LAMOY Devotion to one's chosen work can be expressed in many ways, and we, Park Hill High School students, are notunmindfulofthe time and effort spent to make high school days happy, rewarding, and rich in accomplishments. During our high school days, one individual has stood out for many things in addition to being an exceptional teacher of citizenship and American History. His patience, encouragement, kindness, and good advice will long be remembered. As freshman class sponsor and F.T.A. adviser, he knows and greets all students by name and with a friendly smile. He rarely misses any school function, and is always on hand for all sports events. Keeping careful and accurate records of these events has earned for him the well- deserved designation, M r. To Mr. Rawland Lamoy, teacher, sponsor, adviser, and friend, we, The Troyian Staff, with deep appreciation, respectfully dedicate the 1958 TROYIAN. 3 X 1 Q i l -NSI'-ess, , .' num QQ 6 f A! ,I Ng? JONES, SUPERINTENDENT OF R-5 SCHOOLS THE S UPERINTE NDE NT 'S ME SS AGE A high school education has become increasingly essential in this day of technological development and scientific progress. America, today, requires young men and women who have the capability and educa- tional background to absorb specialized and complicated training. I urge all students in our Park Hill High School to complete their high school studies. Such a foundation will be to their lifetime advantage, and a source of strength for our country. gQELcu.,uL'!Kf-- Q :I 2 '2 l-'L 6 PRI CIPAL :Y Q 5 Z Q s 5 RAY L. BROWN, PRINCIPAL OF PARK HILL HIGH SCHOOL THE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE We should always keep foremost in our mind that the greatest resource in our country is the youth of today. Education must be a personal undertaking if we are to receive the optimum benefits in a world where so much progress has been made in physical and mechanical sciences. It is imperative that we learn to live and work together in a world where the jet plane and atomic power are bringing nations closer together in a geographical world. Many phases of our lives in public education should emphasize the importance of learning how to get along with other people, and the frontier of human understanding is a vital problem among all people. If there is a real science of human relations at the present, it must be better developed. This has been a year marked by many achievements and in the coming years, when we are located in our new building, we anticipate greater things. It is my hope that we can all become better acquainted as the years progress. 7 R-5 BOARD OF EDUCATION Mrs. Marvin F. To you seniors who have worked hard and diligently these last four years, our best congratulations to you. From now on your investment in study and learning will begin to pay rewarding dividends. To those who have one to two years to go -- We are concentrating our every effort towards bettering your edue cational system, both in academic standing and physical sur- roundings. For example, the new Park Hill Senior High should be an inspiration to us all. New in every way, it will be eagerly awaiting you to bring it to life this coming school term. Every new school year presents a challenge. To the students: the realization that much of what you do now will, in a large degree, shape your future. To the Faculty, Administrators, and School Board: the responsibility to see that nothing is left undone to give the students a full measure of the opportunity to develop their intellectual and social qualities which are so highly regarded in our present day society. What fun we had at Junior play rehearsals SENIOR CLASS HISTORY As we look back through our years in high school and remember all of the wonderful times and t.he many friends we have made, we know that these years at Park Hill are four years that we will never forget. Our carefree freshman year was full of fun. Initiation will never be forgotten--especially by those of us who were held on trial in the Kangeroo Court. We had several class trips, and of course none of us will forget our picnic and party held in the spring, when practically everyone, including Mr. Lamoy, got dunked in a tub of ice-cold water. As sophomores we began to take a more serious outlook on life, and most of us settled down and studied a little more. Our Junior yearl At last we were considered upperclassmen. In the fall, when a Junior girl was crowned Homecoming queen, we all felt very proud. Our Junior play, Junior Miss, was very successful and was presented for two nights with a dif- ferent cast each night. And thenthere was the Prom. None of us will ever forget that night of May ll when we saw the results of our hard work come to reality. Everyone agreed that Sapphire Seas was one of the most beautiful and elaborate proms ever given by a Junior class at Park Hill. This