Don 9t you see? Can't you know? You 're the youth among my ruins You're the force that helps me grow. You Ve been my friend for years, and I just wanted you to know I will cry, as you go ... For the last time. The graduate receives his diploma, his covenant and receipt of years of growth — You come near me with a radiant smile, And though I return it, inside, I'm crying. I'm crying in the despair of the loss of your company. But more than that, Tm crying in the happiness that I have had the privilege to know you. And though I want to embrace you in tears, I will just shake your hand. And though I want to beg you not to leave, and the emptiness already floods my heart, I will simply smile, Wish you luck and love, And tell you good-bye, For the last time. 6

We've been together many years, We’ve seen some happy days But still the silent haze Creeps sullenly across my eyes And dwells upon my mind. For soon, I know, our time to part Will come, and then I'll find that you're gone, Moving on. And I know 111 never see you And well never be as near For when you walk away to better things, You’ll walk away, fear. For the last time. The tears well in my eyes, but I fight them back For I'm too old to cry. or so they say . .. But the memories, they grow in my mind. I see you swimming in the lake, those picnics we used to have. The movies, the dances. The midnight walks, the talks that helped us grow. The love we had for others, and for each other.

Memories------ are so beautiful, and yet, What's too painful to remember. We simply choose to forget. So it's the laughter we will remember. Whenever we remember The way we were. The way we were is but a dream now, happy thought upon my heart. And though we'll always be apart We will fight the things that bind us As we struggle toward our dreams Leaving childhood friends behind us, Reaching out for better things Are they there? or anywhere? I watch your fateful final fling of carelessness and high school dreams and mortar boards and youth-hood • in the air, And I'm aware It's for the last time. By John R. Baldwin
