The victory put the Pirates on top of the Skyline Conference standings. PC scored first with 1:26 to go in the first quarter, when quarterback Terry Westermann (12) threw a 66 yard pass to tight end Tim Laudner (12). Despite the Pirates tough defense, Cambridge came back, and tied the game on a two yard plunge into the endzone. The extra point attempt was good and the Bluejackets then led 7 to 6 at halftime. Senior Attendants Tammy Rau and Dave Fabrcllo. Sophomores Wanda Amslerand John Vanderheyden. Juniors Tom Rodgers and Rene Rehaume. M.C.'s Mark Braun and Cynde Bottleson. Guardian Angels. The Pirates came on strong in the second half gaining 74 yards in their first drive. They regained the lead when Steve Stock (12) scored to cap that drive. Gregg Feigum's (12) conversion point was good and the Pirates were ahead 14 to 7. Stock's touchdown proved to be the winning one but that didn't stop the Pirates from scoring again when Wes-termann added 6 points after crossing the Cambridge one yard line. Charlie Head (12) decided to get into the action by recovering a Bluejacket fumble on the Pirates' 30 yard line in the fourth quarter. Again the mighty PC offensive unit went all the way to score on a 4 yard dash to the goal line by Tony johnson (12). The Pirate defense didn't let Cambridge score again and the Pirates carried on their tradition of Homecoming victories. 1974 King and Queen, Bob Faust and Sue Bublitz. 25 The Dance • • • The Reception followed a heavenly evening highlighted by the crowning of our King and Queen. King Arthur played by Mark Braun. Lancelot played by Timm Rolek. . The story of Camelot is set in the sixth century during the time of KingArthur and his round table. Arthur, reluctant at first, marries Guenevere to bring a treaty upon warring countries. Shortly afterward Arthur conceives the idea of creating a Round Table and inviting all knights to pursue peace. Lancelot, a knight from France, hears the call to all knights and joins the Table only to find himself in love with Queen Guenevere. The roof finally caves in when Mordred, Arthur's illegitimate son, exposes the internal treason in the kingdom and destroys the precious Table of King Arthur, pushing him into an unwanted war. Camelot was one of the best musicals ever done at Park Center , says Mr. Anthony, Director, and rightly so. Cast, crews, and orchestra worked long and hard since the middle of September to create an exciting musical experience. A new addition to the Directors this year was Mr. Nordberg who helped with staging and music. Sets were designed by Mr. Michael Hoover while costumes were designed by Mrs. Terry Winn. It was a pleasure to work with such a fine group, said Mr. Nordberg. It is a lot of work, but it all pays off in the end, remarked senior Brian Mulder Lancelot looks into the eyes of Guenevere after bringing the fallen knight back to life. 32 Arthur dreams of the Round Table idea. VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) is set up in high schools all over the United States primarily to help students get involved in activities so they can develop leadership abilities and just plain have fun. Park Center's director for VICA describes VICA as being the third largest organization in the United States today. He also explained that its size has grown largely in its ten year existence. VICA believes in preparing each student for the World of Work and jobs acquired by VICA for the students range from Nurse's Aides and Interior Decorators, to an auto mechanic or a child developer. VICA is a beginning for each and every student, not just for the short period in his or her life in which he is involved in it, but VICA is a forever experience. 57 DECA PIRATES mmmm DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) is working in the school store. It's getting practical experiences with on-the-job training. There are fall rallies at the Vocational Education camp. And leadership conferences for district, state, and the nation. Being a small club doesn't hinder their purposes and efficiency. Many people don't realize they operate in two areas of the school, Photography, Video taping. They act as a service unit for the building . Mr. Buck It's unique also in the way that it's not run like a regular club, there's no president or officers. The club's main goals are to meet and share experiences with people and to develop skills. They meet every two months on the second and fourth Tuesdays. On the first and third they get the use of the darkroom. 