition was repealed. They went into the bottling business, but were so generous in sampling their wares that they never got the business on a paying basis. The former JEAN FORSYTHE has just arrived back in the States with her plate lipped Ubangi husband from Africa. The rumor is that on the flight to Park Rapids he took a shine to the stewardess who was none other than our own ELEANOR KOCH, After divorcing her sixth husband LORNA PAPE has decided that a goldfish makes the best household compan- ion. It needs to be fed only once in three days and she always knows where he is and what he's doing. ROGER DISSMORE and TERRY SIEGFORD have formed a See the World Club and they take turns spinning the globe. ERVIN MELCHERT, a street cleaner was recently fired for day-dreaming -- he cou1dn't keep his mind in the gutter. Our school teachers ELMINA BARG, RITA MOHR, BARBARA STILLINGS and RONALD WILSON, have a new method of disciplining students who skip. They consulted the local Child Psychologist, SANDRA MAAS, and found out that twenty lashes with a wet noodle was the proper treatment. DOUGLAS EVERHART, former Chief Auctioneer among the Eskimos in Labrador for 22 years, recently broke the ice -- not only did he rub noses with an Eskimo, he married one! JEAN JARVIMAKI's name has gone down in history as the inventor of a Mathematics requiring no brain power to solve it. RALPH HANSON is now running for United States Congressman. He is one of the distinguished politicians of the state. . 22 We found that CAROL TORKELSON and VERNA PRITCHETT have taken over a ranch in New Mexico for the purpose of taming jack rabbits. They want the cooperation of all the cowboys! Park Rapids' new 13-story hospital has a staff of employees including several from the Class of '58. SHARON I-IOLMER, DIANE PATCHIN and PHYLLIS SCHAUER are Receptionists. SANDRA SCHACKMAN, ALICE RUGG and SHARON HENSEL are the Medical Technicians. And JULIE SPENCER, EDITH HOEFS and JOANNE GOULD are among the Nurses. The Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. SHARON RIDER, has three very capable Secretaries: LAVONNE TERHARK, JOYCE DUERR and MARY ALICE BECKER. The world-famous DI. SUZANNE NUNN has suc- ceeded in reaching the top in the field of Brain Surgery. Ponsford is now in the process of building a monument in her honor which will be located in the City Square. One of the highlights of the day's celebration was the crowning of the new Rolling-Pin Queen, SHARON ROONEY, There seems to be some discussion of the fairness of the judging by WILBERT HONGA and BARRIE SPENCER, The two runner-ups, KAY SMITH and NANCY WINSKOWSKI think it was unjust because Sharon gets to practice every night on LEON SMIENS, DAVID Tweety ANDERSON has just succeeded in changing his middle name -- he always did dislike Syl- vester. A much-traveled bum, HARRY FRAZEE, has reached the moon. He stowed away on a Sputnik. JUDY HARSHA has invented, after much experimenting, her own Tone-Down-Yourself machine to use when she gets mad. JEAN FLETCHER and CHARLOTTE SCHNEIDER, now outstanding Beauticians, recently discovered a new Ten- Minute Magic Facial Beautifierj' It's only imperfection is that it lasts just ten minutes. DEAN SCHMITZ is employed at NATALIE NORMAN's Beach as a life guard. He can't swim but he can wade MAVIS MALM and BOB DAVIS are now married and residing in a metropolis of the West, Ponsford. They are kept busy feeding their many blessings day by day. LOIS MADSEN and BETTE OLSON are running a reducing salon which is located in the space between Meyer's Bakery and Collins Cafe. Their slender figures advertise the success of their venture. IoANN DONOVAN is Private Secretary to DON GREEN, President of Utopia. CALVIN WILDE's Dachshund Kennels are advertising: Get a Long Little Doggie! JAMES ROLL's gum factory went on the rocks because he employed BARBARA KURTH and JIM GREENWOOD, and they chewed all the gum. SHERYL CHATFIELD has just invented a new non-break-down car. To date she's made ten successful trips to Aitkin and back. EILEEN BROSE, AUDREY SHORES and PATSEY DEVEREAUX, who are our city telephone operators, just re- ceived a patent on their invention of the C-Whoz -Callin telephone. DIANE CHERMAK has made a name for herself by discovering a medicine which makes the Lower Classman respect the dignity of the Seniors. The oil millionairess, IDA PRITCHARD, is now living in Tulsa, Okla. HELEN THORESON and OPAL MAY- BERRY are employed in her mansion. Helen is Chief Diamond Checker and Opal is Head Money Counter. BRUCE FALCONER is the Chief Tobacco Tester for the White Roll Manufacturing Company. Our confirmed bachelor, RONALD HARRIS, still thinks a wedding