They are the memories of friends and experiences, the casual conversations with classmates. The activities of today become tomorrow’s memorable treasures. Park Center’s musical production of OKLAHOMA was presented on November 12, 13, 18, 19, 20. Cast and all involved put in many hours of hard work during the nine weeks of rehearsel. Standing ovations became a part of the routine as the play progressed from one performance to the next. The most complicated set in Park Center history was constructed under the supervision of Mr. Michael Hoover. The set featured two rotating wood platforms which were worked on day and night right up until opening night. A small portion of the cast were new to the experience of putting on make-up and this was responsible for enumerable good times ... Pass the cake ... Green eye shadow for the guys? ... Mustaches, sideburns, and the old man’s beard. Ah yes the sacrifices of the theatre. Mr. Edward Anthony and Mr. Terry Nordberg were co-directors for this years play. Assisting the dynamic duo was student director Kim Garrison. This was the first year that Park Center hired a professional choregrapher to work with the cast. Mrs. Karen Saxvik was assisted by Patti Jensen in choreographing the dance scenes, such as; Kansas City, Many a New Day, and the Farmers Dance. Overall, a great experience was had by all involved. The battle between the sexes begins. The guy’s perform “It’s a Scandal! It’s a Outrage!” With me it’s all or nothing ... All for you and nothing for me. On a grading range similar to our scholastic system, the performance received three A’s and one B-. Superbly directed by Mr. Earle Christenson with the assistance of student director Jane Clark, the play was a great success. 25 Not until you say please, big boy Be careful father I have warts 3-Act Play You Can’t Take It With You Moss Hart CAST OF CHARACTERS Penelope Sycamore Essie ........... We haven't forgotten anything. the ice. that I was going to stay here for eight years? I feci very uncomfortable about this.” The 1976-77, 3-act play, You Can’t Take It With You. is an old favorite of many and is very suitable for high school production. The basic plot consists of a family, whose outlook on life is simply - do as you like. With this basic philosophy the family succeeds in de-stuffing” a rich, sophisticated businessman and helping him to realize the fact that, “You can’t take it with you. The combination of amusing antics and dialogue enables both the message and comedy of the play to reach the audience, making it an enjoyable experience for all. Surprisingly this year's 3-act cast has. for the most part, never been on stage before. This has provided for some interesting moments, some problems, and new experiences for all involved. One incident, which could be placed in the new experience category, is when the girls entered the boys’ dressing room by mistake and to their shock, found the room empty. Another situation that arose was when John Vandcr-heyden. Student Director, had to fill in for the part of Penny, a scatterbrained mother, his performance was convincing. Seriously, the young cast had some memorization and characterization problems, but through work improved upon their own acting styles. Overall this ear's 3-act play cast has had a good time creating a funny show. “I only meant, Anthony, that lust is. after all, a human emotion.1 27 I really don’t mind at all.” When I start seeing snakes, it’s time to lay down. The club this year has accomplished many things some of which include their efforts to keep Park Center’s lunch open. OSA also donated 100 dollars towards KPCI to get Park Center’s radio station under way. Other activities include Mini-Courses, Student Government Day, and many more. Any profits earned go towards buying things for the school and students. It is said that OSA would benefit anyone because one learns organization, parlimentary procedure and most of all responsibility and leadership. 42 Open lunch - or not? That is the question! The Buccaneer added a new literary’ art section in which student drawings are shown and wrote about. Two of the editors, Chuck Rodin and Denise Nord went on internship with professional writers of the Twin Cities. In the Porthole's second year, it added an Athlete of the Week Award in which the outstanding male or female athlete is selected each week. The only downfall to this year’s staff was the small office they had to work in, even though it had no effect on the 10 issues they put out. 44 With twenty-three people working on the yearbook staff times were never dull. An increased amount of books were sold, 1200. There was a lot of work to be done and the staff really felt the pressure near the deadline days. After the deadlines the staff often celebrated with twinkies, pop, and card playing. ROW 1: Chuck Nelson. Laurel Kaliszewski. Chuck Schmidt, Sheri Thibodeau. Lori Strong, Jean Williams. DANCELINE! Practicing starts in June, nine hours