JONES My congratulations to the Seniors of 1969, and my thanks to all the students and faculty for their fine cooperation this school year. Your school has attempted to meet the responi- bility of teaching what you will use as men and wo- men, not only in an academic way, but in the creation of well-rounded individuals who have the mental abilities and moral aptitudes to meet the problems of life adequately. We are proud of the accomplishments of our students but we are not content to rest on their lau- rels. We are aware that tomorrow even greater prob- lems will confront them. For that reason we hope Park Hill Senior High will continue to do its part to educate graduates who can successfully meet the challenges of a changing world. I believe our youth have the fine qualities that will respond to the present urgency for an increase in both excellence and quantity of learning. I firmly believe also that if the future requires greater competency of the adult, that the students of today have the capabilities and willingness to achieve the added knowledge and skills. In earning a diploma, each of you have become a part of the recorded history of Park Hill Senior High School and your future attainments will be of interest to your school. I wish each of you every success as you move out into the adult world. Russell G. Jones In appreciation for his 23 years of dedicated service in the R-5 School District, the Annual Staff salutes Mr Russell G Jones Cretiring superintendentj and extends to him our best wishes for every success in his new field of endeavor. ADMINISTRATIO Dr. James J. Harmon, Superintendent Mr. William Langley, Assistant Superintendent Those of you who are attending high school today represent the future of society, and as such, need to be prepared to resolve the problems of that future. An examination of the future with its rapid rate of change, its many problems, and what appears to be overwhelming complexities, on first appearance tends to be frightening. However, a second examination re- veals that such a period can be challenging, rewarding, and extremely interesting to people who are prepared. Therefore, for those of you who represent the future, look at it with confidence and anticipation. It should provide you with many rewarding experiences. May you have the best of luck as you continue your prepara- tion. James J. Harmon It is appropriate at this time to direct our atten- tion to the Senior Class of Park Hill High School. As graduation draws near each senior is accorded a unique perspective of his world. The many changes occurring in our society are seen in their true light as challenges and opportunities for those who dare to face them. Yet, while facing the future, each senior is aware of the role of the past in shaping his ability to handle this chal- lenge. Maintaining this perspective is one of the keys to a happy and productive life. To each senior goes my sincere hope that we have prepared you well for the future you face. Best wishes to the Class of '69l William Langley BO RD OF EDUCATIO r E Dr. S. Lloyd Allen, memberg Mr. Harry R. Mayo, board treasurerg Mr. Harry M. Box, vice-presidentg Mr. Harry J. Miller director of business affairsg Mr. John F. Leamon, memberg Mr. William Langley, assistant superintendentg Mrs. LaDel Stephens secretary to the boardg Dr. James J. Harmon, superintendentg Mr. Russell G. Jones, former superintendentg Mr. Donald F Engel, president. MW ADMINI STRATI ON Mr. Oscar Mussman, Principal. Mr. Ben Gieringer, Vice-Principal. The World away from the protection of home and school is a frightening place for the unprepared. lt is my hope that the Class of 1969 is prepared -prepared for the freedom that is a part of the or- dered life. Such freedom is not the freedom which breeds chaos, but the freedom to make choices within the context of responsible action. Our society has made it possible for you to make choices since it is no longer necessary for you to use all your energy in meeting the bare needs of survival. You, as members of the Class of 369, will live in this kind of a world, and most of you will be able to decide on your purpose in life. lt is important that you know yourself, and, to the degree that God grants you the power, be true to yourself. Your parents, friends, teachers, and your school have helped you to learn the basics of life and to gain confidence. Go and serve your purpose. Do your thing. Hope- fully, it will be a heavenly purpose, for then will you know the peace of mind that freedom with direction and responsibility can bring. The world is indeed a challenging place, but it need not be frightening for you who have worked diligently to meet its challenge. Oscar F. See those spots? A VOUS TOU, PROFESSEURS ET IEITUDIANTS One morning I woke up . . . in the United States of America . . . Immediately I realized that something extraordinary had already hap- pened to me. A whole year was waiting before me . . . then somewhat breathless, I took my first steps into my new way of living. Another morning I found myself to be a Senior . . . at Park Hill High School, your high school. Some weeks later, I could say that I was practically a student of the school, a student like you-what a relief!