l administration Dr. Oscar Mussman Principal . H+. - -.---'Nr mffsvww -. -1' T515 1- ' lf' 'V' -51-E.- -n .' I M I El I- X L. Mrs. Thelma Battmer Secretary The Park Hill Senior High School graduat- ing Class of 1970 has met the requirements es- tablished by state and local agencies and the members are entitled to receive the diploma sym- bolic of this achievement. On May 29, 1970, members of the Class of 1970 will hear the above statement as a part of the graduation ceremony. What does it mean? It means members of the class were given an endorsement for having met certain minimal standards and that an opportunity has been offered them. Whether the endorsement will have value or the opportunity will be used is still a matter of individual choice and determina- tion, but a real point of beginning has been reached. This is the year when I, too, have reached another level of achievement. As I reflect on the years between the high school diploma and the Doctorate of Education, l find that while I contin- ue to seek answers that appear unanswerable, the comfort and direction necessary to maintain a positive outlook is found in a simple faith. Because of this, if l were to advise the Class of 1970, it would be humble yourself . Yes, hum- ble yourself so that you can continue to be a part of a proud people, a part of an amazing society and a part of a great nation. We must begin to accept the fact that our haughtiness is blinding us to our real purpose. We will surely lose the great promise of our heri- tage unless change is brought about. Our forefathers have provided us with the tools of greatness. If we can throw off the shack- les of selfish pride and move to our real purpose your commencing will lead to more progress af- fecting more people in a shorter period of time than even the most idealistic person could hope. The simple doctrine that each of us must ac- cept is not new. It is a part of the ideals or creeds of many service organizations. Rotarians are constantly reminded to put service above self . But the doctrine I refer to goes back to the teaching of Christ in Matthew, verses 37 and 39, which states, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind , and Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself . It is obvious we are not presently in tune with this direction, so I say to you, begin to make it a part of your life. lt is something that can hap- pen to each of us as we humble ourselves and accept this grand purpose as our direction. ln all the chaos and turbulence of the sev- enties you can make a difference if you have the courage to begin. The strength of our society has been the individual who has gained values from a strong family unit. Let it be said of the Class of 1970, they moved toward a greater purpose, they made a difference, they were the salt of the earth . Nlay each of you have the courage to be humble so that you may see the greater purpose and lead a proud people toward this Divine pur- pose. Oscar lvlussman
