A PRIDE PRIDE: excessive self-esteem; high opinion of one’s own importance or worth; undue sense of superiority; personal dignity; that of which one is proud. In the beginning, Park Center was only a school. A mere building with all sorts of modern equipment, a staff, and possibilities unlimited. All it needed was the students, and the students came. They came from all over, most from Osseo. School started, the teachers taught, the students learned, but there was something missing. They needed a common bond, something to hold them together, something to believe in. Who knows when it happened? Maybe it happened the first time PC won a football game, or maybe it happened with the first chord the band played or the choir sang, or maybe it happened the first time something was learned in the classroom. Who really knows, but it was there. The unity, the common bond, the purpose. PRIDE- but not just pride- PIRATE PRIDE, and it spread like a rash throughout the student body, and even the staff. People were proud of PC. They were proud of their athletic teams, proud of their music department, and proud of their academic achievements. PC slowly developed a reputation among the other high schools. We were looked up to, and we still are because we have that one special element- PIRATE PRIDE. No other school has it and no other school could. It’s the students and the staff that created this pride and it will be the students and the staff of the future that we hope will carry on this pride until PC closes it’s doors for the last time. ks 5 Park Center proud and bold, hail to the colors green and gold. SPIRIT WEEK Grub day in psych class. 10 Topped off with a hat! n 12 13 WE DOWNED THE FLYERS! 15 16 MOMENTS TO REMEMBER Homecoming week was designated Spirit Week. Monday was sunglasses day, the next was hat day, then 50’s day, followed by grub day on Thursday with the coronation that night, and finally, Friday brought spirit day with the traditional win on the football field and the dance later that night. Homecoming was put on by the Senior Class Cabinet. They did a fine job: coronation was sparkling as the authentic jukebox put out original 50’s tunes that filled the malt shop setting. The four M.C.’s kept the coronation rolling with introductions of the royalty and the fine talent that yielded a lot of variety. The final touch was the breath-taking moment of the crowning of the Queen Julie and King Joe. The two reigned over the remaining Homecoming activities. This year’s talent was a real crowd pleaser. There was everything from High Hopes, Chipmunks, Deja Vu, The Cars, Greased Lightening and the Danceline, to singers, Tarr II and a mime. For the first time, the danceline held fall tryouts, which enabled them to recruit 22 top-notch dancers. Danceline competed in several competitions and performed many times In the metro area. Whether they danced on too small a stage or on treacherous ice. the Pirouettes gave audiences memorable performances. In addition danceline practiced 4-5 times a week to improve dances or create new ones. Come next year, danceline will have lost fifteen members to graduation, but memories of this past season should be inspirational to the new recruits. Wishing secretly you were a star.” These are lines from “The Grand Illusion” by STYX, and it describes how the audience of Anything Goes felt as the curtain opened for each performance. If you saw Anything Goes during it’s November run, maybe you remember some of the highlights. And even if you weren’t in the audience, you may have heard some pretty strange things about this musical. It’s unlike any other musical Park Center has ever performed. The characters include a gangster, a slinky nightclub performer (who is part evangelist), four “angels,” an English gentleman, his fiance and her ecentric mother,, a stock broker and his boss, a flapper who chums around with the gangster, two Chinese gamblers accompanied by a missionary, an entire sailing crew including the captain, plus a shipload of passengers. To put the plot in a nutshell, it’s a boy meets girl type of story that takes place on a 1930 love boat: boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy gets engaged to girl. Girl meets up with old flame. Old flame arranges for sexy lady to entertain boy. Old flame falls in love with girl. Boy falls in love with sexy lady. And everyone lives happily ever after. 30 I remember what happened the last time we took a quick spin! 31 You're the top! Evl, one look at you and I get HOT PANTS ! Oh hello there! I'm Mr . Gay Hanson Mr. Edward Rochester Steve Harrington Mr. Mason Todd Passenheim Crew Dan Lane Debbie Davis Cast: Dana Zumwinkle. Todd Passenheim. Gay Hanson. Steve Harrington. The One-Act Play for this year was Jane Eyre. It was a very serious play, requiring firm interpretation on the part of the small cast. The play, which was rehearsed for six weeks, was performed three times. The Region 5AA contest was held at Fridley Grace High School, and Jane Eyre won 3rd place. It was also performed at Holy Angels, and at Park Center for the public. Mr. Christenson, the advisor, felt that it was the finest cast in all of his ten years of directing One-Act Plays. 