year, our Senior year, is one we will always remember. In September we received our long- awaited Senior rings. Once again our class took honors at Homecoming, with a Senior girl being crowned queen. We sponsored a magazine sale in October, in which the entire school took part to help us raise money to buy a movie projector and screen, our gift to the school. The Importance of Being Earnest, our Senior play, was presented in November. In December there were basketballogames, parties, dances, and many other activities to keep us constantly on the go. Just the way we liked itl January marked the start of our last semester in high school. Out of the ten organizations at Park Hill, eight of them had Senior presidents. We had four Senior girls who were cheerleaders, and the Editor and Assistant Editors of the annual were also Seniors. We had our first skip day in February. We toured Continental Bakery, Swift's Packing House, and T.W.A. April 22 was our next skip day, and what a balll We boarded chartered busses early in the morning and spent the day touring K.U., Topkea, Lansing, and Leavenworth. The month of May was probably our busiest month. We will always remember the Junior-Senior banquet and prom, our Senior picnic, the Senior breakfast, Baccalaureate, and finally--Commencement. We all agree that even if we did have to study a little, High School has been a wonderful, memorable experience. Yes, we think ours is the best ever--the Class of '58, Ivllv fun when we were sophomores- Finally receiving our caps and gowns EEL' Bl Comphments of BEN IACOBSON 'S 310 Armour Road, North Kansas Clty, Mo. 33 BACCALAUREA TE The traditional Candle -Light A Choir Finale for Many Processional Seniors BACCALAUREATE -4' Choir Processinnal .... We all hold many sentiments about this building. We have had the opportunity to make new friends, and here, we have had many wonderful experiences throughout our school days. As we relate in pictures an average day at Park Hill High School, let us meet some of the individuals who are employed by our school board to work for the betterment of our school, and let us recall some of the enjoyable happenings that took place during the hours of this past school year. Compliments of PARKVILLE HARDWARE AND APPLIANCE CO. 8 E. First Street, Parkville, Mo. Phone: SH. 1-1731 56 The majority of our students ride busses to and from school. We also have a student park- ing lot for those who drive cars, and it is nearly always full--this picture must have been snapped either very early in the morning or very late in the evening. The office is a busy place--especially in the morning. There are absentee excuses to be written and telephone calls tobemade. The general hub-bub in the office is patiently and efficiently handled by Mrs. Battmer, secretary to PrincipalRayL.. Brown. Students at Park Hill are evidently camera shy--the office could never have been this empty. 57 4 The C1IC1Z6llShlp class displays their maps Learn that history, kids. D UH CLASSES We have a wide curriculum at Park Hill, and all of our classes have well-qualified instructors. Every student attends six hours of classes daily, with the exception of those under the Distrib- utive Education program. This goes on in class?? class. Caffg shOP ACTIVITY PERIOD Class meetings and meetings of the various clubs and organizations are held during our 20-minute activity period. A weekly schedule is arranged, giving each club and class the oppor- tunity to meet twice a month. Counting the ballots from the Student Council election. The new constitution is read in the Spanish Club meeting. . J 1 'vi' We decorate for ' dances during Activity period. 1 s Ben scrubs the gym floor between classes. Mrs. Mary Baldwin and Mrs. Lorene Pulem, Head Cook, were also assisted by Mrs. Joyce Cockrill and Mrs. Dorothy Neiman. TIME OUT FOR LUNCH We have three 25-minute lunch periods in which students may eat their lunch, and also have some free time before starting the afternoon session of classes. Those who buy their lunches eat the hot meals prepared by our cooks, and served in the cafeteria. The students who wish to bring their lunches may buy milk and eatin the gymnasium. MISS PATRICIA TRUGOTT Dietician .anal SUMETIMES WE STUDY Our library is well-stocked with many books--all necessary to a good education. Most students have one hour a day for study hall. Those who do not may come in the library before or after school to study. MIS. Thatch is always on hand to help students check out books. She is assisted by the student librarians. MRS. The seniors had great fun putting the freshmen in their places, and the freshmen had equally as much fun dressing in the hilarious get-ups. The first day of initiation was Baby Day, and it was followed by Clean-up Day, At the end of initiation, the seniors held a Kangaroo Court to prosecute and punish all freshmen