59 Debate Row 1(1 to R): Steve Vilks, Julie Kaupp, Pam Kane, Carolee Felber, Nancy Schultz. French Club is an organization which gives students a chance to learn more about the French language and culture while getting together with kids that are doing the same thing. Although set back by a few minor difficulties such as lack of members (one would never guess by the number that found their way into the picture) the French Club did accomplish a few daring feats. With determination they planned their Sno-Daze Cake Walk while visions of the last year's $2 profit danced in the back of their minds. With money raised by previous members an Amity Aide was hired to help students with their French. Claudia Charpentir arrived soon after school started and stayed for nine weeks. Students learned about the Metro , what you say to the doctor and other such interesting little tidbits. They could learn the correct pronunciation of the words as well as having a fun time doing it. As President Penny Stokes put it, In French Club, we plan activities that will help our French outside the classroom. After three or four years of a language you are really serious about it and welcome any opportunities to become more involved with it. Favorite Pasttime of the French Club. Usherettes began on October 28, 1975. The interested girls stayed after school to discuss the prospects and get an idea for interest, also to figure out where the group would be headed. The girls were to usher at the musical Camelot , on November 11,13,14, and 15. Six different girls signed up for the musical. The girls' main concern is to help in school happenings and escort people around the school, but most important, is to be Miss Courteous , to let people know that we do want to help whenever help may be needed. The girls are hoping to get a school questionaire and file together which would profit the entire school body. They will be assisting in the 1 and 3 Act plays and possibly the Childrens Theatre. 66 'Ski Club does tricks in '76. Advisor Jim Thomson- 67 H.E.A.R.T. During the first trimester OSA concerned itself with the drafting of a constitution. Since then, OSA has lobbied for a bill at the state capital, sponsored a C.E.A.P. drive, a Muscular Dystrophy drive, and has moved into trying out the constitution at the classroom level. AFS An internationally focused organization, this year's AFS Club hopes to enable at least two foreign exchange students to come to Park Center in the next few years. Eight of ten players were All-Conference. Ann DePaolis and Paula Adams captained the team through finals against Washburn. A 6-0 conference record gave Park Center its last Skyline Championship Title. The last title was only the beginning of a different style of football under an all new coaching staff. Head Coach Earl Sol-omonson found his assistance in defensive coach Tim Herman, offensive coach Don Siverson, and B-squad coaches Chuck Achter and Fast Eddie Saxton. The team had a tough schedule, consecutively facing three highly rated teams. Captains Mike Sutton and Terry Wester-mann lead the team to demolish Cambridge 28-7 at our Homecoming. They went on flattening rival Osseo 27-0, a royal victory since it was their Homecoming. Lastly they overwhelmed Fridley 42-22, a team we really wanted to beat. A berth in the State Playoffs seemed close, but a loss to Armstrong ended the dream. Offensively, with a new style of play, a new look, the Pirates had their moments of greatness. Defensively, the Pirates lead the Conference by only giving up fifty-one points. The new unies promised for the girls' team turned out to be for the guys too, and from a distance, one could not be exactly sure which the runner was. Coach Mottaz called the two teams a family and in a way they really were. Together they warmed up each day, rode the same buses, ran in the same meets, cheered for each other sharing victories and good races, razzed each other and hated each other, like brother and sister. No two teams, male and female, had worked together at Park Center, for one sport, like was done for Cross Country. For three years the veterans had set a goal to go to the state meet. Never before had there been such a great chance and it was probably the best team P.C. would see for a long time. A superb team dominated by senior leadership, was the way Rick Oprenchak put it. The Pirates finished the year with only one defeat in conference dual meets. The loss to Fridley was the first dual meet loss ever. Fridley went on to out run the Pirates once more, and by nine points took away not only second place in Regions, but also the jog to the state meet. two members, Creg Green and Mike Zelinski, were named all-conference. In summing up the season, captain Mike Zelinski said, We may not have gone to state or even won the conference but in my eyes the 1975 Pirate team proved that they were champions in their own rite. The girls season was highly successful. The Skyline Champion Dovel's Darlings ran undefeated in dual meet competition, won the Park Center Invitational, came in third in the Matterhorn Invitational, and eighth in the highly rated Princeton Invitational. Their goal, to win the Conference, was fulfilled, with five members, Anita Anderson, Carol Bradbury, Korky Heinen, Patty Letters, and Jean Vanderheyden being named All-Conference. The team went on to hold a close fourth at the toughest region meet in the state. The guys collected victories at the Park Center and Bemidji Invitational and had an impressive showing at the Princeton Invitational. The team took second to Osseo at the Conference Meet, although The team was small, but tri-captains Anita Anderson, Jill Anderson, and