The council was a very active organization and took a decisive part in the activities of Park Hill this year, The student council opened the school year by greeting all new students as they enrolled in the fall, and on opening day each teacher was presented with a small gift from the council. The members of the student council were installed at a formal induction ceremony conducted by the National Honor Society. The council sponsored an officers' training class for all class and club officersg published a student handbookg sold candyg was responsiblefor fruit and milk machines: held locker and school clean-upsg set up all assemblies, one each weekg distributed a basket of food to a needy family at Thanksgiving, conducted Eighth Grade Day to acquaint incoming freshmen with Park Hill: and sponsored the annual All-School Picnic. Social activities which the student council sponsored include the Snowball Dance, a Halloween party, I-lobo's-Twerp Day which was climaxed with a Sock-Hop, and two appearances by members of the student body on Kansas City T.V. programs. The council arranged for an appropriate display to be put in the show case each month and also de- corated the school at Christmas time. Stage flats and a make-up kit for the Dramatics Department were purchased with the proceeds of the All-School Play, Skidding, and the Variety Show, both of which the student council sponsored. To acquaint all students with the work which the council does, an open meeting was held for the student body. A questionnaire on council activities was compiled and distributed to each student so that their opinions for student council improvement could be made. The council felt there was a need for a new record player and a library of popular records to be used at various school parties, and functions, so they purchased a new player and started a record library. The council strived to establish good inter-school relations by visiting neighboring councils and having the officers of a nearby council as guests at a meeting, and the organization of the Tri-County Student Council Association for which Park Hill was responsible, As the school year neared its close, the council entertained the faculty at a picnic, and at the annual award assembly presented to their sponsors Mrs. Younger, and Mr, Duncan, and to Mr. Fleming, principal, gifts in appreciation for their splendid co-operation and help. Tri-Countq Historq The most important single achievement of the Park Hill Student Council was the formation of the Tri-County Student Council Association. The purpose of this organization is to promote better inter-school student council relations, and to promote the advance- ment of member councils. Park Hill made arrangements and acted as host for the first meeting which was held at Park College. Seven schools from the counties of Platte, Clinton, and Clay were present at this first meeting and they comprise the Tri-County Student Council Association, They are Park Hill, North Kansas City, Cameron, Liberty, Smithville, Platte City, and Excelsior Springs. A second meeting was held at Liberty, at which time it was decided to invite the Missouri Association of Student Councils to hold their 195'7Convention in the Tri-County area. After considerable campaigning at the M.A.S.C. convention held at Cape Girardeau, it was decided to hold the 1957 convention at Liberty with the Tri- County Student Council Association as hosts. The M.A.S.C. has approximately members. During its short existance the Tri-County has accomplished many things, and is looking forward to a very active and profitable future. This year, the senior year, is one never to be forgotten. Beginning in the fall, a senior girl took Homecoming honorsg and something unusual, all six clubs at Park Hill had senior presidents, not to mention the senior editors of the R-5 News and the '56 Troyian. With the arrival of winter, we see the production of the senior play, The Curious Savage, a magazine sale sponsored by the senior class to raise funds for the gift of bleachers for the football field, and several seniors appeared on Katz T.V. Teen Town and Bandstand. Spring brought several events. Among these: senior field trips to Jefferson City, Colgate, Corning Fiber Glass Co., General Motors, and a picnic at Wyandotte County Lake. There were three State winners in the senior class, and the five Troyian Candidates, being seniors, were interviewed by Janis Paige at Eddys'. The Student Council president was a senior and was ably supported by thirteen senior members, while in the National Honor Society there were fourteen seniors. Ending the year, and of great importance, was the Prom, the Senior Breakfast at Municipal Airport, Baccalaureate and Commencement Exercises. 