34 CHILDRENS THEATRE What is Children’s Theatre? It starts with a group of talented students, willing to spend a lot of time putting together a play for 3,000 children in the district. It is the most unique type of play, in that rehearsals are never held on the actual stage of performance. The performances are held in the gyms of the elementary schools, which requires a lot of flexibility on the cast’s part. The audience is involved In the play which means that the cast must adapt to different situations. Because of the audience participation, the play is always done differently- This year’s play was The Emperor’s New Clothes, and involved a cast of 12. The play lasted 45 minutes, and the props and set included 7 boxes, 1 mirror, and a weaving loom; leaving the task of inspiring most of the imagination to the cast. The advisor, Mr. Hermann, summed up this year’s play by saying. “The success of the play relies on the actors’ imagination and getting them involved with the kids. Our cst did that very well.” CAST Emperor Mark Walters Empress Julie Kronen Gengo Don Berke Minamoto Sarah Cederberg Mikilu Lisa Bromen Haiton Rick Lareau Takaguchi Mark Miller Stage Keeper Mary Columbus Stage Protector Sue Tyo Stage Protector Paula Carlson Stage Musician Tammy Chamberlin Morotaka Jerry Haupert SNO-DAZE 1980 Senior Attendants: John Bevacco and Kim Deithert 1980 Sno-Da2e King and Queen: John Bevacco and Jill Witherbee Senior Attendants: Kevin McGown and Jill Witherbee Senior Attendants: Steve Bear and Beth Bodick Senior Attendants: Paul Domaas and Nancy Lcerhoff Senior Attendants: Dave Leyse and Torri Lee 36 1980 Sno-Daze M.C.’s: Steve Stong and Bridget Olzenak at right, and at left: Kurt Holmgren, without fellow Qupld: Mike Hallman Sophomore Attendants: Rex Rabine and Vicki Helm 1979 Sno-Daze King and Queen: Peg Gutenberg and Mike Hunger Junior Attendants: Clint Vilks and Angie Helm 37 SNO-DAZE 1980 TALENT IN THE HEART OF THE NIGHT 38 Rlngo Starr George Harrison MORE TALENT Steve Richael THE PILLOW PEOPLE 39 The Royal Court’s Jester STILL MORE! The National Honor Society started planning Sno-Daze ’80 two months before the event. Soon plans turned to reality as committees were formed and the actual work got rolling. The date of February 14 set a great mood and enhanced the theme “In the Heart of the Night.”. Decorations consisted of traditional Valentines Day symbols such as hearts, stars, and of course cupids speaking of cupids, where did those two butch cupids go? The M. C.’s got coronation off to a great start with royalty and talent introductions. Talent was full of variety with each individual act giving off it’s own charm and excitement. Soon the last act finished and all became still. “Who will it be?”, people whispered. Curiosity grew as the M. C.’s fought over who would get to do the announcing. All was quiet, and then came the suspence shattering moment of the M. C.’s announcement of king and queen. There is a burst of applause, then with royal crowns in place, 1980 Sno-Daze King John Vevacco escorts Queen Jill Witherbee around the gym for the royal walk. The two reigned over the rest of the Sno-Daze activities. After coronation, everyone headed toward the cafeteria to participate in the festive carnival activities. The following morning there was the traditional Sno-Daze pep fest followed by more picture taking. After that the royalty headed off to Country Kitchen for breakfast, then to the IDS, then to MI PI. That evening many danced the night away to the band “Escape”. Finally to the disappointment of all, Sno-Daze ’80 came to it’s conclusion. How exciting it all was! 41 FRONT ROW: Director Ed Anthony. It was a highly successful season featuring first place finishes in the Tater Daze and Buffalo parades. The band also came in second at Princeton and Milaca and received a third place trophy against tough competition at Montevideo. The summer’s success was based mainly on greatly increased membership, with many highly spirited individuals, and the return of Mr. Hoiseth as director. With an improved band, and the spirit to keep it going, the summer of 1979 was a great success. FOOTBALL MARCHING PIRATES Keep those lines straight! LEFT. RIGHT. LEFT!! Their main project was Homecoming. With only four short weeks in which to work, the cabinet produced a very successful! Homecoming which will always be remembered. The cabinet was greatful to Mr. Okerson who did a super job as a first year advisor. Other activities carried out the rest of the year included; singing Christmas cards, snow-daze raffle, and the senior banquet. 