And you're growing strong my friend With a face that's full of light and life But stained with many tears And a childhood full of strain and strife All dulled by many years. All the fears are gone As you travel slowly Into life. 1 watch you walk down the aisle Hear you talk See your style And I'm hoping all the while that you'll stay. But tomorrow's almost here And as I grope to keep you near. You fight my hopes, fulfill my fears, And drift away. The crisp green grass lays silently in the warm spring evening And the youth, in the prime of their life. Walk the strip of lawn to the podium. The change is made by the exchange of hands of a simple scroll of paper. And they look back on their youth For the last time . . . We've been together many years, We’ve seen some happy days But still the silent haze Creeps sullenly across my eyes And dwells upon my mind. For soon, I know, our time to part Will come, and then I'll find that you're gone, Moving on. And I know 111 never see you And well never be as near For when you walk away to better things, You’ll walk away, fear. For the last time. The tears well in my eyes, but I fight them back For I'm too old to cry. or so they say . .. But the memories, they grow in my mind. I see you swimming in the lake, those picnics we used to have. The movies, the dances. The midnight walks, the talks that helped us grow. The love we had for others, and for each other. Don 9t you see? Can't you know? You 're the youth among my ruins You're the force that helps me grow. You Ve been my friend for years, and I just wanted you to know I will cry, as you go ... For the last time. The graduate receives his diploma, his covenant and receipt of years of growth — You come near me with a radiant smile, And though I return it, inside, I'm crying. I'm crying in the despair of the loss of your company. But more than that, Tm crying in the happiness that I have had the privilege to know you. And though I want to embrace you in tears, I will just shake your hand. And though I want to beg you not to leave, and the emptiness already floods my heart, I will simply smile, Wish you luck and love, And tell you good-bye, For the last time. 6 Memories------ are so beautiful, and yet, What's too painful to remember. We simply choose to forget. So it's the laughter we will remember. Whenever we remember The way we were. The way we were is but a dream now, happy thought upon my heart. And though we'll always be apart We will fight the things that bind us As we struggle toward our dreams Leaving childhood friends behind us, Reaching out for better things Are they there? or anywhere? I watch your fateful final fling of carelessness and high school dreams and mortar boards and youth-hood • in the air, And I'm aware It's for the last time. By John R. The musical which was set in Austria, during the rise of the Nazi Empire, demanded many hours of hard work for both cast, orchcrtra, and crews. Along with the cast were Varsity Concert Choir girls who made up the nun’s chorus. The show came alive with Rachel Cedcrbcrg, John Rorem, and the seven von Trapp children ranging from 5 to 12 grade. Along with the hard work came the usual pranks and bad jokes, for example, “Two Little Goats got Hit by a Tow Truck” was a favorite sung to the “Goatherd Song.” Set Director Mike Hoover and Costume Directors Mrs. Winn and Mrs. Stewart put their complete effort into the play and came out with beautiful results. The main credit goes to the Directors, Mr. Anthony, Mr. Nordberg, Stud. Director Kathy Johnson, and Orchestra Director Mr. Hamilton. With a full house almost every night of the six performances, Sound of Music was a big success. Its cast of characters consisted of an old faithful servant, Luka, a young beautiful and slightly dizzy widow, Helena Ivanovna Popov, and, of course, the ultimate boor, Gregori Stepanovich Smirnov. The cast put in a lot of work in preparation for competition. The Boor was successfully performed for the public on January 30. Mr. Christensen put a lot of time and effort into making the play as high caliber as possible. The Boor proved to be an overall success. 37 Childrens’ Theater SITTING: Traci Campbell. Laura Dahlin. As many as three thousand students of elementary schools watched the hour long production. Six elementary schools were visited, five in our district and one outside of the district. There were twelve students involved in the production this year. Since there were only six parts to the play, Mr. Hermann, the advisor, decided to have two casts. This year the cast had to handle the set and costume design as well as memorizing lines. There were no crews to do the work for them. We’ve learned through song and dance and tricks That work and play can sometimes mix. Our Dad is glad; our end is happy! We’ll pack up now and make it snappy! 