- without that label of foreigner on my forehead! I tried to know each of you better and I was so happy to find out that you were my friends since the beginning. Then, suddenly, I was carried away by the time. I tried to slow it down . . . but in vain! Now that I look back over those months spent among you, I feel my heart heavy: I have to go . . . Really, the experience was priceless and you all made it that way for me. Thank you, thank you for everything, for every smile you gave me, for every gesture of friendship, for all your help and understanding . . . Belgium will know how great this year was for me at Park Hill High School! MERCI MILLE FOIS Your friend, Muriel Gosset Muriel helps teach French. Muriel displays her dramatic talents ADIOS, PARK HILL This short statement could be considered insignificant, all my greetings and thanks for this school and its members. people who I got acquainted with during this year and thoughtfulnesses made my stay in the United States a fine to last and be vivid in me during my whole life. but for me, it involves Also, my thanks to the whose kindnesses and experience. It is going Here, the education, customs and feelings of the people, among many other things, are almost entirely different from those I have-in my country. But, the friendship and sincere amiability of my friends and the love of my family, the two great possessions I'm taking from here, have no variation. Maybe this exper- ience Iive gotten among you during this year won't mean anything to Chile but for me is a debt. I love you all, and the priceless experience, and I hope to pay you back sometime in some way-I don't know how . . . but they will know about you at home. This will help me to understand people better and help me to better realize that people even when they look different are alike, think alike, and love in the same way. If our world could realize this, everything would be different from now. Thank you all and Adios, Park Hill! Sinceramente, Vuestro alumno y amigo Hector Fuentes-Parra Kansas City 14 de Marzo de 1969. af-37' How do they expect me to study in a joint And thenl. . . like this? 60 SAWADDEE The year of 1969 is the year that I had a very memorable experience, and the best of my life. The more I stay here, the more I know and gain, but the time seems to run by so fast. . . fast. In such a short time I have become a part of Park Hill because of its friendliness, helpfulness, warmness, and love. l'd like to stay longer and longer, but we cannot stop the time, cannot stop the sun from moving, or read the calendar backwards. lt's probably hard for you to realize how it feels to be thousands of miles from home and yet still feel at home. This you have done for me with your kind- ness and friendliness. I'd like to express my thanks and appreciation to the Ameri- can Field Service, faculty, and the student body for your help and understanding. I will always remember Park Hill, and hope to return one day in the future. i'Born men are we all: and one, Brown black by the sun : cultured Knowledge can be won: alike. YOUNG TROJANS FIGHT INJURIES Blake Clark leads way for Earl Walker in Blue Springs game. Mike Buster moves in to stop Belton runner. Mike Stodden gains ground around Pius end. PARK HILL 26 EXCELSIOR SPRINGS 26 Trojan prospects looked bright for the season as they came from behind to tie Excelsior Springs. It was a balanced team effort that carried the squad to the dead- lock. Four players scored touchdowns: Mike Stodden on a 23-yard run and later Lester Jackson and Ed Newsom on passes from Danny Pate. Earl Walker accounted for the other tally on a 4-yard run. Brian Purvis added the final touch with extra points. PARK HILL 12 LEE'S SUMMIT 39 After a scoreless first quarter, the Trojans yielded to powerful Lee's Summit, the eventual conference champs. Mike Stodden was the only Trojan able to pene- trate the Tiger defense and scored both touchdowns. Lee's Summit's offensive unit overpowered Park Hill after the early going and sent the team down to their first defeat of