nine returning lettermen the football squad began its pre school practice sessions on August 24 1955 After the first week of practice 36 boys mos ed out to Hillcrest on Fishhook Lake for a week of intensive drills in preparation for the strong schedule of games which were to follow The coaching staff consisting of Mr Mathre Mr Clausen and Mr Mooney were anxious to fill the fullback and line positions vacated by graduates At the end of the week at camp the squad elected erry Green and Don Manners as their co captarns As the season progressed these boys displayed out standing leadership which is always vital to a success ful team The Panthers opened against Crosby Ironton and showed their strength in winning 19 6 Aitkm fol lowed on September 16 the game being played at Aitkin under a drenching rain At halftime the Pan thers trailed 12 0 but after adlustrng to the weather they came back strong to win 14 12 erry Green got the Rapids off to a good start in the 2nd half as he returned the kickoff for 82 yards and a touchdown The big game with Bemidji followed the Aitkrn triumph and although our team played improved foot ball the Lumberjacks were the victor by a score of 28 7 after scoring 3 touchdowns rn the fourth quarter The second and last loss of the season came on September 30 as the Detroit Lakers defeated the Panthers 20 6 in a thrilling hard fought contest at the local farrgrounds Bagley was the scene of the next Panther football game and this one was won easily 39 0 All of the 56 boys who dressed for the game saw action A strong Moorhead team was the next obstacle for the Orange and Black to overcome and this they did by the sllmmest margin possible The final score was 7 6 with fullback Norm Condxt making the game wmnmg extra point The two remaining games with Staples and Wa dena were both played with an eye on the Mid State Conference Championship By winning or tying these 2 teams the Panthers would be awarded the Confer ence Championshrp The first game with Staples played at the farrgrounds took on additional impor tance as this was the Homecoming game The game ended in a 15 13 tie but only after Park Rapids had fumbled the ball away on the Staples one yard line in the closing mmutes of the game The final game with Wadena also ended in a dead lock the score being 6 6 However this was sufficient for Park Rapids to win the Mid State Conference championship and thus bring to a successful climax a very thrilling football season Of the 20 squad members who earned letters in football all but two were seniors The conference champs placed three players on the all conference team erry Green halfback Buddy Kaufenberg end and Nolan Hanson tackle The backheld combination of rm Enfield t quarterback Chuck Farrell and erry Green at half backs and Norman Condrt at fullback developed into one of the best backfield combinations in Park Rapids football history In the line ends Kaufenberg and Don Manners tackles Hanson and Mxke Fowler guards Paul Hosek Bob McCollor and George Thelen and center Dick ump were the work horses Chaun cey Craig Otis and Francis Whitcomb Bernie Els chens and Dale Wilson were alternates who gave the needed depth to the team To these and to all of the squad members of the 1955 Panther football squad congratulations for a job well done Se t Se t Sept Sept Oc Oct Oct Oct .-' SEASON RECORD 9 Crosby Ironton 6