found guilty of disobeying the rules of initiation. Members of the jury and the judge were all seniors, and naturally, ALL freshmen were found guilty. They are crawling Are they guilty? all over the place! It is strictly for fun, and everyone takes part. This year Hobo Day was held on April 17, and Park Hill had a wide variety of well-dressed--? hobos. TWERP DA Y Twerp Day, held on April 18, gave the girls the opportunity to take over the responsibili- ties ofthe boys. Each grl could ask a boy to be her twerp, and then walkhim to classes, carry his books, and perform other tasks that any gentleman should. A mixer was held sixth hour, during which the girls could ask the boys to dance, and even cut in on dances if they wanted. Student Council is an organization composed of student representatives and faculty sponsors whose primary purpose is to co-ordinate the activities and promote understanding between administration, faculty, and student body. Student Council activities for the year begin in the Spring with Freshman Orientation, a day when all eighth grade students are invited to visit the high school. Student Council members act as hosts to the visitors, showing them around the building, introducing them to their counselors, and serving refresh- ments during a social hour. On the first day of school in the fall, they also act as a welcoming committee to greet not only freshmen, but also faculty and other students, especially those new to Park Hill. Last fall, each faculty woman was presented with a potted plant, the men received fruit, and all received a note of welcome and good wishes for the school year. Other activities, accomplished quietly but nonetheless efficiently, included a Thanksgiving basket to a needy family in the District, sponsoring a basketball game between faculty men and varsity team, the proceeds of which went to the March of Dimes, and the collection of money for CARE which resulted in some 260 pounds of food going to that organization in the name of Park Hill. On the social side, Student Council sponsors the Snowball Dance, all-school mixers, assembly pro- grams, a Faculty-Council party, Twerp and Hobo Days, the all-school picnic, locker clean-ups and show- case displays. During the summer, three representatives with their sponsor, Mrs. Lenora Younger, attended the Workshop at Columbia and the State MASC at Kirkwood. Mrs. Younger is a member of the Executive Board of that organization. During the year, they were active in the Tri-County organization, and next year Park Hill will be the Vice-President. Perhaps the most outstanding accomplishment of Student Council this year was the establishing of a Scholarship Fund of 515100 to be awarded annually to a deserving senior. They were also instrumental in interesting other organizations in a similar activity, and as a result two other organizations established Scholarships this year. 75 Q. gel v sv K? ae 256' OK 456' 239 02' Q10 we W we-05 ef? From a small membership at the be- ginning of the school year, this newly- organized club rapidly gained popularity and a membership by the end of the year totaling twenty-three. Members of the club had an opportunity to practice their future occupation by assisting faculty members in teaching classes, grading papers, and other routine duties of a teacher. Representatives of the Club attended F. T. A. conferences at the University of Kansas City and at Maryville, Missouri. One important aim of this organization is to foster an interest in teaching as adignified, desirable profession. The R-5 Community Teachers Association HAWLAND LAMOY Sponsor voiced their approval of this organization by specifying that the recipient of the Scholarship which was offered for the first time this year, be a member of the Park Hill Chapter of Future Teachers of America. 77 PEP CLUB Patricia Harris, Secretaryg Bonnie Lake, Vice -Presi- dentg Marilynn Bratten, Presidentg Jeannette Stagg, Treasurer. FOOTBALL FOR 1957-58 The 1957-58 football squad was again composed mostly of juniors and underclassmen, however the team's spirit and enthusiasm carried them through two victories and eight losses. The highlight of the Trojan season was the Park Hill Homecoming game played against Savan- nah, the powerhouse of Northwest Missouri. Park Hill recovered in the third quarter and upset Savannah to gain a 21-14 victory. Park Hill was again victorious against Wentworth Military Aca- demy and tromped them 21-6. After losing an all-senior starting line-up last year, Don Livingston, Merle Steele, and John Norman were the only experienced players back, Park Hill had a 20-1 record but didn't lack spirit, just experience, and played schools who out- numbered Park Hill three to one. Next year's team will be more experienced, and, we hope, more successful. C0 - CAP TAINS This was Don Livingston's second year on the V squad.
