He is drawn between students and parents, faculty and administration, and last of all the public. There are a few men who qualify fully for this position but when one is found he is a rare man, indeed. To us he is known for his sincerity and devo- tion to the cause of the students. To all he is an understanding friend, a concerned ad- visor, and a gentle philosopher of Christian living. Such a person is our beloved principal, Dr. Oscar Mussman. We salute him for his last- ing influence for good among the students at Park Hill, and wish him the mountain top of success. Harmon As each landmark in our lives is reached, it is appropriate to examine the past and to specu- late upon what the future will bring. At these times it is possible for each of us to effect a type of individual renewal that provides us with a new zest for life. As the school year draws to a close, I encourage each of you to spend some time in reflection and attempt to restructure your goals in life. Your reward will be a new perspec- tive of your world and hopefully additional confi- dence in facing it. I sincerely hope your year has been both pleasant and profitable. William Langley Assistant Superintendent We often hear from the older generation of today their expression of concern about the na- ture of today's youth and their ability to cope with the future society. This, of course, is nothing new, because the older generations have been saying this about the younger generations for hundreds of years. However, it is my sincere feeling, as l examine and work with the youth of today, if any- thing, you are stronger in such areas as charac- ter, sincerity, concern for your fellow man, than a good many of us who represent today's so-called older generation. There is no doubt in my mind but that the overwhelming majority of young people of today will rise to the challenges that the future presents, and will handle them just as well and better than those of us who have had the responsibility these last few years. l believe sincerely, and put full confidence in you as a generation, and wish you the best of luck as you move off into the future that confronts you. l am quite certain that with you in charge, the demands of the future are in good hands. Mrs. Thelma Battmer Secretary The Park Hill Senior High School graduat- ing Class of 1970 has met the requirements es- tablished by state and local agencies and the members are entitled to receive the diploma sym- bolic of this achievement. On May 29, 1970, members of the Class of 1970 will hear the above statement as a part of the graduation ceremony. What does it mean? It means members of the class were given an endorsement for having met certain minimal standards and that an opportunity has been offered them. Whether the endorsement will have value or the opportunity will be used is still a matter of individual choice and determina- tion, but a real point of beginning has been reached. This is the year when I, too, have reached another level of achievement. As I reflect on the years between the high school diploma and the Doctorate of Education, l find that while I contin- ue to seek answers that appear unanswerable, the comfort and direction necessary to maintain a positive outlook is found in a simple faith. Because of this, if l were to advise the Class of 1970, it would be humble yourself . Yes, hum- ble yourself so that you can continue to be a part of a proud people, a part of an amazing society and a part of a great nation. We must begin to accept the fact that our haughtiness is blinding us to our real purpose. We will surely lose the great promise of our heri- tage unless change is brought about. Our forefathers have provided us with the tools of greatness. If we can throw off the shack- les of selfish pride and move to our real purpose your commencing will lead to more progress af- fecting more people in a shorter period of time than even the most idealistic person could hope. The simple doctrine that each of us must ac- cept is not new. It is a part of the ideals or creeds of many service organizations. Rotarians are constantly reminded to put service above self . But the doctrine I refer to goes back to the teaching of Christ in Matthew, verses 37 and 39, which states, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind , and Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself . It is obvious we are not presently in tune with this direction, so I say to you, begin to make it a part of your life. lt is something that can hap- pen to each of us as we humble ourselves and accept this grand purpose as our direction. ln all the chaos and turbulence of the sev- enties you can make a difference if you have the courage to begin. The strength of our society has been the individual who has gained values from a strong family unit. Let it be said of the Class of 1970, they moved toward a greater purpose, they made a difference, they were the salt of the earth . Nlay each of you have the courage to be humble so that you may see the greater purpose and lead a proud people toward this Divine pur- pose. In past years the Trojan offense was great, but the defense couldn't hold its own. This year the defense was superb and the offense was the weak point. The coaching staff stated that they thought not enough credit was given to the defense. They have a point there because many games were won by the defense. Of course a team can't win if the defense gives up 42 points, but when you hold a team to six points the offense should score more than one touchdown. This year the defense recovered 15 fumbles. There were six passes intercepted and ran back for good yardage. The coaches stated that there is hardly any way to lose if the de- fense holds the other team. The coaches said they have en- joyed working with the boys, and that they think the defense finally learned how to play de- fense. They brought a new tech- nique of playing defense this year, which is striking with your head. The object of this is to drive your head through the op- ponent's chest. They think the boys have finally learned how to use their hands also. The Trojans used three main defenses-the 5-2, the 5-3, and the 7 diamondg but they did change to fit the situation. The defense this year was filled with juniors, so many will be back next year. There were only 14 seniors on the team. l Terry Davis Honorable Mention Jim Lesow Sportsmanship Award Tri-Captain Most Valuable Player Award Joe Powell Honorable Mention f 'f:?-W5 ' ' 7,l?f '-J Jerry Anderson A ' - - Tri-Captain ' A U PH N ij +-.2 i ,, ,va r-i if 7 va' - , is-44 JP ' L.. Coach Malone This year has not been quite the year that it was expected to be, although, we did end up with a winning record. It is hard to win all of our games because the players have to play to gain valuable playing time. The purpose of having a Junior Var- sity is to teach the boys how they should play and what is expected of them when they become in- volved in varsity competition. I feel that the Ju- nior Varsity can and is an important stepping stone to better achievement in the varsity. I learned to know you pupils of Park Hill as helpful friends. My year in the U.S.A. and especially the time at Park Hill will be a thing that I will always remember in my whole life. You have made me feel as a real student of our school and not as a stranger since the first day I was here. I am looking forward to the remaining months I will spend with you and I know that it will be a great time. But I also know that there will come the time when I will have to leave you and I know it will be very hard for me. You offered me so much and I am only able to give Iittleg I am very thankful for all you did and do for me. I was so afraid my first day here, but something unexpected happened . . . what? All the boys and girls tried to help me, and they were my friends since the first moment, and they did all they could to make me feel as in my own home. What can I tell you about the professors? I didn't understand a word the first days, and they helped me more than I ever had hoped. I want to stop the clock, but I can't, the day is nearer and nearer, and I feel that a piece of me, Park Hill, is going faster and faster. For all you gave me, thank you! It will help me so much, and I assure you that I will remember what you did for me, during all my life. Maybe some day I could pay the debt I have now. In this final message to the Trojans, l'd like to thank you all for your hospitality throughout the year, in and out of school. I am very grateful for the faculty, administration, AFS Club, Steve Carter and my friends, my family and the whole community for making my year so enjoyable. This generous hospitality is a privilege of AFS program, in no other program can we find so close a relationship between people as I have enjoyed under it. As I recall my year in memory, I find so many things I should have done, so many things I could have done to deepen our friendship. And when I realize how deeply I am indebted to you all, I find myself totally helpless for having been so selfish to have enjoyed the privileges without returning your favor. Unfortunately I have to leave now, though I hate to go. But I will return your favor some- time in the future, somewhere in the world, in any way I can to return your favor.