Barb Hccr headed up the girls who would give enough, who cared enough, who wanted to win enough. One could say they ran where no girls had run before. GiHs Basketball Row 1 (L to R): Kris Cahlander, Sue Gregor, Maureen Delaney. Their first region game ended in a victory over Fridley Grace with the score of 54-51. Although they were defeated in their second region game, they still kept their Pirate spirit. Coach Thompson- The best team I've ever coached. If you judge a gymnastics season by wins and losses, we would have to say Our season was Great! The team has been undefeated in dual meets for two straight years. They again won the Skyline Conference Championship, for the last time before they change to the Lake Conference. The team was runner up in the Princeton Invitational, they took first place in both the White Bear Invitational and the Park Center Invitational. The Pirates began the year with a rating of fifth in the state and as the season progressed moved up in the ratings to third. This success has to be attributed to a well balanced team led by two outstanding ail around gymnasts, Kevin Prady and Mike L'Allier who worked all events. They were backed up by some outstanding individuals like Al Bartos on the still rings and parallel bars, Mike Matteson on parallel bars and horizontal bar, and Myles Galloway on the trampoline and horizontal bar. At the Skyline Conference Meet, Park Center gymnasts took 13 of the 14 All-Conference positions. The All-Conference selections were Mike L'Allier, Kevin Prady, Jim Genadek, Myles Galloway and Al Bartos. % 97 Row 1 (L to R): Mike Jacobsson, Brian Bensley. Wrestling- the only sport that puts an athlete in the spotlight, competing man against man in a contact sport. A wrestler must develop mental strength as well as physical strength. These qualities become necessities in the face of a long season, grueling practices, and weight watching. To become an accomplished wrestler, an athlete must totally commit himself to the sport. With dedication, a wrestler soon de-velopes a sense of team spirit, self discipline, and Pirate pride. This year's pirate team, consisting mostly of underclassmen did a fine job under the leadership of Co-captains Leif Klang and Tim Mueller. 71 Junior Varsity Front (L to R): Scott Gjesvold, Ron Evenson, Bruce Anderson, Mike Hermanspahn. This year's squad was plagued by injuries early in the season but had the character to pull together and win close games by discovering a new hero every week. Three memorable victories included overtime wins over North Branch, Cooper, and Osseo. Haunted by inconsistent performances until the second half of the season our squad got it together in time to finish our regular season with a phe-nominal streak highlighted by being the only team to defeat conference champion, Cambridge. The Pirates had dedicated themselves to proving that by the end of the season they had improved to where they could claim that they were the best team in the conference. Looking at the record, few would dispute our claim as we ended our season in second place. Zehm battles for tip. Pederson and Mobcrg combine for a two on one game. Milestones for this team included basketball's first wins over City and Lake Conference opponents. The versatility of this year's squad was exemplified by multiple defensive and offensive systems. We ran, pressed, finessed, and powered our way into the hearts of loyal Pirate fans. A look at the scores shows there were few dull moments during this season. Our seniors included: Co-Captains Del Alekson and Steve Gagne; supported by point men: Tim Johnston and Scott Palmquist; wings: Steve Pederson, Dan Shelander and Terry Westermann; and post men: Jeff Vetter and Ron Zehm. This year's girls' gymnastics team was an exceptional mixture of experience and youth - a combination that made for one of the most successful years in the history of Park Center. Under the capable leadership of the team captain, Maureen Thielen, opponents which had never been defeated by our squad were vanquished; new and more difficult routines were mastered, and team scores were higher than ever. The experience and dedication of the departing seniors will be sorely missed but the youth, ability and potential of those remaining promise future success. An exclusive privilege the sophomores hold is that of registering last. If you saw even one soph on registration day you can't help but remember that shining, joyful face. Standing: Brian Kald- well, Mike Kack, Jeff Weiss, Ken Klefsaas, Mike Leahy, Brian Holcomb. It was a brutal game with many tem-permants flaring. Down after the first half, the Brewers reorganized and in a dramatic second half were victorious over the Cherrypoppers 38-30. 214 Ping Pong Champ Jim Zwack was the 75 IM Ping Pong Champion. Runner-up was Dave Adams. The Championship Doublesteam was sophomores Leo Hopf and Julius Sund. Dave and Jim Zwack were the runners-up in that division. The Zee-Wackers swept the IM Volleyball Tournament losing only one game during the entire season. The team was led by captain Dave Zwack. His loyal Wackers were Barb Heer, Lynn Host, Patty Junceski, Ken Klefsaas, Tim Mueller, Pat Quigley, Greg Witry, Bill Yarco, Mark Zimmerman, and Jim Zwack. 