a week, all in the hopes of making 23 girls perform as one. Only the girls on the line know exactly what goes into one performance. Hours of practicing the same thing over and over again until it’s perfected. At times we think “why am I doing this? Why am I putting myself through this torture?” but just going out there and performing once makes it all worthwhile. Dancing at the Kicks, school sports, Homecoming, Snow Days, our first (annual?) danceline clinic, and the St. Paul Winter Carnival (placing fifth out of thirty-seven schools) made the year very exciting. It was a year of parties, hard work, fun, excitement, and new and lasting friendships. I he memories will last forever. Lynn-o- 55 Park Center Debate Club K TOP ROW: Miss Krause. This activity provides many challenges. An exciting part of the debate program is the incentive to become a member of debate’s national honor society, known as the National Forensic League. This society continues to honor debaters for their achievements in successive debates. The skills developed as a debater are his abilities of self expression, logical and critical thinking and persuasive techniques. Debaters are recognized for their leadership qualities and service to their school. 56 The Speech Club consists of 25 students, headed by english teacher Mr. Christenson. All together they have sixteen people in the club. They have fund-raisers such as coat checks at plays and dances. HEART spends most of their money on trips to “Leadership Conferences,” where they meet new and different people. They enter competitions related to economics, like child care, food, fashions, etc. The biggest event of the year is the “Spring Competition.” It includes cake decorating, fashions, and modeling. They are more or less on their own. They have visited Betty Crocker and have had a speaker come in from time to time. I.M. Boxing Park Center’s first year of I.M. Boxing was fairly successful as 15 boys competed. Without an official tournament, the competition devoted most of its time to teaching techniques and having fun. Some of the brighter spots were Miles Galloway in the heavyweight division along with Steve Sires and Dale Boulais. Coach Solomonson said there will be an official tournament in next year’s competition. X-country Skiing X-country skiing was not as successful as the other I.M. sports because of weather conditions. Four trips were cancelled due to poor snow conditions. There were 35 people participating in the 2 trips -one to Bunker Hill, the other to Theodore Wirth Park. 84 I.M. But rewarding in the pleasurable experiences through work with individual players. I’m optimistic about next year.” -Brad Olson The Pirates had a nasty welcoming to the Lake Conference. Though not having a winning record the Pirates retained the hustle and enthusiasm from years past. The Pirates were led by 6’6” center Randy Moberg who gained all-conference honors. The Pirates rebounding strength came from junior forward Joe “Harvey” Hartung. Dave Johnston set up and ran the offense and was the outside scoring threat. One of the highlights of the season was beating Osseo 41-40. 90 B S q u a d ROW 1 (L. TO R) Coach Cindy Drcalan, Gail Curtis, Dorric Tuma, Darcy Peterson. ROW 2: Nancy Olson. The Lake Conference is considered by many to be one of the toughest high school hockey conferences in the nation. The hockey team was lead by captains Craig Larsen and Rich Czech. The big highlight of the season was a victory over arch-rival Osseo 3-1. 1ST ROW: Don Nelson, Paul Anderson, John Sorbo, Chris Serakos, Tim Nelson, Kent Wagner. 2ND ROW: Mark Gilbert, Tony Bonin, Kyle Engstrom, John Hennessy, Curt Wyfels, Dan Thompson, Todd Johnson, Coach Bran-strom. 95 This year was a year of rebuilding for P.C. girls gymnastics team. Two new coaches headed the young team of dedicated girls through many hard practices. Although the team didn't win as many meets as they would have liked, much improvement was shown by all. The team worked on building strength and endurance. Practices were held until at least 5:30 every night with some going until 7:00. Many new friends were made, and hopefully friendship that will be lasting. VARSITY GIRLS GYMNASTICS: FRONT ROW: L. TO R: Tammy Worth. Uura Stanley, Jane L’AUier, Darlene Polk, BACK ROW: L. This year’s swim team has carried on the winning tradition once again. A young enthusiastic team, whose hard work and dedication has led to many pleasant surprises. Their first season in the Lake Conference brought many wins and a great learning experience for all those involved. Early season hi-lights included wins over long-established schools such as Edina-East and Wayzata. Pirate swimmers went all out after perennial state champion Hopkins-Eisenhower and came up only 1 point short of victory. To put it all together, one pirate swimmer summed up the season by simply saying “super”. 99 Qtq 3 w r e s t I i A-TEAM ROW 1 L. TO R (98) Doug Arndt, (105) Bruce Larson.