56 CABINETS JUNIOR The Juniors were quite busy this year. They selected Teresa Olson as their president, and Joyce Klefsaas, Ilze Spro-gis, and Lisa Geris as their other officers. The group planned this year’s prom for the 9th of May, at the Registry Hotel. To help raise money for the prom, the Juniors had a rock-a-thon, and sold Booster Buttons. Front Row: Sandy Flowarskl. Lisa Dietman. Ll a Geris. Student government at Park Center went from a classroom situation to a representative extra curricular council. Each homeroom had the opportunity to elect a representative to sit on the council. It has had a slow start but there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel. “When I look back and think about all the work and time that has been spent trying to make OSA work, it hardly seems worth it. But I can take great pride In PCSC because it’s new and energetic. We don’t get a credit anymore, but what we do get is far more valuable. Typewriters crackled, as diligent reporters and photographers went dashing through the school to get the scoop on the latest news. Many times students had to frantically step aside because a Buc reporter was vaulting down the hall in search of a gymnastics story, or a fast breaking news story. But the hardest worker of them all, and the guy who was seen running up and down the halls with a pack of screaming sophomore girls nipping at his heels, was none other than Fillmore Gorch, cub reporter and renounced humorist. The reward for all this effort was the Buccaneer. PC’s news magazine. At that time they were using A.V. equipment furnished by the Osseo school district. But in 1977 they acquired new equipment which was certainly as good as that used by some professional radio stations. There were twenty active members on the KPCI staff this past year, with Scott Losey as Program Manager, Pat Cain as General Manager, and Joel Cary as Assistant Manager. KPCI was open to anyone who signed up and could operate the equipment. Tune selection was decided by polls taken by the student body. The KPCI staff also hosted a number of dances held in the school cafeteria. The money made from the tickets and the use of the concession stand went toward the purchase of new records. KPCI was for entertainment and informational use. Shows were broadcast daily in the morning before school, during the three lunch periods, and after school. 62 FRONT ROW: Greg Nyberg, Scott McLcar, Sean McCoy, Scott Losey, Dan Lane. ELECTRONICS Crack there went a fuse, that was Electronics hard at work for the second school year. Electronics was a club for anyone who was interested in working with electricity and doing experiments. They also made an electric game for Snow Daze Carnival booth. Electronics was a way to getting students interested in Amateur Radio (known as Hams). They had to learn to use the equipment and get a license. Just before Christmas they talked to seven different countries and were able to talk to anyone around the world. This past year Columbia Heights and Fridley High Schools were also involved in Ham operation. All three schools got together and showed each other what they had for equipment hoping they would get other schools involved someday. Our club had eight active members and four more who were on their way to getting a license. The Electronics club bought an antenna and mast and put it on the school roof. Students debate in interscholastic competition where they earn points toward membership and various degrees of honor in the National Forensic League. Debaters are trained for leadership by: learning to make a thorough analysis of current issues on the national and international level; learning to think on their feet in front of audiences; and becoming skilled spokespeople on advanced controversial issues of the day. 64 SPEECH CLUB There’s more to speech than talking. That’s what the 35 students involved in the 1980 Park Center Speech Club found out. They took poems, stories, essays, plays, and ideas and discovered how to present them orally in the most effective way. Participants in the program learned how to fight nervousness, how to speak in front of a large crowds, and how to use their own ideas and voices to get a message across to a group. With the help of the coach. Mr. Christensen; and assistant. Miss Krause; the students competed in invitationals, round-robins, sub-regions, regions, and finally the state meet in St. Cloud. Students received ribbons and medals, while the winning school in the regions won a trophy. 1980 Speech Club Lisa Bromen Debbie Davis Dana Zumwinkle Gay Hanson Pat McNevin Mary Miranowski Paul Necklen Dan Pfaffe Dan Hendrickson Scott Finsrud Jim Foote Robert Dulalia Mike Kempenick Peggy Vetter Dave Glenzinski Doud Chevelier Karina Stellberg Steve Harrington Jeff May Gretchen Schnieder Tammy Chamberlain Bobby Blanz Becky Krause Jodi Marsyla Michelle Boll Dawn Renner Cindy Anderson Sarah Cederberg FRONT ROW: Tammy Chamberlain. Very simply it is a group of dedicated, hard working seniors striving for one common goal: to go to Europe in the summer of 1980. It sounded easy enough. Just hop on a plane, fly over to Europe, travel around for a month, and fly back; all for under $1000. However, It was not quite that simple. The two teacher-chaperones, Mr. Causton and Mr. Larson, insisted on that. The students had to plan out where they wanted to go, how much time to spend in each place, and what to see while there. Also, they were required to get a basic knowledge of the German language (if they didn’t have it already) through an X L German class. Furthermore, in a before-school class called European Studies, they studied the cultures