the season. PARK HILL 34 BLUE SPRINGS 20 Rebounding from defeat, the Trojans evened their seasonis record at l-l -I. The Trojans scored through the air on long-range aerials from Danny Pate to Lester Jackson and Earl Walker. Park Hill scored on the ground on Mike Stodden's run up the middle and later on a run by Earl Walker. The defense put six points on the board as Dan Pate returned an interception 37-yards for a T.D. Brian Purvis finished the scoring by hitting on four of five attempted extra points. PARK HILL 21 ST. PIUS X 6 The Trojans chalked up their second victory of the season with a romp over the St. Pius Warriors. Again the passing arm of Danny Pate accounted for six points as he connected with Gaylon Hoskins. Mike Stodden continued his fine running highlighted by two touch- downs from one yard out. Brian Purvis was perfect with three out of three on point after attempts. PARK HILL I3 GRANDVIEW I4 A missed extra point in the final ten seconds dropped the Trojans to their second loss of the season. The team fought back from a 14-0 half time deficit. Re- lying heavily on the ffthrowing arm'I of Danny Pate, the Trojans came back as he connected with Bill Maddox in- the end zone for a third quarter score and later Earl Walker on a 70-yard bomb on the game's final play from scrimmage. ON WAY TO 2-7-1 SEASON PARK HILL 0 FORT OSAGE 19 Trojan fans saw a disappointing homecoming game as the team suffered their third loss, a shut-out. Follow- ing a scoreless first half, the surprising Indians began moving the ball through the Trojan line for their scores. Park Hillls offense could never get untracked as their record fell to 2-3-l. PARK HILL 20 LIBERTY 25 The Trojans were dealt their third straight loss by the Liberty Bluejays. After staying close at 7-7 through the first quarter, the team fell behind and never seriously threatened until two late scores by Earl Walker. Mike Stodden ran for the other touchdown and Brian Purvis added two extra points. PARK HILL 13 BELTON 19 Park Hill never led as they suffered their fifth loss of the season at the hands of the Belton Pirates. Plagued by penalties, the Trojans could never overtake the Pirates after closing to within six near the end of the second quar- ter. The two P.H. touchdowns came on a 20-yard run by Jerry Anderson and Mike Stodden's 51-yard dash. PARK HILL 0 ST. JOE BENTON 14 Injuries to key players and cold weather teamed with St. Joe Benton to deal the Trojans their fifth straight loss and sixth of the season. Park Hill was never able to mount a serious drive and the defense had their backs to the wall throughout the game. This was the second shut- out of the season. PARK HILL 6 PLATTE CITY 13 The only three passes completed by Platte City, all accounted for points as the Trojans finished the year 2-7-1. Neither team could move the ball consistently on the muddy field. The Trojans only score came following a blocked punt, on a three-yard run by Galen Hoskins. Park Hill loses ground with their New I. Mussman T Wood T Thompson, J. LeBow, E. Walker, R. Goble, manager. The 1968-69 season was one of difficulty from the standpoint of the won-loss column. However, let us examine this record further. This yearls squad faced probably the best conference and non-confer- ence competition of any P.H. team in recent years. After all, if a team runs up a good record against low-caliber competition, it doesn't mean much anyway. This squad received several setbacks during the season, including illness and injuries to key players. This coupled with some early sea- son losses to good teams could have caused the total collapse of team morale. Though disheartened several times, this team never lost its heart and desire to succeed. After everything is over, what more can we ask! A famous coach once said, 'SWinning isn't everything, but it beats everything that comes in second. This world is going to be run by young people who can encounter defeat and return for another contest with their heads up high searching for success. The success of this year's swim team is based on team pride, dedication to a cause and hard work. All of these things paid off this year as the team established itself as the second best in Kansas City, Mo. The hardest thing for me to establish in the team was a sense of purpose and self confidence. The turning point came in a loss to state champion, Southwest. Attitude changed in workouts after this loss- everyone began to realize that hard work was the key. It all has paid off with a ten and four overall record and the satisfaction of knowing that we have come from nothing to the fifteenth best team in the state meet.
