He gave unstintingly of his unusually fine artistic talent, which added so rnuch to the activities of Park Hill HighSchoo1--the Junior-Senior Prom of'54 and the Pan-Arnerican Festival are outstanding examples of his time and effort. Rarely was he seen without a camera, and many of the pictures in the annual represent his work. In addition to this, he found time to take an active part in many school clubs, among them the National Honor Society and the Spanish Club, and to lead his class scholastically. To this outstanding senior of '55--Bill Henry, the Troyian Staff expresses the appreciation shared by students and faculty. 3 :2 Ii R , .Q S -- X A Q ,gg-3 A M X H .f1.:'g3gi::f Riff Ms...4f:,. This group was organized in the fall of 1952, the first year Park Hill High School came into existence. The council has definite aims and purposes for its being and they are: To provide means of creating better fellowship and understanding between faculty and students, and among students themselves . To give a greater oppor- tunity for self government and experience in democratic prac - tices. To strengthen the school. To encourage greater student participation in extra- curricular activities. We would like to thank the administration, fa c u lt y, and student body for their co- operation this year and we are proud of the accomplishments achieved. We leave a fervent wish for the success and devel- opment of this organization. Sincerely, WWQWWMZ Mary Io McCormick President 'li.aZ'7 Hu. JONES, B. S., M. S. Warrensburg State College University of Missouri SUPERINTENDENT OF R-5 SCHOOLS the sup mntenoenfs ssaoe In a school which functions for the welfare of all, there is a sense of responsibility and cooperation which causes that school to operate smoothly at all times because each student and each teacher does his best to be sure every- one is in the place where he should be, doing what he should do, at all times. Every student and faculty member should feel that the position he or she holds in that school is of utmost im- portance, and he or she should understand that the moment that position is neglected the lives of every student and every faculty member are disturbed. Each part of our school is useful and necessary. Every department, club, and activity is very important and must not be neglected, because our school is our School Spirit, not our building. Our Morale, Attitude, School Spirit or, call it what you will, can function only as we each pull our share of the load and shoulder our part of the responsiblity of doing all assignments well, urging others to cooperate fully, and living happily together. My congratulations to all students who attend our school on their fine cooperative attitude. I extend heartfelt gratitude to every member of the faculty and Board of Education. I feel certain that people such as these, whom l have grown to love, will consistently lead students in even greater loyalty and cooperative thinking about con- tinual improvement of educational opportunities in Park Hill of future years. Barbara Bucker William Bucker The seniors of the Class of '55 began their high school days in Parkville and North Kansas City. When the new high school was built, these two freshman classes united to form the first sophomore class at Park Hill. In their junior year, the class of '55 undertook the planning of the Prom, The Land of Make-Believe: an Operetta, Love Goes Southg and produced several queens and a king. One junior girl took Homecoming honors and the twins of the class claimed the Carnival honors. The senior year was filled with both gay and serious moments. The Seniors' field days included an educational trip to Kansas University, as well as fun trips to Swope Park and the Airport, and Folger's Coffee Company. Naturally, the Prom and Graduation Exercises will never be forgotten. The play, For the Love of Pete, was presented by the class. Not to be outdone, the class again won the honor of having the Carnival queen. A senior girl and boy represented Park Hill on T.V. Tunes, and five senior girls, nominated for Troyian Queen, also made their television appearance. There were also several senior couples on Katz T.V. Teen Town. The class sponsored a magazine sale to raise funds for a tennis court, and with the help of the Board of Education, this gift was made possible. The senior class was well represented in the Student Council, with a senior girl as president. Seniors also held high offices in most of the other school organizations. The class had ten seniors representing them in the National Honor Society. They were also well represented at the District and State Music and Commercial Contests, where they received several One ratings. This year was a memorable one, and the thoughts of it shall be cherished through- out our lives. 