39 Organized? FRONT ROW: Kathy Johnson. The speeches in the spring of 1978 got the class off to a good start. In the fall of the year, the class started their first project. Putting up the calendar on the library wall was the first order of business. Then came the meetings with Burger King on vandalism, and the C.E.A.P. drive. O.S.A. experienced a few problems during the year. They were upset by an article that appeared in the Buccaneer and the film that was ordered for the movie had some problems. It turned out to be a good year even though the class itself was smaller than it has been in past years. There was another change in the detention policy that was brought about by O.S.A. All these and more were the doings of O.S.A. 52 FRONT ROW: Darcy Hitesman, Secretary Scott Johnson. President Jodi Martin. Treasurer Chcrie Wirth, Rich Newhouse. BACK ROW: Brenda Lien. Martin Munson. The cabinet began this year with the election of the class officers, and then started to plan Homecoming ’78. The days of preparation were hectic and hurried, but the outcome was a success. Other activities include the annual Senior Banquet and a booth at the Sno-Daze carnival. Throughout the year the cabinet was great fun, and somehow we managed to get everything done and on time ... but we couldn’t have done it without our super advisor. Thanks, Mrs. Rogge! This year the Junior class got off to a good start with a new advisor, Ms. Deke. They sponsored a dance and a rocking chair marathon, and the proceeds were contributed toward their main goal______to plan a very successful Prom. All three divisions: varsity, junior varsity, and novice won a trophy in the Metro League. The novice division heads the list with a first place trophy. Debate has provided many challenges to the students involved including, membership in the National Forensic League, a national debate society, and hours of research in the library. Logical and critical thinking are important skills developed by the debaters. These skills help debaters in college and later life. 1978-79 Debate Topic Resolved that the Federal Government should establish a comprehensive program to significantly increase the energy independence of the United States. 58 ELECTRONICS CLUB The Park Center Electronics Club was founded in 1978, to provide an educational opportunity for students with a genuine interest in electronics. One of these goals was sending a team to the state meet. This, of course, was attained, and the slogan to go along with it was “TO STATE IN ’78 . The Pirates finished their conference season 7-1. “We lost by six points to a team who placed third in the state meet so we really don't feel that bad”, commented John Bcrgdahl, the team’s most valuable runner. In the Regional meet, the team finished second. Captain Dean Erickson was fifth, John Bcrgdahl was seventh, and Kurt Holmgren was a close eighth. This year’s season for the girls’ cross-country team was a building one. With only four returning runners from last year, the team consisted of mostly sophomores. Although the girls had a slow start, individual improvement was the key success story of the year with every runner improving her time throughout the season. The Most Improved Runner was Mary Kay Sexton, who in the two mile race reduced her time by an outstanding 3 minutes and 45 seconds. Co-Captain Kathy Johnson was voted the Most Valuable Runner. “It’s fun and I really get a feeling of accomplishment,” stated Co-Captain Korky Heinen. Coach Dave Baur commented, “We will miss the graduating seniors, but with the team consisting mostly of sophomores, we will have a strong nuceus next year.” The 1979 runners, who will be led by Co-Captains Doreen Johnson and Joan Klukken, are looking forward to next season. 86 87 s Paul Domaas. The 1978 Park Center football team had an outstanding comeback, winning their last five games after losing three of their first four. It took a courageous team to come back fighting instead of laying down and dying. To the crowd and student body’s surprise, the Pirates beat the 1978 class A A runner-ups, Fridley, in Park Center’s Homecoming game. This year’s defense carried on the tradition, bringing in several extremely good performances. Although the offense didn’t have the consistency of Park Center’s great teams, it had tne ability to break some big scores, like the first play from scrimmage against Osseo. Jack Knutson broke through precise blocking for a sixty yard touchdown run. Within a league as difficult and demanding as the Lake Conference, it is necessary for a team and program to grow constantly in new ideas and approaches. Park Center upheld most of the tradition established by great players before them, but they also added new dimensions of pride and performance which will be the building blocks of the future. “Coaching is the greatest high school job in