and customs of the countries they planned to visit (trimesters 1 and 3). Although all the planning started in their junior year, the fun activities began once school ended. During summer vacation, the members of the group got together to get in shape and to get to know each other better. Some of their activities included a 4-mile run, a 15-mile hike, a bike trip to Lake Calhoun, and a trip down the Apple River. Once school reopened, the studying and planning intensified. Costs had inflated to $1600, yet all but one person stayed on. The final test for all the hardwork will come in Europe, but no matter how the trip turns out, the knowledge they gained in the classroom will remain with them, always. Taking first was Robinsdale with a score of 137.00. The officials had tallied up the points incorrectly and originally gave P.C. third. But upon recounting the scores, P.C. was given some additional points, enough to claim the second place trophy. At the beginning of the season, most people were skeptical about a repeat champoinship of last year’s gymnastics team and were surprised of their 5 ranking in the state. The squad responded with an excellent display of team work, lifting the 5 ranking to 1 and becoming the favorite to win the state title by 1.4 points. The guys went through the season with the determination to win it all. They held up the tradition of never losing the Lake Conference title and boosted their 6 year unbeaten string in dual meets to 62 by adding on an 11-0 record. Then came the section three regionals in which they won a sixth straight title by scoring a season high of 140.05. They were on their way to the state meet. The team met up with a little hard luck when co-captain Dave Genadek came down with the chicken pox one week before state. The guys did a sensational job to fill in for Dave, though his absence may have cost P.C. the title everyone was hoping for. GIRLS SWIMMING Twas the night before initiation and all through the pool; the sophomores and freshman thought they were so cool. At home after practice all snug in their beds; little did they know tomorrow they’d rather be dead. At five in the morning the seniors did come; to take them away and make them look dumb. They sat on the gym floor in their pj’s of lace; boy did those seniors put them back into their place. At practice the coaches sat with their whips and their chains; while the swimmers swam through all their aches and their pains. On the deck came the yells from the one they called master; no matter what happened he always yelled faster! With his knobby knees and thick little glasses; in the hall they would see him and run to their classes. There was another who appeared on the scene; they called him Steffe and he was real mean. He thought he was mean, so brave and so bold; but in the end they knew he was gold. He huffed and he puffed all through the season; without ever giving any real reason. Standing all smiling at the end of the pool; was a new coach Shelly to add to this dual. Up at five to swim in the morning, everyday of the week sure became boring. The swimmers were split into six different styles; where together they swam so many more miles. Soon came Conference relays to start it all out; Park Center showed the others what swimming was about. Then came Robbinsdale, Fridley and Cooper; they pulled together and swam really super. But it wasn’t enough to defeat that team; at Regions they would try some other scheme. They swam Lindbergh, state champs was their name; but P.C. girls weren’t there to play games. They swam to the end and gave it their best; it wasn’t enough, they’d have to win all the rest. Then it was Eisenhower, Coon Rapids and Tech; they were the team that had to be beat yet. It was close to the finish as each race was swum; while watching the score it turned out Tech had won. But they held their heads high and looked straight ahead; practice tommorrow is what Dovel said. Then came Osseo, an easy defeat; Armstrong and Wayzata, now Regions was the meet. Everyone was all nervous and psyched for the gold; “keep your eyes on the prize’’ was all Dovel told. The day finally came and spirits were high; the girls were all ready to take Region nine. First came the medley with the youngest of the team; from sixth to third they put points on the screen. They all swam fast and gave it their best; hoping for a medal to wear on their chest. The divers they dove with grace and with style; placing high they held Park Center up for awhile. The depth was not there to win the whole meet; in the end they took third, but not a defeat. But in the game what they learned as it ended; is that broken dreams can always be mended. “One of the most rewarding seasons I ever spent in the pool.’’ Coach Gary Dovel Front Row: Coach Gary Dovel, Karen Busse. A young team with little experience seemed to be a dominating factor of victory for the pirate gymnasts. Younger teammates included sophomores Sandy Madsen, Toni Hill, Lisa Lubrecht, and freshman Molly McGonlgal from North View Junior High. Injuries played a major part in this season’s outcome. Senior Deb Malewicki was temporarily detained with a broken foot and sophomore Dee O’Hair dislocated her elbow and was out for the entire season. Despite the setbacks, the gymnasts pulled together to construct a season for all to be proud of. 6 Now What do I do? Look Ma Hovd. No Hands! Bob Helland, Jeff Fisher, Kevin McGowan. The hockey team had a very prosperous season this winter. Lead by captains Jim Thiebault and Kevin McGowan, they started out very strong and amassed one of the best overall records ever turned in by a Park Center hockey team. The greatest asset of this year’s team was its ability to score goals. Our scoring punch consisted of three balanced lines. Under the skilled guidence of head coach Roger Stelljes and assistants Ron Gordon and Ed Saxton, the Pirates turned in an exciting and enjoyable brand of hockey! 98 99 BOYS SWIMMING Row 1: Marcus Yarns. Dan Steffc. coach. The Pirate Swimmers of 1979-80 distinguished themselves as a spoiler in the Lake North Division. This group of swimmers set some goals that were tough. The work level increased and the swimmers set out to reach their dreams and goals. At the time of this writing, we were still on our journey toward those goals. The most distinguishing trait of this team was their “never give up” attitude and their willingness to pay the price to reach their goals. They were a great bunch of guys of whom 1 was very proud. Coach Dovel WRESTLING The Park Center Wrestling team got off to a fast start by winning the first six meets. They then ran into trouble against Fridley and Wayzata; two annual conference powers. Voted all conference this year was Rex Rabine. State meet hopefuls included, Rex Rabine at 112, Mark Williams at 126, Todd Ofsthun at 132, Roger Forystek at 138, Randy Thysse at 185, and Kory Neisen at HWT. In the playoff championship game, the One Hitters and Keggers, each with 6-0 records, squared off against each other. Keggers used their superior speed and strength to break up what was a close game in the first half and win 32-13. Steve Bare of the Keggers was chosen MVP for his aggresive and dominating play. 104 BOYS IM SOCCER JUNIORS TAKE FIRST Big Dick’s Cafe became only the second Junior team to win the Intramural Soccer Championship when they defeated the Keggers 4-2. Big Dick’s jumped off to quick 3-0 first-half lead in goals by Glen Thorson, Jeff Orthun, and Kevin Berry. In the second half the Keggers put on a furious rally to narrow the gap to 3-2 on two goals by Mike Connoy. With only fourteen seconds remaining Bob Helland, the league’s leading scorer, scored an open net goal to preserve the victory for Big Dick’s. Seventeen teams and over 200 people participated in soccer. FRONT ROW: Byron Saarl. Bob Helland. Jeff “Bull” Orlhun. den Mex Thorson. Jeff Parlow. BACK ROW: John Dubois. Mark Book. Kevin Berry. Tammie Paulson and Marta Polis scored first period goals for the players. However, the High Hopes rallied to tie the game in the second half and force the game into over-time. With only five seconds remaining in overtime Anita Magnuson scored to give the Prime Time Players their second consecutive championship. 105 FRONT ROW: Vicki Fetgum. Marta Polis. Jana Hatzenbeller. Namely, Twinkies and chocolate chip cookies in the Ala Carte line. The U.S. government decided there was too much junk food in the schools so they took out Hostess and left in the Doritos. And to top it all off, they took the sugar off the donuts and left the sugar cookies. There was the usual change in the detention policy, this time the guilty student received one hour of rot time for every hour skipped. Of course, there were a few surprises, like smoke bombs, exploding drinking fountains, and the so-called emergency lights that went up in the “airhead”, and “space cadet” were some of the sayings floating around, along with some ugly rumours about the yearbooks coming out in Julyf?). We were bombed with new movies like “1941”, “The Jerk”, and “Kramer vs. Kramer”, among hundreds of others. On the msuic scene, no one could decide if disco (no comment-this is a family book) was on its way in or out. Punk rock was gone and the New Wave was here to stay. Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Cheap Trick, Pink Floyd and just about everyone else came out with a new album, and it seemed as if they were all good. The die hard domed stadium finally got started, just in time to see the Vikings have their worst season in years. Around the country and the world, the Shah was deposed, the Ayatollah reposed, the hostages were enclosed, and many people wished they would dispose of the draft registration. Gas rose to at least $1.20 a gallon, but people still kept on driving. The Russians invaded Afghanistan and the world invaded Lake Placid (if they could catch a bus from the parking lot). Although it wasn’t always that great, Park Center will probably be remembered as the home of some of the best times of our lives. The future for the Class of 80, and others to follow, will not be easy. The words inflation and depression are being tossed around as casually as the Gopher’s scores and the weather forecast. To quote the famous television personality Mr. Bill “Oh Nooooo”.