14 ILA MARIE BALLOU F. H.A. Half-time Warmupl l Hot Dogl Buddy's Best Friend Junlon pnophecy A group of alumni has returned from a motor trip across the country beginning in New York. They brought back a good account of what the Class of '55 has been doing since they graduated. Let's begin in New York and work westward and see what the kids are doing this year of 1983. First we see in the chorus line of one of the current Broadway plays, Carole Jean Cox, Sue Feiring, Shirley Williams, and Annie Larimer beating their hooves to some real jazz. Judy Lake, Marcia Milum, and Joy Crawford have formed their own vocal trio, entertaining the representatives to the United Nations. By the way, Miss Mary J o McCormick is now the United States representative taking Robert Lee Mattox's place, since he retired last year, Skipping now to the Follies Burlesque we see Ila Ballou and Mary Aring entertaining as bubble dancers. Be careful and don't let the bubbles break. While we are still in the show biz line let's drop in at the Metropolitan Opera House. We heard that Rex Carleton is singing here, accompanied on the piano by Bob Yerrington. Don't feel bad, Bob, some- body has to accompany the singers. A few days after the beginning ofthe trip, an alumni saw an ad in the New York newspaper advertising Dr. Jim Holland's new wonder-preparation, guaranteed results, for men with bald chests. Stepping inside the Buick division of General Motors we see sitting behind a desk with a sign stating Assistant Vice-President, the distinguished Mr. Jim Hall. When he buzzed for his secretary, Jo Ann Hughes walked in. 35 I -- --V-.vm w v- rv -- .fwv--' fr Y T- ' e --. Y Lv wygig p. r ip - iw ' g v p I , 'EE ...,:-. . gg 4.35. L , X .4-, .3 -, ,i-,., ,.,-. ..1 ' - ti K 1 'fit LQ'-'f 'A f' 1 Well for he.-lven's sake, listen to what is in the newspaper, Robert Johnson and Charles Lee Johnson, big businessmen from Parkville, just took control ofjohnson and Jotmson Baby Products Company. They'l1 keep me name going, anyway. While we are still in New York, let's drop over to see how Barbara David is doing teaching English Literature at Columbia University. By the way, we hear Barb is writing good literature for Bugs Bunny comic books. The next city visited was Miami, Florida where only one of the Class of '55 settled. She is Miss Nina Green. Nina's doing pretty well for herself with her beauty parlor specificallyfot dyeing the furof French Poodles red. She's partial to red hair and fur, you know. With no more dilly-dallying around, we bid farewell to Miami and head for the old home tovm of Parkville. When we go in to rob the Parkville Bank, we see Norma .lean Ameel, President, sitting behind a huge desk, puffing leisurely on a big cigar. Then we see Donald Barrows, as Norma Jean's secretary, typing at the incomparable rate of 120 correct words a minute. As we continue, our plans for robbing the bank foiled by the city mashall, Larry Shields, we see Jim Allen and Lester Beaty as co-owners of a bowling alley with shuffle board tables as a sideline. On the corner where the old Junior High building used to be, we notioe Richard Black and Robert Black are running a used car lot by the name of Black and Black's Bring 'em Back Shot Used Car Lot. While sitting peacefully in the new park outside Parkville, we heard sirens blow, whistles and bells clanging. lt was the great tree surgeon, Dr. Sherrill Brush in action. Despite all the commotion, it was only a minor catastrophe. lt seems Marie Calder's dream nest was sitting on the end of a broken limb at the very Lip-top of a large oak. Who's this we see directing the Park Hill Band? Now that she has turned around we see, rather gray-haired but still lively, Nathalie Finnell. She just can't tear herself away from the old place. Now for some of the news from a few of the smaller towns around Parkville. There is a new typewriter shop in Kansas City on the corner of 8th and Grand. Charles Shikles and Bob Yates have taken to fixing these machines. Heaven help the poor typistsl One of the alumni read in the Kansas City Star that Charles Huddle had just broken the high-jumping record at the Olympic Games, jumping 9 feet, 3 inches flat-foot. Nice going, Hudl Now on WHB we hear Floyd Spain, accompanied on the guitar by Herman Duermyer, singing old-time religious songs on the Old Fashioned Gospel Hour. In this year 1983, we find Pat Galloway running for alderman in Northmoor on the platform, Let the Trailer Parks Stay. Also, we hear that Karen Allman and Don Burt finally decided to tie the knot. They wanted time to make up their minds, We know everyone expected Deneie Gore to be famous, but she fooled us. The last time we saw her she was hitching a ride on a box car, going to the annual Hobo's Convention, because she was kicked off the train by Herbert Smith, a railroad detective. ' Well, time is getting short and we must be moving on. Next stop--Chicago. You haven't seen anything until you go to the lnternational Amphitheater and seea wrestling match. This we did, and to our surprise we saw Joanne Caldwell, with manager Eleanor Jones, wrestling Andrea, the Ape Girl. Not wanting to be entirely ignorant of world news, we bought several newspapers and while looking through them we saw a feature article on the Star Guard for the Minneapolis Lakers' Professional Basket- ball team, Miss Jacky Beanpole Gresham. Quite a change from the usual type of player, wouldn't you say ? Also on the sports page, we read that Butch Russell and Arthur Nelson have formed a two-man base- ball team. They have a good record, won l lost 129. Not many teams can lose that manyl Reading further we come to an item of importance. Sammy Cox and Don Williams have built a race track. Their slogan is We Run 'em and Ruin 'em. Well, how about this. ln the same article we see that Joann Tift and Sharlene Meyerkorth are the hottest drivers in the Powder Puff Derby at Sammy and Don's race track. Cruising down Lake Shore Drive we passed a big television service shop. Everyone knows Jerry Mattivi has always been mechanically minded, but when he opened Mattivi's T.V. Service it astonished all of us. One of our news hounds came to our hotel and told us Buddy Cox has applied for a license for a distillery. We heard that distilled water was better than regular water, As all good things must, our visit in Chicago ended. Going through Oklahoma, we stopped to see how Kenneth Dugan and Jim Fata were getting along. 