57 Baccalaureate Purchasing those caps and gowns. Behind the Scenes Mrs. Mary Baldwin, Mrs. Lorene Pulem, Mrs. Joyce Cottrell Bill Ross, who is in charge of the R-5 Maintenance Department, supervises the upkeep of all the buildings in the district. He was always available to make needed repairs and perform any other serv- ices needed. His cheery personality bright- ened the halls of Park Hill. 82 Besides preparing excellent lunches for 300 hungry students each day during the '55-'56 school year, these women prepared the food for the Junior-Senior Banquet, Foot- ball Banquet, and several other of- ficial dinners. But more than this, they worked overtime to make the year more enjoyable by preparing birth- day cakes, holiday dinners, and special treats for both students and faculty. These extra services will be long remembered by everyone who attended Park Hill this year. Bill Ross 1455 54, . , ---, ,. THE 1956 SEASON As the season of 1956 made its appearance, it was apparent that the Trojans lacked speed and all- around size, while the small turnout made it very difficult to find the necessary boys for the available positions. But with all the drawbacks that were facing the Trojans, they showed that they were made of the right elements, as they faithfully practiced, and, under the expert guidance of Coach Jankowski, played each game to the best of their ability, and showed hustle all the way. If there is any cushion to the Trojans' record of 1 win and 8 losses, it would be the calibre of the other teamsg for of the nine teams, three won their conference title, and three others were runners-up in their league. The Trojanettes, playing with a very young team, again proved that they had the ability to play winning ball. The Trojanettes won the Wellington Tourn- ament, and were a serious threat in the Northwest Missouri Eight Conference Tournament as they made a bid for their third consecutive win, losing in a real thriller to North Platte by a very narrow margin. Coach Bryan took a team that could reasonably be expected to have a mediocre season, after losing practically the entire team by graduation, and then set himself to breaking in some new freshmen to fill the empty gaps. To the amazement of many people, Coach Bryan came up with a winning team that just wouldn't quit, no matter what odds were against them. This tribute goes to a fine coach and a fine team whose record of 18 wins and 2 losses will be a horizon toward which other teams should strive. Behind the excellent coaching of Howard D. Duncan, the Trojans showed agreat deal of spirit and the will to win. Actually, it would have been possible for the Trojan nine to have a 7-3 season as they lost close games to Pem-Day and Christian Brothers, of St. Joe, due to an outstanding amount of errors. 94 Compliments of NORTH KANSAS CITY DISPATCH ' H 'ftp t-1 . i s Q 3 . - 1 4,.-W., i :stains -1521714 ff? , ' ' 1- r:,'fff,,,,fs,f1o '?'Zsiil'.4'::::' 5: - 4 Q H l is it 'wil 'i :i E,f'- i'5?9f5f'i1t 'i5'iEEf :L5fT:Q7t..iiify' 'iviijl Vffjij' ' 'fQS,:'.Q,i ,iii J-Lt ' 'gif 1. f lp' sifwfgi-,,fz 1 s1if.55'w2wg S MS, 5511, ' ' rm'1w+:22f1.si,ew, , foils- j rg-1, 41, 'Q , V, ,gl ff,-riwsiifrs sri fgfimaiii :fix 'fin i f , 5i5!:.'-iii.J ff: ' was i no V ,gs it ,, ,t , , is ' -'fifimiif '5 5 -if Q- Q5-fl i's Q is if .,.' smiig i e .sm ....,.---ws ,ge Q Q ' visa aft .Q Jim Miller Pitcher Dick Bauguess Manager On The Defense A 1 L , 1 W 1 .sez ,Q Q , , ' - J- . f .- f:..ff'fw+1:,Jifsl' f if KA Y ' 'fav-' 2 Y V ,AL,,k -' , Mwwyww.-aywMQ5 ' ' ff - viii '- ,ffm :gif-' f - 1 .5 -A- 1 ' Gene Deckard First Base Glenn Harrington Shortstop , Pitcher Letterman iWw,n,,1 rw- ., www. -fm.. Activities of the Mcndriqcils For the first time at Park Hill William Bucker selected ten students from the Choir, whose voices he felt blended well, to sing as a group called the Madriga1s. The name is derived from the fourteenth century Italian singers who gathered around long tables to sing intricate harmonies called madriga1s. The group sang at various gatherings in Parkville and North Kansas City and at the National Honor Society Induction in December. March 23 was the date the Madrigals performed at District Music Contest to earn a II rating. The numbers sung for Contest were Czechoslovakian Dance Song and Prayer for Peace, O Holy Night, The Cross, TheMusic Makers, and others were numbers the Madrigals worked on during the year. These singers were well accompanied on the piano by Bob Battmer, freshman. GCI 111056 DHHS fight.