the State of Minnesota. Chip Upham, a 22 year old student at the U of M, coached the team and introduced such words as “forte”, “foible and “parrie into the students’ vocabulary. Classes were held on Monday nights beginning on September 11 and continuing through December 4. The training began with exercises in simple lunges and retreats, progressing into compound attacks, circle parries, and tining concepts. Some members of the class competed in the meets held at suburban high schools and community Ungowa! colleges. The meets were long, tiring and at times extremely painful, but a lot was learned from them. With many of the participants being seniors, they hope to continue fencing at North Hennepin and the U of M. The IM fencing team hopes that this will be the beginning of a P.C. tradition. Included in this group were: captain Todd Bradley, Dave Toll, Don Long, Dave Sonderby, Craig Mauis, Mike Swanson. Capable juniors that saw varsity action were Bruce Schaffce, and two players who won themselves starting spots by the end of the season namely: DaleSandahl, and Mike Dubois. The Pirates leading scorer, leading field goal percentage shooter, and the leading rcbounder in the Lake North was Dave Toll. Dave was honored accordingly by being selected to the All Conference team by the Lake North coaches. Although the Pirates flirted with victory often, few W’s were chalked up on our side of the score board. The progress the team made was illustrated by comparing scores of our season opener VS Wayzata (50-BO) to our final regular season game where the score against these same Trojans was (56-57) in a heartbreaking loss. Frustration keynoted many of our efforts, but as true Pirates we came to play game after game and did our best. in VARSITY. FRONT ROW: Sarah Hutcheson. Nancy Duwenhogger. Laura Thcis. The 1978-79 girls’ gymnastics team showed that a positive attitude, hard work and dedication all pay off. After winning their first three meets the gymnasts were defeated by Ossco. This meet was followed by a season high of 118.75 over the Copper Hawks’ 114.10. Going against Robinsdale, the north division leader, the Pirates made an excellent showing, but were narrowly defeated with a score of 117.82 to 117.44. The team was lead by captains Sue Flaa and Dawn DesJardins, both making strong contributions on varsity floor and beam. Senior Karen Lane proved strong again this year on unevens ad vaulting after two previous appearances in the state meet. Clodctta Carlone, also a senior, added depth to the vaulting team with scores consistently in the sevens. Junior competitors include Mary Hallbcrg varsity vaulting, Julie Eakins varsity beam, Betsy McGonigal varsity floor. Deb Malcwicki and a much improved Anita Magnuson on varsity bars. Kate DePaolis and Laurie Hopf placed consistenly as all around performers. The sophomore gymnasts have showed great potential for their years to come. Teresa LaRock as a sophomore proved to be the teams highest scorer with an all around total consistently in the 31 to 32 range. 116 •i FRONT ROW: Jim Norby, Tim Czcck, Paul Stewart, Mark Shelley, Danny Thompson. PIRATE HOCKEY 118 Captains Danny Thompson and Tom Czcck led this year’s Pirate hockey team to its most successful season since entering the Lake Conference three years ago. Experience, hard work, and hustle proved to be the strong points as the Pirates doubled their win total from last year. This season’s highlights included victories over Cooper and Os-sco. The Pirates beat an excellent Cooper team 3-2, and with the help of a shut out by goalie Mark Shelley, beat Osseo 4-0. With the help of the returning lettermen and a strong junior varsity squad, the Pirates hope to improve their record even more next year. The Pirates arc coached by Roger Stelljcs and Ron Gordon. Come To An End The year started out with its usual pepfcst. Hey Wendy, how did that pie taste? Homecoming was quick to come with an exciting win over the State runner-up in football. But this was only the beginning of the excitement. Boys gymnastics took first in State! The excitement mounted when “Superman” soared onto the screen along with “Grease , “Up in Smoke , “Animal House and “Halloween . But then came the traumatic death of Rockefeller and the people of Jonestown. Woody Hayes got the boot, while the dome stadium got doomed or did the doomed stadium get domed? The Dallas cheerleaders were not the only ones with problems. The Catholics have had an increase in demand for Popes and a decrease in demand for polish jokes. Due to missing and bent forks, students were almost forced to cat with plastic forks. The students choice was a misnomer. To top that off the smoking area was almost closed. We were all thankful that this was “The Last of the 70’s.” 236 CHOOSE YOUR “GREASED” LIGHTNING 1972 Chevrolet Rally Nova owned by Alan Pole.