'Pears to us that they went and struck themselves some oil. Well, Bill Mackinlay has done Kenneth and Jim one better. He is now working on a new invention. He's trying to perfect his idea of a One-way rocket to the moon, especially for high school principals. We saw a car whiz by just a minute ago and on the side was printed i.n bright red letters--Dolly Fletcher's Drivers' Training Program. Dolly decided, after taking drivers' training from Mr, Bryan, that she was qualified to teach hot- rodding. Do you like children? Well, it seemslanice Sheridan, Pat Sutton, Sylvia Hevalow and Winona Seams- ster do, because they have opened an all-day nursery. How long it lasts depends on which one of them loses her mind first. Patty Cottrell and Cleo Jones have started something new in the business world. And to think it happened in Parkvillel They have opened a used-d ress shop where you can have your old dresses over- hauled or pick up a slightly used model. So far we haven't seen Allen Oberhelman doing a thing. This afternoon there was a reunion of the Class of '55 back at the old high school. While walking down the hall at Park Hill we heard a wild scream from the art room. Looking in- side we saw Bill Henry throwing paint at a picture he had painted. No, he isn't teaching at Park Hill he just can t seem to make the grades to graduate Way back in the pine forests of the Rocky Mountains we bumped into Buddy Pickering pouring over the account books of his autographed toothpick factory We re headed for Hollywood now on this last lap of our trip Hope it s as good as we expect While we were going through one of those big movie studios we saw handsome Bob Jeffries I-le's expecting an Academy Awaid for his part in the revised edition of the film Mutt and Jeff We re sure all the alumni enjoyed their trip as much as we enjoyed their account of it .s..l...s sophomone A f 4. BOTTOM ROW: Forwards: Carole Jean Cox, Mary Jo McCormick, Joy Crawford. The Park Hill girls started the season with a veteran team of which much was expected, There were seven letter-winners back from the preceding victorious season, including five starters. The girls pretty well lived up to expectations, by compiling a 16-2 record, with the B Squad and Freshman Squad going through the season unde- feated, Highlights of the season were the two victories over a very fine Raytown team, and winning the Northwest Missouri-8 Tournament at Smithville. The Trojanettes always showed high competitive spirit and good sportsmanship, either in winning or losing. Also, the wil1.ingness to practice regularly and the absence of individual attempts to star, made the Park Hill girls a really strong team. To the seven seniors who have finished their competition, we say, Well done, girls, and to the returning squad members, Let the 1955 season be a standard to be attained in later seasons ,Lv practice and teamwork. ,, T gl A . j W , , f 1 f 1 f 413, if f 74 RAEBURN BRYAN Coach ', l f. 47. FRONT ROW: Bob Jeffries, Charles Huddle, Prospects for a winning season in basketball were remote, as the Trojans prepared for their 1954-'55 season's opener. Bob Jeffries was the only holdover from the '53-'54 team that had a mediocre record. This meant that a rebuilding program had to be launched. The problem was to find the best material possible to represent the Trojans on the hardwood this year, and one that would bolster the future prospect in basketball. Twelve boys were selected on the basis of experience, speed, and fundamental knowledge to the Varsity. A break-down on team personnel shows that all classes were represented. Two regulars will be lost through graduation, leaving ten experienced boys for next year's team. The team showed definite lack of experience and balance. Height was lacking, as was the over all ability to hit from the field and free throw line We believe that from the fine competition the Trojans faced this year there will be a vast improvement in next year s ball club Coach 1 I 2 ?w6 viii 5 W , I if. ,,:Qp' ff? 1 I W -,.-., .TACK MYNATT Captain I. . . . 59 1 ' - H ' ' C 'J' f'f . Under the direction of Mr Bucker director, the band has had a very successful and exciting year. It was an unusual ex- perienoe, participating in the mass band which was held at Park Hill with several neighboring schools. Being a member of the band includes the annual trip to Mary- ville, where they received a rating of III, this year. To break the monotony of traditional music, the band often rehearsed several popular selections. This organization has a lot of fun, and is one of Park I-lill's proudest supplements. 69 SHERRILL BRUSH Student Director 7:7 F? IEE Q AZ e?'