ring is like a tourniquet -- it stops your cir- culation. Evangelist ALLAN HENDERSON has recently taken over the position of the retired Billy Graham. His success is related to his able assistant, MARLYCE EASTMAN. ROGER LYDELL finally found King Solomon's Mines, but just as luck would have it, RALPH WILLENBRING beat him to it. ARVAYDA DOMHOLT and DELORIS BRISSETT are world famous for their guitar playing and singing. They have appeared on the programs of many TV celebraties such as the LARRY LADELY, JUDY SAIMA and BARBARA CLAY shows, LOUELLA ROCK and BERNARDINE EKLUND have joined the Ring-tailed Circus as flea-trainers. IUDY RUGRODEN is employed as Chef in the White House. DONALD BITTMANN has perfected for her use a potato binder which picks, peels, and boils the potatoes while she is setting the table. LINDA CLARK and GLEN HARVOLA are being kept busy taking people to and from the moon in their jet planes. The main reason people are going to the moon is to see its President, MIKE COLGROVE. One of the greatest thrills of the whole Celebration was the arrival of our old Classmate MIKE MONNOT, from France, who told us all about his last 22 eventful years in Gay Paree. Foreign Exchange Program Bette Bishop Mike Rose Dorothy Zilka For the past two years our school has participated in the Foreign Exchange Program which is sponsored by the American Field Service. In June of last year, Ralph Hanson, the first student from Park Rapids High School was sent to Germany in the Summer Exchange Program. 1-le returned last fall from his trip for his senior year, full of many wonderful ex- periences. The second foreign studentg Mike Monnot, who came from Uxeau, France, has become quite a fixture in the student body. He has successfully carried American Literature, Business Law, social studies, American History, typing, and also choir. This summer another member of the Junior class will be sent to a foreign country. The Foreign Exchange Program is sponsored by the Student Council and money to cover the cost is given by various civic and fraternal organizations, individual gifts and work projects. Always handicapped by being lighter than the other team, the players never ceased to play hard agressive football. High light of the season was probably the victory on DADS DAY over a much heavier Detroit Lakes team. The game featured some fine offensive play by the Panthers in the first half and a strong defense in the last half which protected a lead and preserved the victory. The latter part of the season was one in which the Panthers were beset with such problems as in- juries to several key men and the invasion of the flu which leveled many players and disrupted the practice sessions. A game with Moorhead, in which several players were lost, probably had much to do with the loss to Staples and Wadena. Several boys made all conference selection. Among these were Doug Everhart, Roger Dissmore, Roger Hansen, Don Green and Jim Greenwood. Don Green and Jim Greenwood were stalwarts in advancing the ball while Doug Everhart and Roger Dissmore were always strong on both offense and defense. Several good men will return for the season next year and with reasonable luck, the Panthers should field another strong team. Jim Greenwood and Doug Everhart did an excellent job as captains of the Panthers. This year's play, Turn Back The Clock, was a comedy flashback to the '2O's, an era of flappers, coonskin coats, and the Charleston. Senior co-captains, Doug Everhart and Leon Smiens, led the Panthers to one of the best seasons in the schools history. The team had a season record of 19 wins and 4 losses. In district tournament play, the Panthers advanced to the finals before being stopped by a powerful Bemidji five. Coach Lowell An- derson's Panthers opened their season by winning six straight ball games before a powerful Willmar team dropped the Panthers. After losing to Bemidji, the team registered 9 straight wins. One of the high lights of the winning streak was a photo finish win over Walker. With two minutes to play the Panthers were trailing by l3 points. Terry Whitebert dropped a free throw with 30 seconds left to tie the game and Doug Everhart hit a long jump shot with 4 seconds left to give the Panthers the victory. The Panthers dream for their first conference title fell short when Everhart sprained his ankle in practice the night be- fore the big game with Crosby-Ironton. The Panthers dropped a heartbreaker that gave Crosby the mid- V state title and dropped the Panthers to second place. The Panthers only losses of the season were to Bemidji, Willmar and Crosby Ironton, three of the top teams in the state.