215 I take my last walk through the halls of PC and recall the memories created there ... the hassles in the office when I wanted to get out of class ... the long waits to see a counselor when I had a problem (sometimes it was gone by the time I had an appointment) ... appealing classes, then having the attendance policy become illegal- no more appeals!... Chemistry, math, home-ec, physics, computors, yearbook office, experiments in science ... screwing around in the lab ... cheating on math tests ... programming the computor to reenact the civil war (and the North losing) ... baking, frying, sewing a new outfit ... dancing in the hall ... getting mad at your locker and not having it fight back! second floor ... english and social ... comp, sophomore required english, electives ... closed off open classrooms ... sitting in the library looking at blank walls ... theOSA calendar ... seniors banned from the library 6th hour ... making out in the stacks ... basic consumer economics, history, political science... third floor ... foreign languages, psychology, english, alternatives, business education ... typing to music ... mini-classes in alternatives ... raising a rat in psych ... teaching him new tricks learning Deutsch, Espanole, ou Francais... 217 218 shop wing ... welding, car care, plastics, wood, drafting, jewelry, lettering, pottery ... students make everything from canoes to cabinets ... girls learn how to look helpless when they get a flat tire ... plans are drawn for an empire ... students let their creativity flow on canvas, on paper, with clay, with metal... the pool ... home of the PC swim teams ... state meet contenders emerged from here, dripping and tired, but happy ... scene of the sophomore gym classes. .. the auditorium ... concerts, plays, bicentennial shows, musicals, class meetings ... Came-lot. The Masque of the Red Death, The Imaginary Invalid ... we had our first class meeting here, and our last ... the cafeteria ... food fights, dances, receptions ... complete with maitre d's (alias Judith Lamp and Dean LaFrenz) ... a table for two ... or ten? the gym ... Athletic Director Mot-taz's Office ... pepfests, concerts, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, gymnastics ... home of the second place gymnastics team in the state ... the weight room with its sweaty bodies ... locker room that don't smell of air freshener ... V-l-C-T-O-R-Y that's the senior battle cry! ... We are the Park Center Pirates, we'll always hold our colors high! 219 Smokers A smoking area was introduced at PC this year. A little late maybe. The girls' cans have had about all they can take. The West side Smokers' Haven provides a place where smokers can enjoy their smoke without bothering others. The area has really helped the situation as once again one can go to the bathroom without an oxygen mask. 220 Buses At 2:05 the buses start arriving to take students home. At 2:15 the race begins. If you have something to do - forget it. Your bus won't wait. Promptly at 2:20 they leave. A big long procession carrying students home??? 221 Locker Line up Obviously it is easier for a senior to get a top choice locker in a high class lockerbank than it is for a sophomore. The reason is simple: Class. A senior with class can take over just about any locker he chooses with a minimum of hassle, one simply tells the sophomore to flake off like good dandruff. It is important to get a good locker. This will be your home away from home for the next 9 months. There are different locker areas; the slums by shop, economy in the science hallways, convenient by the office and gym, or a locker with a view overlooking the library. 222 A locker can be shared with two or more people if you don't like to be alone; of course it can get a little crowded. Empty lockers make good trash cans ... You can take out frustrations on lockers and they don't fight back ... A locker can be a plush bachelor pad or a bill board ... Locker banks provide even more fun! The Parking Game The stakes are high. If you play your cards right, you can win. If not, you may lose your car. The Rules: 1. Obtain a car. 2. Get a parking sticker. 3. Park on your own side of the lot. The Play: Cars start arriving before 7 a.m. and by 7:50 the lot is nearly full. Students must park farther away so that teachers will not have to tire their bodies in the long walk to the school. The Object: To park your car as close to school as possible without getting towed away. 223 Staff Jill Anderson Sara Bloedel Barb Delaney Dave Faust Leslie Fritsche Teri Haeck Sandy Hartung Carolyn Helland Peggy Holst Loreen Johnson Audrey Juskiewicz Kris Kramer Don Krefting Cathy LaCrosse Lynn Lawrence Barb Nelson Renee Pohl Timm Rolek Colleen Roth Renee Schoenrock Roxanne Soligny Gail Waltour CONTRIBUTORS Cheryl Damar Carolee Felber Kevin Hopps Nancy Schultz Chris Schwanz Jim Schwarz COVER Mike L'Allier Bryan Northrop A special thanks to Donna at Dayton's Photography Studio.
